So, the previous owner of my boat used bags of concrete mix wrapped in duct tape as ballast to suppliment bags.

I have never been a huge fan of this stuff, but he gave me his solid ballast and it was free with the boat, so why not take it.

It pretty much sat in my garage for the first season of owning my boat...

Over the winter, I had to remove my gas tank to access my rudder and replace the rudder packing rope. When I accessed under the gas tank, I noticed some "dead space" that was almost the exact size of the concrete bags. I figured a couple bags low in the corners couldn't hurt...

If anyone is local to the Portland/Vancouver area, I can hook you up with any of the 4 remaining bags of concrete mix...

So, I added one to each corner. They fit perfect. I think they weigh about 60 pounds each. So I can deal with 120 pounds of permenent ballast...

I have six 50lb bags of sand in pillow cases under my bow seats. 2100lbs of hidden ballast is fun. Sometimes you have to get creative to hide it all.

Last year we bought a bunch of scrap lead, melted in a turkey deep fryer and poured it into bead pans, making "Lead Bricks". Worked great. Coated them in a rubber rocker guard and then a layer of clear coat on top.

I have about 600lbs throughout the boat. Hardly takes up an space. Each brick is about 25lbs.

I run 200lbs of Lead Wake bags, either port side on the nose depending on what we are doing. Plenty of water ballast too.

I don't have a picture but I have quite a few 25 and 45 pound weights from a dead lift set. I puth them in a plastic bag and then wrap in Water resistant tape. They are pretty thin and lie flat, making them easy to hide in the boat,

Whwen we used to wakeboard I had several 1lb gas cans filled with lead shot. Easy to move and balance out the wake.

Very cool. DIY for sure.

Damn, lead sure is the solid weight of choice. it's amazing how heavy it is for its size.

The scrap lead and custom weights and sizes is a pretty cool idea. It looks like scrap lead is going for about $1/lb nowadays, for that price you can get more for your money just buying a bunch of pop bags and those would be easier to place around everywhere since they're flexible.
I guess if you ran across some locally for cheap/free it'd be a good DIY though.
