Its ULM Wake’s first season. And so far, it has been great. The team traveled to Baton Rouge and took 3rd in their first ever contest. Regionals were fun in Beaumont, with the team taking a honorable mention in Alliance Wakeboarding Magizine. But now it’s our turn to bring the other schools in for a little event that the university calls Spring Fever. Spring Fever is an annual, weeklong event held on campus. There are crawfish boils, baseball games, concerts, and muddy game of volleyball that they call oozeball. But this year, since ULM Wake has been doing it big right out of the box, we want to do Spring Fever big. That’s why we are doing the Spring Fever Rail Jam on the last day of Spring Fever week, Friday April 23, 2010.
The Spring Fever Rail Jam will take place on beautiful Bayou Desiard which runs right through the middle of campus. We are planning on having 2 rails, a kicker, and some soon to be determined monster of a rail. Most likely the 2 rails will be a long flatbar with ramps of both ends and A-frame of some sort. The kicker will most likely be a 5 ft ramp. Each rail will have a sponsor. A sponsored rail will be referred to as that sponsors rail. For example, the A-frame will be referred to as the CAB rail during the event by the commentator since Campus Activities Board is a sponsor. The top 4 sponsors will have a rail, but all sponsors will be able to place a banner on the foot bridge at the end of the rail course. We will be using a jet ski to pull the comp, that way the action will be fast and steady.

This will be a collegiate team comp. There will be a entry fee for each team, the amount is undetermined right now, but will be announced with at least 3 weeks warning. Best 5 riders will represent each team. A wakeskater and a girl wakeboarders score will be multiplied by 1.5. Guys score is what they get. The score will be determined by 2 judges that are not a part of any team. The criteria for the score will be difficulty and style. Once all teams have competed, the scores will be added together for each team. The highest 2 teams will compete again in the finals. There may be an option for a 3rd team if the scores are close enough. This decision will be made by the judges and if time permits. All competitors will be required to sign a waiver releasing ULM Wake, University of Louisiana at Monroe, and all sponsors from legal action against them in case of an accident. There will be some sort of prize, whether it’s a trophy or some wake related items.

The team has reserved Bayou Park on campus for spectators to watch the whole competition with an unobstructed view. Shadow Haze is planning to be on hand to play tunes all day long. We are also planning on having some type of food. We are currently looking for a sponsor to help us out with that. There will be several displays set up by the sponsors if they wish to do so. We are planning on having a live commentary for the entire event. Sponsors names will be read over the loud speakers several times during the comp. Any signage that a sponsor wishes to put up must be approved by the coordinator of the event. But banners and such are encouraged. Bayou Park is basically in the middle of campus so there will be plenty of exposure to the campus community for each sponsor.

If you would like to sponsor the rail jam in anyway, please contact the coordinator, Nick McDonald, at 318-381-2058. We will have a form that each sponsor will need to fill out so that we will have a record of who gave what. Right now, are needs are money, lumber for rails, sliding surface for rails, food, and prizes.

If you would like to donate to the team itself instead of the rail jam, we wont turn you away. We are currently in need of money and materials to build a winch (10hp horizontal engine, aluminum, 1000 ft of wakeboard line, etc.), boards for members that cannot afford boards at the moment and a trailer to put everything in to travel to tournaments with. We also have many expenses like entry fees, travel and insurance. If you would like to help us with any of these please contact Nick McDonald; Coordinator, at 318-381-2058 or mcdonana@warhawks.ulm.edu.

I just copied and pasted the above from our little handout for the rail jam. If you have any questions or are interested in participating, please contact me.

I realize this is a friday event. If there are enough teams we will continue the comp into saturday. If there is enough interest we will also have a individual comp.

The best rail rider overall will win a Company severance 138 with Company pro Bindings. There will also be more prizes for the teams that win.

We have a area for camping for all who want to. Its the Grove next to the football stadium, walking distance from the bayou where the jam will take place.
