Anyone familiar with fly and drive vacations?

http://blog.touringplans.com/2011/02...t-can-be-done/

You go out or back in a rental car, and do the other leg of the trip with a one-way flight. I looked at this for a couple of cities. The furthest city from me is either San Diego or Seattle. So I priced things for San Diego. A one-way plane ticket was $177 (plus $20 for a checked bag). That much was good news. But then I checked one-way car rental (for mid- or intermediate size car, ~ Toyota Corolla). Thrifty and Enterprise came in at about $1,650. Hertz was about $1,800. Alamo about $1,950.

Are there any tips for getting better car rates?

Look on CL for someone who's moving and looking for someone to drive their car.

Also you didn't mention when and how long of a trip - I imagine that factors into rental rates?

3 weekends with the 2 business weeks in between. from what I saw, car rental rates for a single weekend are dirt cheap...if you pick-up and return to same airport

I search pickup in St Louis and drop off in San Francisco from Jan 12 - Jan 26 and came up with $50/day... or $54/day for something like a corolla.

what rental car agency? myself and another went through the list we had (hertz-avis-budget-national-alamo-enterprise-thrifty-dollar) and entered the information online and, we came up with the numbers I gave you. then we called Hertz and spoke in person with their customer rep, and she gave us back the same numbers we had before.

I'm not doubting your numbers, I just want to know what you did different. you can pm if you like. yes, I might be interested in those dates. but I'd also like to stay south (I'm trying to swing through some southern destinations like Corpus Christie, Tuscon and Lake Havasu).
