I came across this article that said you can pour olive oil in the lake water to make the water glassy. Has anyone tired it? How big of waves (ripples) do you think this would tame?

Greg Kestin, a theoretical physicist researcher at Harvard University, explains what, exactly, is going on when he dumps a tablespoon of olive oil into a rippling lake.
The oil begins to spread out and calm the waves, enable, what looks like, a smooth surface of water in the middle of the wavy waters.
After about two minutes, the oil can be seen spreading out and getting the job done.
Kestin explains that the oil has spread out to a layer of one molecule thick. Also, he points out, the oil molecules are balancing on top of the water molecules. When the wind blows, it normally catches and moves the water, causing the waves. In this case, it moves the oil instead of the water and slides it around the lake's surface. The result is a placidly, calm patch of about 1/2 acre of water.
