winch prices???

is it me or does paying multiple thousands of dollars for a winch sound a little crazy???

i guess in comparison to a boat yea its cheap but 3-10k for a winch just seems crazy to me. i they cost a little bit of coin to make but not 3k worth of coin.

thoughts?

I feel its only money... there is always another pay check coming around.... Winching has opened up a tottaly new style of riding and a new experince... Find a sick river... or ledge... chilling with your buddys and have a few beers is will worth the money.... If money is tight... Spilt it with a buddy!! IMO worth every cent...

you can find grinch winches on the internet for $1100 all over the place. I just got one a couple of months ago for that price and the other day I started looking and found two more for around that price.

I give Yankmeister props for being forthright on their qualified self-endorsement. All to often we see first time posters on here saying things like: "hey, has anyone heard of Ollie's Magic Wakeboard Oil? I saw it on the internet and my friends say it changed their life and riding"...then when we look at their profile the email address is: "wner@OlliesMagicWakeboardOil.net">owner@OlliesMagicWakeboardOil.net". I will not try to bridge the logical gap between my hypothetical Magic Wakeboard Oil and Yankmeister but wish the winch company the best in this blossoming area of our sport.

My pulldozer is being shipped to me right now. I'm in Tampa and it cost 250 to ship from California so basically across the country. Hope this helps.

i think this one looks good with a 8hp Briggs & Stratton engine ... for 1999$ expensive but Briggs & Stratton is almost unbreakable...

I would much rather pay $350 less and get a lot more HP with a Yankmiester winch.

Andy, how much you selling that magic wakeboard oil for? Does it go on my shred plank or do I massage it into my biceps? Either way I just want to boost.

benjamin, have you ever winched? you dont need more horsepower. A bigger engine just makes it heavier to carry and get into spots. With proper technique you can get up with no problem behind smaller winches. I can deep water start with a wakeskate (way less surface area to get me to keep me up) with no vest with a 5.5hp briggs with a centrifical clutch.
a 6.5 with tav is perfect unless you need to go insanely fast to do really long gaps.

^ for a chinese knock off motor and a centrifical clutch...I'd rather pay $350 more for a reputable motor and tranny.

I think its funny that everyone wants a winch priced basically at cost, not including labor ~800-1500 Depending on a few things, but will gladly pay 3-4 times manufacturing cost for a boat/car/house/lawn mower ect.

I could be wrong, but isnt the generally accepted breakdown:

Manufacture to dealer: 100% markup
Dealer to consumer: another 100%

So if something costs $100 to make. It costs the dealer $200 and it costs the consumer $400?
(I know thats simplified and margins fluctuate for different industries)

Imo, most of the winch's that are out there are a bargin and the companies are making close to nothing on them, so why nickle and dime this industry vs boats/boards/ropes/handles/bindings yada yada...

I think yankmeister is a great idea. Winches were suppose to get wakeboarding to people who couldnt afford a boat. Originally people were saying 600 to 1000 bucks. Yankmeister is the closet in price so far with the most power. And to mitch, its not about more or less horsepower, its torque and gearing. I think if the 11 is geared right with a lot of low end torque that winch could be sweet

And scott why would the dealer be making more money than the mfg. I would say it would be more like 100 to 200 to 250 or 300

Kevin...whatever the formula is, the manufacture is not selling boats/boards/handles/bindings anywhere close to cost, whereas the current winch market is priced at what appears to be a low margin operation...and people still complain, go figure.

Add up the components of a 'good' winch and I bet you'll find yourself at about a grand...and then you'll just have a pile of parts on your garage not put together.

Mitch...yes. I have winched before. I like more HP because you have the capability to deep water start 2 people if you want and the capability to load the line without worrying about lack of power.

And the bigger engine just makes it heavier to get a better work out!

The first winches available on the market were the Blackbox and Grinch, and both went for about $2,000. Nowadays that number has dropped to $1500 for a variety of reasons, but anyone that was thinking about selling winches for $600 to $1000 either has a lot of scrap metals/materials layin around or they probably haven't ever built a winch. Or they're using crappy/knock off parts. There is almost no profit in any of the well built winches. You get what you pay for.

+2 only winch on the market i'd consider buying.

it's all in the gearing, the rider, and the driver. more power = more weight.

but i guess if you're not trying to winch remote gaps and natural terrain it doesn't matter too much.

the idea that you NEED more HP on a winch is like saying you need a bigger boat, bigger truck to pull it, and more ballast if you want to progress your riding. it's nice to have, but not necessary for most applications.

Just for a little history lesson. Pulldozer winches is the same thing as blackbox winches. It started out as myself and a good friend building a winch for ourself, then graduated to blackbox and is now Pulldozer. Enjoy.

I don’t think $1500 is the norm for a professionally built winch from a real company. Pulldozer's undercutting the current competition, and could probably charge more now that it has descent brand recognition in the market. Personally I think somewhere around 2000-2500 plus or minus depending on features would be an acceptable retail figure considering materials alone are roughly a grand.

If these are legitimate businesses they will have other expenses (advertising, dealer network, distribution, events, insurance, tools, equipment, shipping, packaging, rent, electricity, website, worker wages, merchant accounts, blah blah...) and still need a profit margin, so the bargain garage builder will of course be cheaper. - I think Pulldozer is just the name of a homegrown winch, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Its cheapest to build your own, but then you have to deal with the headache of sourcing parts, engineering the whole thing, and spending a lot of time on it; possibly not getting it right the first time around, in which case buying one would now seem appealing.
