My budget is around $40k but I'm willing to stretch that a little if needs be for the right boat. My priorities are;

1. Wake surfing
2. Wake boarding
3. Waterskiing & tubing for the kids

Torn between getting something a little newer like Sanger, Supreme, Axis or do I go older for a Natique, Malibu, etc and put some money into upgrades like ballast, stereo, perfect pass, etc.

My family owns a 2001 Calabria i-drive since new. But it's time for me to get my own boat now. So I am familiar with owning a boat, etc etc. And I'm blown away by how expensive boats are these days.

Centurion Avalanche C4 will probably be the best boat in that price range... not the ONLY option, but a really good one in my opinion.

I would say with surfing #1, look into:

Centurion Enzo
Sanger V230
Wakesetter LSV
MB B52 or TomCat
Tige Rz2

Because you have no warranty I always advise buy quality first. That means the best brand and the best boat you can possibly afford. Money saved on a low purchase price is almost always spent several times over in repairs and poor resale value.

Given that I say buy the best Malibu you can find and spend a little extra to get a good one. I pick Malibu because they are a top brand and tend to sell for less than the other top brands (Nautique and Mastercraft).

And with wake boarding and waterskiing being 2 and 3...... I would say the LSV would be the only good recommendation in that bunch. Not that the others are bad, but they certainly don't cover all 3 quite as good as-

Malibu 23 LSV, Or VLX
MC X15 or X30
Newer hull SAN 210
Axis A22, T23 etc

If it's 80+% surf, I would certainly consider the others.

It would be helpful to know where you live. I assume California based on the California specific makes you mentioned. otherwise it becomes much harder to recommend Supreme or Sanger or MB.

And if you were in California, I would recommend the MB TWB23, Sanger V230 or older Malibu VLX/LSV. If Shawn's boat (MB TWB23) was for sale I would have just told you to buy his sight unseen.

I live in both Utah and Montana. I'd travel 500 miles in any direction for the right boat.

Are there specific years or platforms on these boats I should be looking for?

Here is a nice 2005 VLX in Hurricane that would be hard to beat for $35obo http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=34819517

It probably still is, you just need to do a quick Rupee conversion.

For Under 40K...

Mb Sports 2012+ B52
Tige 2004+ 22V
Centurion 2008+ Enzo
Sanger 2008+ V230

Solid boats!

If you found a 2012 TWB23 for under $40, you found the deal of the year. I think a loaded 2011 for 40-45 or 12 for 45-47 is a bit more likely. If i didn't have the need to ski, I would have chosen the F22 or TWB In that price/year bracket.

Where are you located? I'm in NC. I have a 2008 Centurion Enzo 240 with some really nice upgrades, I am thinking about selling. A little over your budget, but well worth it. Let me know if you are interested.

Right now I am looking at the following that are close to me and within my budget. Please let me know your thoughts on these boats. They are all within $36-42k asking price, similar hours and condition based on the ads. I haven't looked at any in person yet.

2013 V215 w/ wake series package
2008 Tige Z1
2006 Malibu VLX

Also found these:

2011 Axis A20
2005 Supra 21V
2006 Natique 210

2004 VLX that's quite a bit cheaper than the others.

I have a buddy selling a nice Super Air Nautique. It's a great crossover boat. It skis well, wakeboards amazing and surfs well.

Email me if you are interested. I live in Sandpoint ID and should be pretty close.

If surfing is the main goal for under 40k i'd be looking for a Centurion Avalanche or Enzo, or a Tige 22 or 24V or Ve. You can probably find a decent on of those for under 40 which will leave you a bit of cash to add a nice big ballast system.
