I have an old Cell Block and looking for something a bit more comfortable and less bulky and will protect the ribs. I have taken some hard rib shots lately. Maybe a hybrid thats super floaty. Do not want to argue Comp vest vs CGA. Any help finding a more comfortable CGA would be great.

09 JP Murray
08/09 Hyperlite side entry CGA.

Best 2 CGA IMO.

I ride both the LAW and the Hyperlite CGA. I have to give the Hyperlite the nod for comfort and mobility.

BTW I hate side entry but this one makes up for it in comfort.

Why do they make side entry other than style? You have zero leverage to pull the straps tight when you have to reach around behind your back to pull them. Shouldn't they pull forward?

Oneill law was the old favorite CGA.

Old Full Metal Jacket which I believe is the new Murray. The Hyperlite side entry seems pretty nice as well, but I think the JP one has been bending mobility.

the hyperlite side entry is lighter by a noticeable difference plus the swat is 65 bucks more expensive
Old     (gunnertom4593)      Join Date: Sep 2008       05-10-2009, 9:02 AM Reply
Is there any particular reason why helium vests are insanely expensive?
Old     (woz)      Join Date: Feb 2009       05-10-2009, 10:20 AM Reply
i was gonna buy a comp vest, my first one then i started reading this, are they bad? do they float you at all or do you have to do a little work to keep yourself up? also the hyperlite side entry, is it as bulky as it looks in pictures? if not you all might have changed my mind. and the price is nice too
Old     (dohboy)      Join Date: Aug 2007       05-10-2009, 10:24 AM Reply
Helium vests are a little more than other vests like Jet Pilot and O'neill. The quality is the same as the other brands IMO. I guess you are paying for the style. Boardstop has them or try google or bizrate. Its all just personal taste in vests. The differences aren't huge between them mostly looks and some mobility.
Old     (ericdizzzle)      Join Date: May 2009       05-10-2009, 10:45 AM Reply
I bought the hyperlite side entry after trying on both the heliums and the JPs, overall i thought the hyperlite was lighter than both the other vests, it had more mobility and was more comfy, its all your preference tho, CGAs are gonna take some of your impact if you do fall, all preference just like anything with wakeboarding

Adam, I will go ahead and beat a dead horse by saying the key to a vest is whether it will float you head up when you are unconscious.

It is relatively easy to stay afloat with a comp vest. But if you are unconscious, you will submerge. Do not under estimate how fast you will sink with no air in your lungs (i.e. most people that slam into objects have expelled the air in their lungs upon impact). It is faster than the few seconds it will take for the boat to turn around.

And since you never know when or if that will occur, you are at greater risk of drowning with a comp versus a CGA vest. For many, the style and flexibility is worth the extra risk. For others, it is not. Personally, I wear a JP O.G SE CGA and I can not tell that it alters my ability to spin or move.

Definitely agree with Vision, i'd rather have my life saved and not drown rather than knowing whether I look cool or not
Old     (jdwake1)      Join Date: Sep 2007       05-10-2009, 8:02 PM Reply
I wear the same vest as vision and I am actually selling it right now it's the one in my picture barley used in great condition.

So, is there a significant difference between the Hyperlite side entry and the special agent, besides the zipper location? Is the Special agent bulky, or is it decent as well?

Also, is there anything that helps keep the zipper up on the side entry?
Old     (bobenglish)      Join Date: Mar 2008       05-11-2009, 2:46 PM Reply
I have a special agent which is a good vest. I know ride with a JP SE O.G is thinner and slightly more flexible.

The JP SEs have a velcro tab to help keep the zipper up.

i've found a untapped gold mine! i've had or have a jet pilot, helium colin wright, body glove, and billabong. i gotta say you guys have to try out walmart! there are these neuprene vests called "v-flex", they're great. they're cga and give the most movement of any vest, plus $40!
Old     (wakerider111)      Join Date: Jul 2006       05-13-2009, 7:26 PM Reply
i saw those v-flex things^^ seemed pretty decent for vests to stock a boat with, never considered it for something more... but then again i don't have half the vest experience you do garold (and most any one else for that matter).
Have you actually tried it in the water for a good length of time? i half worry that the v portion might stretch out... i don't know

Personally i have only had WATER time experience with a simple sterns thing, the 07 eco vest by body glove, and the hyperlite agent.

of these three i'd rank:
#1 HY Agent - loved the body hugging fit and the longer length was kinda nice. also liked how less than half the belts were hidden in the vest in case twisting happens (too bad it was my summer job's property and not mine)

#2 simple Sterns neoprene guy

#3 Body Glove Eco- kinda disappointed me. really happy at first but then it stretched out a lot. the hidden straps get twisted and some of the foam too. most i ever spent on a vest (never spent more than $20 till then) and most troublesome. it will be a back-up in my future boat if i ever get one

I'm interested in the Watson SE CGA... hopefully if i ever pull the trigger on that it wont be aimed at my head ;(

jeremy, i actually prefer the cheapo. surprisingly it's as comfortable and allows as much movement as the billabong comp vest i have. they float great and last! my buddy (who weighs 235+) bought one two years ago as well. i've thrashed him across the lake on a tube and it's survived! keeps him afloat great. when i first got it i was just trying to get an extra vest for the boat. never even imagined a $40 vest would be so good.

Any pics of the Walmart vest. I am looking for some boat vests, but Walmart is like a 45min drive from here...

It would be nice to have some cheap vests for guests other than the orange neck ones haha

i found it interesting that sterns and helium are part of the same parent company. did not know it till i looked them up more

Yes pretty sure Coleman owns sterns who owns Helium, that happened a couple years ago.

chance, i'll post pics of the ones i have. what made me like'em compare to my billabong comp vest is that they are CGA! they only have neoprene padding down the front and each side of the spine. the middle of the back and side panels are just neoprene--no floatation padding.
