When Shaft first came out, they made a big deal about it being 16 mm. Is that the best camera to make movies with or what.

If you have the film experience and LOTS of money
a 35 mm camera is the best. Then, I would say that a 16 mm camera or even an 8 mm camera would be the next best thing, but it's still expensive and you have to have a good background in photography or film in order to know what your doing. The first few rolls of film you shoot in 35mm, 16mm, or 8mm might not even come out, yet will still cost you a minimum of $400 to develop and transer to tape or DVD. The cheapest and easeist way to go is Mini DV. It's cheaper and easier to use (point and shoot), yet allows you to get as complex as you want. Also with mini DV you don't have to develop film and the picture is much clearer. By filming with a Mini DV camera, the only thing you really loose is that "film look" which can be immitated with Adobe or any other editing program. If you have LOTS of money and a background in either photography or film I would go with a 35 mm camera, but if you're not willing to spend thousands of dollars, yet still want that "film look" use a 16mm camera. For about $200 you can buy a used Russian 16mm camera on ebay, and then shell out about $30 per per roll of undeveloped film (about 12- 15 minutes of film, depending on how well you can load it). Once you have filmed your movie, you then send it off to a deveoping company (about $15 for shipping and $50 per roll for developing and transfer charges). Once you get your film back, you then edit it on a computer like you would with mini dv or you can go old school and cut and splice the film (good luck with that). If you decide to go with 16mm film you are probably going to wind up about spending a minimum of $1000 for a 5-15 minute movie. If you're not made of money and have little film experience, I would take that money and buy a cheap mini dv or digital 8 camera with a USB or firewire connection. With your left over money, spend it on some good editing software, water-proof housing for your camera, a tube, some DV tapes, and gas for you jet ski if you're lucky enough to have one. Then go get some friends and film a bunch or tricks from every possable angle until you've got some decent footage. Then hit up the editing program and make it all come together. Next thing you know, you have one hell of a wakeboard movie. Regarless of what type of film you decide to use, you are going to spend lots of money, so before you start spending it, make sure you've got a basic plan and some good riders. If you ask around, you might be able to borrow someones camera or use their computer to edit. If you're really luck you might even get a small production company to back you. Good luck filming and I hope it works out.

Ben is right. So go out and get a miniDV camera and use that until you get good enough, or have enough money, to shoot some 16mm film. Figure on $1000 for film and developing for just enough footage for a 15 minute film - and that won't include the cost of editing and duplicating it.

If you have the money, then a good 3ccd miniDV cam is the way to go - such as the Sony VX2000 or Canon GL2. Those with accessories will cost about $3000.
