I tried many times... 24 according to the video camera. They all look about like the four attempts you can see here.

Hey mate, none of these are whirlybirds, they're just laid out tantrums. You might feel like you're rotating because you've turned your head but in reality, the board is just going out the back a little.

Here's what it should look like:

Here's a great tutorial:

and another one:

You need to punch the handle across your face, then look over your shoulder to initiate your spin. If done right it almost feels like an unwind.
Let us know how you go!

I used to do whirlys and I am bringing them back.

From watching your video the first tip I would give is to actually throw the whirly without the handle. Set your tantrum and punch the handle across your face and actually let go of it. This should let you feel the rotation. A lot of people get stuck and think they are getting the rotation but the handle is holding them up and they are just doing a funky tantrum.

Once you get comfortable with this, you can start trying the them with a “dumper”. A dumper will provide some slack in the line, so you have the handle but not that line tension that pulls you back and does not allow you to spin the whirly. (A dumper is a slight turn by the boat in the direction you will be traveling across the wake. It makes the wake steeper giving you a more straight up pop and eliminates a lot of line tension. This is good for a lot of tricks)

Finally the line tension can really pile drive you into water. I would use the above tips along with the trampoline to avoid the big time smackers.
