my friends and I are considering buying an older (like early 90's?) inboard boat, and making it into a wake machine. what I need to know is what boats of that era are best for doing this, cause i know you cant just throw 2000 lbs of ballast in any old boat and expect an aweosme wake. I would think any ski-specific boat is probly not gonna work too well but i could be wrong. Any input is appreciated.

I've seen the wake from one of those old Hydrodyne's and I couldn't believe how nice it was. Same goes for the supra sunsport as well.

Check out either 1996 Ski challengers or 1997 wake challenger from bayliner. They are 22 foot v-drive boats that are easy to install ballast systems in. I picked mine up for 12K and installed perfect pass, tower, ballast, and it throws a great wakeboard wake! Duffy

It always amazed me that Bayliner put out those Challengers. Theres a guy on my dock who owns one. It needs some serious TLC but otherwise kicks up a great wake. The guy is your typical Bayliner owner, never covers it, never cleans it, never tightens bolts, etc. So it's slowly working it's way to a POS. I know a guy down in Pasco who had one too. It had like 2500 lbs of ballast & 1200 hrs on it when he upgraded to an LSV.

Bill, I always thought that if you could pick up a Challenger for a good price and put a wrap on it (to cover the Challenger graphics) you could have a pretty cheap boat with decent looks and a killer wake.

Yep, the guy in Pasco had all the decals & logos stripped off it. You never would have guessed it was a Bayliner. He had even repainted the trailer so it was totally incognito. I believe he told me he owned that boat almost 10 yrs & sold it for almost the same price he paid for it too.

I second the PS205, I have a 94 and with about 3k in ballast and an acme 12* prop, the thing is a beast. No need for PP if you have a decent driver. It is my first inboard boat, slapped a monster tower on it, new prop on ebay, she was set up for about $14k.

Here is a picture of my ski challenger http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=3138 I have since removed the graphics. It only has 130 hrs and really for the price is hard to beat. Not trying to argue about Perfect Pass, but it's the greatist dollar investment I've made, anyone can drive and it makes surfing way more fun. Super easy to install too!

I'll disagree with the "ski" Nautiques being bad. One of the best wakes I've ever seen was a 92 or 94 open bow Ski Nautique with a Fat Sac in the bow and another one on top of a Fat Seat where the back seat once was.

dhcomp, there was such a thing as a Ski Nautique Open Bow that I believe was a foot or two shorter than the Sport. The hull was different. I have seen them called SNOB in some threads if you want to do a search for them. I don't think they made many though. I have been in and around older Sunsetters, 2001's and Sport Nautiques and they all make great wakes. I have always wanted to ride behind a Sunsport, but haven't had the chance.

Additionally, Maxum made a V-drive that was actually the same hull as the above mentioned Ski/Wake Challengers that Bayliner sold. Somebody had one on the board here.

I also would have to disagree with the Ski's being bad. I own a 1991 closed bow SN and it has a great wake. I put three sacs in it and love it.

Speak of the devil. One in Spokane... although it looks like an inboard. And 22' Challenger in Seattle. Both seem a bit high priced considering the fact that their a 10 yr old Bayliner, it's fall, and the down economy.

Man, that Maxum looks a lot like a Maristar. Who owned MC back then? Was it Brunswick/US Marine?

Bill - it was supposed to. Along with the Sea Ray Ski Ray these were the boats made by US marine that were supposed to break into the ski boat market. Entry level - Bayliner Ski Challenger Mid Level - Maxum Ski Max Higher Level - Sea Ray Ski ray series (3 models to pick from, a small inboard, larger inboard and outboard) Not that different to how MC is now trying to spread its wings into new types of boat (CSX series).

I have heard of them, and I have heard they are a nay. You may turn up something on a search here, but seems like this was discussed a few times over the years and the general concensus was that you could do better for the money. I have no personal experience with the brand.

how are the older supra saltare's? they are 23 foot and seems like they could put out a huge wake. the only downside i see is the 454 and gas would be a bitch, but it could definitely handle ballast easily.
