I'm trying help my sister find my brother in-law a decent dual sport bike. He has always rode on my bikes but hasn't ever owned a bigger bike.

I'm not familiar with the dual sport category so I figured I would ask some question first. Before I start showing my sister bikes.

Her budget is around 2000 and no more than 3000. He is about 210 lbs. and in his late 40's

Here are some I found around me in NC.

Dr200se

dr650

ktm450 exc

My vote would be the KTM450 but I'm not sure if I can talk her in to that price range. Would the DR200se be to small? He would be riding down any major highways just back country roads.

Don't get the 200. I would also go KTM, It will be a more nimble bike, but the 650 looks nice as well.

Big dude.

It depends on what he will ride mostly. If he's going to spend a lot of time on the street and taking long rides than a 650 is probably the way to go. If there's going to be a lot of dirt road and dirt bike trails, the 450 KTM is going to be a lot more fun. However, the 450 is going to have a short life with mostly street riding. Especially if there is freeway involved. An XR650R would be the way to go if you can find one. They are highly desirable and probably beyond that budget.

But like Paul I prefer the KTM. Everything about them is better.

If he's going to be in the dirt and single track riding go with the KTM but if this is a forest roads/gravel roads bike get the DR650. I'd also search for a DRZ400. I had one for about 5-6 years and loved it. If he's 200+ that little DR200 will feel like a pit bike.

I found this DRZ that I like better than any of them. BUT it says no title so it's not street legal. Why is that and what's involved in making it street legal.

I have always had two strokes and got you of riding right before 4 strokes took over. Broke my neck and back on a double in collage kinda ended my riding for a while LOL. I've owned sport bikes too but never a dual sport.

My brother is a gun smith and has a shop 2 miles from his house. I imagine that will be the extent of his riding. I could never see him hitting a single track.

Every state is different when it comes to making bikes street legal. Although, I still think you need a title.

That one in Hickory looks decent.

Title just means he doesn't have the pink, or in some circumstances where bikes were came directly from the factory, there may not be a title. If you plan to ride off of private property that could be a problem. If it's just a lost title that's a minor thing.
