15W-40 Rotella in my SAN. The PCM manual recommends 15W-40 and Rotella (Shell) seems like a good brand. The manual also recommends against synthetic. Marine oil is hard to find and more expensive. I'm sure you are good with any 15W-40 as long as you are changing it within the manufactures recommendations.

Mine doesn't take too long as long as you let the boat warm up before you drain it.

It doesn't matter what type of forum you go to(truck, car, boat) any time you ask a question about what oil to use there will be 100 different answers. Manufacturers recommend what they have tested with. It doesn't necessarily mean it is the best. The only thing I know for sure is that regular oil changes are the key.

I have a friend who is a engine builder and also boats. Last year he recommended the Rotella T to me as well. The Rotella T diesel oil was recommended because they were able to get by some legislation about having zinc in the oil (something about it being for diesels it was not included). However, that has recently changed and it is no longer being made with the higher levels of zinc... You may be able to get it by using an additive. I have an I/O and will be switching to Mercruiser oil and changing it more often.

20/50 is usually used in older engines with higher miles/hours, or race engines with bigger tolerances. 50 is pretty thick especially in hotter climates for a late model healthy engine.

My boat has the Black Scorpion 330hp and the manual recommends running a Quicksilver synthetic blend.

^^^Same here. I ran that until it was out of warranty then switched. I dont leave oil in long enough in any of my vehicles to justify the price of synthetics.

It is interesting that Mercruiser, the world's largest inboard manufacturer, recommends a 25-40 spec oil, which happens to be pretty tough to find in any brand other than their own. We worked for a long time with our oil jobber here in Sac, and have settled on Valvoline Synthetic 20-50 for most of our inboard and sterndrive applications. We always ask the customer and tell them they have a choice of using the Valvoline, or we will use whichever oil their particular manufacturer specifies if they so choose. The Valvoline Synthetic is extremely good oil, and it costs quite a bit. As long as you are changing the oil anywhere close to the recommended drain intervals, you will be fine with pretty much any quality lubricant, conventional or synthetic. The simple fact is that the typical ski/wake boat engine is not going to stress the lube hard enough to cause any issues. Guys running ultra high HP units, with huge bearing stress loads (like turbo or blower applications), need to be a bit more choosy with what they feed the crankcase.

Is it bad if you put in 15W/40 when there was already 10w/30 in it? I had 15-40 because that's what was on the oil cap, but when I had my last service they put in 10-30. I was on the water, the boat needed more oil and 15/40 was all I had on board. Should I drain it all and start over?

I wouldn't worry about it. You have created a minor blend of 2 oils that are both perfectly fine in your motor.
