I just bought a 01 Mastercraft X-Star, and found out that the fuel gauge doesn't work properly.

The problem: Regardless of the tank level, the gauge reads full.

I found a similar thread, which mentioned something about the ground wire. I tried using a better ground, but the gauge still reads full (with 3/4 tank).

Any help, or suggestions?

Thanks!!!

you most likley need a new fuel sending unit

This 'supposedly' is a new sending unit.

The people I bought it from replaced the sending unit, but was never able to make it work properly.

Float might be stuck also.

same thing happens to my friends X-1. Reads full until it's about half empty. I think it is actually a common problem with these boats for some reason. I have heard of this issue numerous times now. I think you may just have to live with it

I thought about pulling the sending unit out, to see if that was a possibility. I didn't because I wasn't sure about the tank/sending unit gasket. It appears to be a rubber gasket only. Does that sound right, or should I go buy some liquid gasket 1st?

Thanks!

It is no big deal just pull it out the gasuket will be fine. if it is the kind with a float you can move it up and down and watch the gauge. MasterCraft was using a none mechanical gauge that had no float

I pulled the sending unit, and was able to get different readings by alternating the depth of the pickup.

Looks like you're right Scott...

Thanks for all the help!

could be a mis-matched gauge/sender, if you wanna really dig into it, take the gauge and tank sender to an auto electrician and get them to test the ohm range of both, if they are not the same rnage the gauge will read a bit off.

it could also be the wrong length send unit for the tanks

Have you tried adjusting the gauge? There are two little screws on the sending unit that you can turn to adjust how it reads.
