That sucks. salt water and racing fuel my favorite.

Salt water?
Old     (azpowerhouse)      Join Date: Jul 2007       04-21-2008, 9:52 PM Reply
Firebird is used boat races as well. I believe it is salty due to a liner that was put to hold the water in, it also holds everything else in. The water evaporates and leaves salt. There is no water exchange with this lake.(from what I have heard) I have also heard other bad things as well.

The best location of the year! It should be 115 and no shade....

this is interesting because in some of the recent mags it has said that its going to be in Abbotsford
British Columbia. I could be wrong and it would cool if it was in Phoenix.

Yep, it's Phoenix. I'm not too pumped on the lake, but I think it will be cool to hit up a new spot. I will be wearing my big hat and 80spf, but it should be good.

Gordie, is it protected? what are the afternoon wind conditions like, last time I was in Phoenix it seemed like the wind picked up quite a bit in the afternoon.

Could be worse. They could hold it in Seattle where average temps hover around 30 degrees anymore .

Yup...

We've had snow at least one day a week for the last three weeks!

Firebird Lake is fed by well water that contains alkaline.

Randy, even when it's blown out it's conditions aren't that bad to ride. There is grand stand seating on the west side of the lake that will provide shade in the afternoon.

Firebird is a trip to ride on. The water is so fast and the wakes are hard. Could be a good stop because That lake has been glass everytime I have seen it. Water taste like crap though. It's alkaline water because its a cement bottom lake so none of the minnerals can get out but the water can. so it leaves the minerals behind. There is all kinds of weird/cool mineral growths on the bottom of that lake. They should do it at the Tempe "river" were the paddle boats are right off mill street. That place was sweet when we rode there. Its super easy for people to get to and right in the middle of town.

Wow, looks like we'll be returning to the spot of the first tournament I ever covered for WakeWorld, the Phoenix Pro Am, where Brannon Johnson and Cheryl Newton took the pro titles and Justin Stephens was in the boat shooting still photography!!

Here is a link to the 2008 Pro Tour Schedule press release.

The problem with Tempe Town is the back wash from the walls around the water.
Old     (solo)      Join Date: Oct 2001       04-22-2008, 9:48 AM Reply
Tempe Town Lake has cement retaining walls and after one or two passes it's a washing machine!

They had a bunch of water breaks when we were there it didn't seem that bad. Firebird is way better as far as the water goes for sure. I was just saying that Tempe Town whould draw a HUGE crowd. I know there were a ton of people there when we were there and it was just college.
