When you guys go out to the lake, how many sets do you guys do? My wife and I are mostly self taught beginners (w2w jumps so far). We would go for a minimum of 4 hours and once or twice have been out there for a good 6+ hours. I would guess that we do atleast 5 sets a day but sometimes many more.

I've went out and rode with a couple other better wakeboarders lately and I noticed they all barely go out there! It seems like they are usually good for 2 sets or something and then they are done. Obviously their sets are way crazier (inverts and spins)... But at the end of the day I'm trying my hardest to clear the wake too, so that takes a ton of energy too.(I'm just not using perfect form so I get worse results haha) Plus I'm falling every once in a while but they don't fall at all. Also they are definitely in better aerobic shape then me. So it's not like I'm just holding up better.

Their reasoning is that they start losing power and falling... But to me that seems like part of the 'practice'? I guess I consider getting the boat out onto the lake and then cleaning it and taking it back a s a huge hassle. So once I'm on the lake I want to be on the water till I can't anymore haha.

So lets hear it. How many sets do you guys do on a day at the lake?

2 sets usually at 30-45 min per set. Only 2-3 of us in my boat.

We always talk about doing 2-3 sets and it usually ends up being one set for 20-30 minutes.

5 sets seems crazy! Like totally crazy.
once you get to advanced levels of tricks, I agree that by the third set you are tired and falling more and that's when injuries often happen. The more advanced the tricks the worse the crashes can be.

Wakeboard schools will do 2-3 sets a day and they limit the time in the water to 20-30 minutes as well. Falling does give you a nice little rest too so not falling causes you to get tired faster.

OK. So I think I see the difference. My sets are most definitely not 45 minutes! I'm guessing my sets are maybe 20 min a piece or so (max 30min).....

Also maybe since I just started the sport, I'm still super eager and really excited to go every time.

I voted til I can't hold the rope anymore. But that always happens after 2-3 sets anyway.

If I am out all day, I mean all day for 12 hours. I will go for 4-6 sets. Sometimes it'll be 3 wake sets and a fun water ski set or something. Otherwise if it is a few hours its 2 sets each for 3 ppl. That takes from say 9-12... then go eat lunch, chill and hit the lake to have fun and relax with friends while its busy then ride again around dinner time and into the evening.

I don't ride much anymore due to being away from water, so it's 2-3 when I do get out.

It seems the more experience you get the shorter and fewer your sets get... Seems like the reasons are:
1. You start to realize fatigue and in turn realize you aren't going to "improve" your set from there on out. Which also means less injury prone and saves some energy for next set.
2. First half of your set your fresh and attempting things goes better.

This year (year 3 for us), by choice it would be anywhere from 2-4 sets for us. Usually 2 per time out on the water (break in between for lunch/etc/whatever). For time 15-30 min even with falls. Unless we are doing a bunch of surface stuff or falling all the time (i.e. trying new trick 10 times in a row) then we can push 40 min's... Or once someone decided it was likely last time out for the year... and didn't let go at all, for about 60+ minutes. It was dark, dark.

First year.. yea it was like ride all the time.

I am usually no more than 2 on the first day and one on the second (we normally stay a weekend). Maybe a slalom thrown in the mix on the Sunday AM if glass water.

At 45 I need to be able to move around the office the next week and by the time I have spend hours towing all the kids around there is no time anyway.

Depends on who I take out and when. If I'm lucky I'll get 2 in. When the kids aren't around maybe 3-4

I'm in for 1-2 sets per day, even on a weekend trip for a lot of the reasons mentioned. I also don't like to ride after having more than a couple beers and by the time to take a 3rd set I'm at least 3-4 beers in.

Usually 1 set for 40min to 1hr. If i do another its usually a fundamentals set or the water is just to good to pass up.

2 sets if there's time 20 - 30 minutes each, I'm usually out with a group of 6 or 7 riders so there is only time for 1 set each. Part of the fun of wakeboarding is hanging out in the boat and watching other riders, a lot can be learned from watching. It's best to take a break if you're really getting tired, that's when accidents can happen.

I am finding that the more advanced I get my sets decrease in time as well.. Mainly for the reasons stated above, but also from a logistical aspect. I am the only guy on my boat (typically) that runs at the weight I use, so it's a pain to take a set, drain bags, then re fill again to take another set. I also have been finding that I don't do marathon sets anymore when learning new tricks. I used to try a trick over and over (10-15+) and started realizing that it was easier to try something a few times and come back to it later.... From a injury and mental aspect.

I often ride only one set, for lack of time. But on a good day I do 3 of 20-30 minutes, with a lunch break in between.

It's almost always 2 in the groups I ride with. For us a EACH set is somewhere between 20-30min depending on how many times u fall. This is about 7miles of riding. Burns about 4 gallons of gas no matter what boat we use. So if your doing 6 legit sets make sure your paying the owner good for all that!

Usually one set for me. Between 30 and 90 min, depending on time constraints. size of crew, etc. Used to do 2+ sets, but in the past couple of years found 2nd sets to be a disappointment. Now I just get in, warm up, have some fun, work on some new stuff, then get back in the boat to socialize and chill.

Did a slower speed training 2nd set with less ballast a few weeks ago and strained my bicep. No more 2nd sets! Getting too old for that crap. :-\

I won't even go out if I can't ride two. The commitment of time and money isn't worth it for one set and I never got any better riding that way. I commit one set to landing all of my stuff and having fun, and the second set to trying new stuff and messing around.

If there's time around Alain and Brandon taking their 2 hour sets (hahahaha) I love to do 3 or more sets when we go out. First set just warming up and having fun, second set I try to work on new stuff, last set if time allows just for fun or maybe short rope fundamentals run. When I first started riding (which was less than four years ago) I LOVED to do a ton of sets a day...used to have Five Set Fridays and Seven Set Sundays! lol

5 and 7 sets? Wow! Unbelievable to me.

We are lucky and I mean lucky to get 2 sets in, usually it's just one.

But I'm older (39) and have kids and there are usually a few riders to get through.

Still I wish it was always 2 sets. Our wives call us greedy if we try for 2 lol.

- Hey, I heard he can five to six times per night? Is it true? My guess - viagra...
- No, he just count up every motion - forward and back

3-4 is normal. Unless weather or an unusually large crew keeps it at two, three is the norm. Fourth set may or may not happen and not everyone is up to it. Typically either a great set or lots of dumb falls from fatigue. I'd guesstimate about 15-20 mins is a typical set for us.

I guess it probably different for us in Canada too. By living at (not on) the lake, we often go riding after the kids are in bed. Its typical for our crew of 4 to meet and the marina at 8:30 and start riding at 9pm. Then when the sun starts to go down and it gets dark (about 10:30), we take a surf or just chill out and enjoy the peace and quiet on the lake. It's pretty great in the middle of summer having day light from 4:30am to 11pm!

Matt is a cardio machine. Teaches body pump kickboxing and extreme body cardio marathon combat starting at dawn on weekends, then wakeboards all day. Must be all that pent up agression from being locked up in office meetings all week.

I do one really good set, and if I'm feeling it or the water is good I'll ride again. Back in the day when my body was younger and I was eager to learn we'd ride 2-3 sets a day and crash over and over. My body just can't handle that anymore. I also don't want to make my crew watch me ride more than a set or 2 lol
