I have a stock JL Audio Marine M101b5-4 10" free air sub that came in the boat. I don't like the sound of it at free air and want to build a ported box. Anyone know the specs for a ported box on this sub? Is it possible if it's a free air sub?

The only thing I can find is specs for a sealed enclosure and would rather have a ported box in the boat (I think it sounds better). If I can't find specs I will just build a sealed box no biggy.

I suggest that you go with a sealed box. However, you might be able to find specs on JL's website. Free air subs are just built beefier to withstand the variances in air space. The tradeoff is sound quality.

With that said, sealed boxes will almost always "sound better" than ported unless you really know how to tweak a port. And even then, a ported box only sounds good at one frequency. $.02

yep, just got off the phone with JL and they told me not to put that sub in a ported box. There are no specs for it and they do not recommend it, but only use it for free air or sealed enclosure (1.25 - 2.0 cu feet)

Really, just upgrade to a new sub. I've got a used JL 10W3 that i would sell in the $60 range, that would sound WAY better than that free air sub, whether you put it in an sealed or ported enclosure. Craigslist is your friend, don't be afraid of used subs. If its cosmetically in good shape, and isn't burned out, you can save tons of money over new. Good as new? probably not. But worth the savings? Often it is!

I put it in a sealed box (1.4 cubes) this weekend and it sounds way better. All I need to do is find a 12" to add and I will be happy.
