I am a first time inboard owner and noticed something strange my first couple of times out. When driving in a straight line at speeds above 20 miles per hour and I let go of the steering wheel, the boat wants to take a fairly hard right. Coming from an I/O background I never experienced this sensation. Is this something unique to inboards due to the prop and rudder set up. Is this happening due to the prop rotation and wash pushing against the rudder. If this is not normal, is there an adjustment to fix this? On other point of interest, the steering wheel itself is not centered when going straight but offset at about 90 degrees at the 270 degree point. (If that makes sense). I can this be fixed? The boat is a Supra 22V with the Indmar 340hp if that matters.

Most inboards pull right without a hand on the wheel. Wheels are also usually not centered. You can adjust if you like by reindexing the wheel. It only takes a few minutes.

all i/o will turn slightly to the right. it is normal. its because of the prop turning. nautiques turn slightly left though because there props turn in the opposite direction than the rest of the manufacturers

If you want to adjust the pull of the boat, you can shave on the rudder. This is done to three event tournament boats all the time. I wouldn't recommend ever letting go of the wheel on an inboard though.

My Nautique drives straight as an arrow. It has a tunable rudder. I've never adjusted it, but could if it ever started pulling. The only time it will pull to one side is if it's not evenly weighted. My friends Supreme pulled like crazy. It would ware you out by the end of the day. I was always trying to get him to have his rudder professionally tuned. I think the problem is fix-able, it just takes someone who knows what they are doing.

Heath, I believe your boat has an adjustable rudder. Give Paul, Matt or Bret a call at Bakes ask them how to adjust it.

If you don't have \ tuning tab on your rudder, you will need to grind/shave it. Take small amounts off of the trailing(rear) edge of the side you want it to pull towards, left in your case. I tuned my VLXs rudder and it tracks nice & straight now. It's sounds more daunting than it is...........

Tractor is right on with what to do. Charman, the only thing to do is go faster, or just ignore it because it will go the other way every few of seconds

Heath, just talked to Bret. He said your boat has the adjustable rudder. Give Paul at Bakes a call and I am sure he will be happy to inform you how to adjust it.

I like having a little pull it helps to keep the boat straight by offering that resistance.

You actually want a little pull. That way all you do is hold the steering wheel against the pull and you'll be able to track a straight path. Otherwise, if the steering wheel has no pull and you're centered, there is a lot of play between center and when you actually want to make a correction. There's the sorta dead zone on center whereby you have to make a lot of steering input to get the boat to go in the direction you want. Chris Get the Grip you Deserve www.wakejunky.com
