Blabel, the co-owner of my boat tows with an 04 4Runner with the v8 and towing package. To be perfectly honest, it tows our SSV better than my 04 ext cab silverado and it was cheaper than my truck. Had I known then what I know now, I would've purchased one instead of my truck because I like it better.

Darrin,

Yeah, you're right, some of us do.
Course, us Ford guys could say IH T-444.
And the Dodge guys couds say ISB- 12 valve, etc.
And the Chevy guys could say Isuzu....

Personally, I don't think the new min-hemi is all that special. Cool, and a step in the right direction, but when they start putting the crate 426 hemi in a rear drive platform with two doors and a 5 speed, THAT will get my attention.

I gots me a fully stocked out 4 liter 02 Ford Exploder. When the boats not sittin' on the lift out back my double wide, it tows my 3,500 lb rig perty good five miles to the river on the Florida flat land and it's paid for. >snort, scratch, spit, growl<

Blabel, I have to agree with Stanfield. Prior to my f-150 I had a 96 Z-71 with 5.7 engine. The new 4Runner out tows it in MY opinion. It is roomier on the inside than the 00 4runner we traded. With the V8 you are limited to full time 4x4 but you really don't notice it. Gas mileage sucks when towing long distances though 11-13mpg. Course, I do drive fast. Also, it isn't so big that you feel like you are driving a bus. Actually, it's kind of sporty. All in all, I love it.

Braking is fine on the stability side and I've towed a Bobcat with it around town.

Thanks, I didn't realize that it was all time 4WD. Oh well, I guess it's safer and it's not like we're getting it to do some serious wheeling anyway. We are getting one soon and I was just curious on the towing, thanks again.

gotta question that is probably gonna stir the pot, but..........You guys that are drivin 250/2500's or 350/3500's with diesel engines and/or expensive performance modifications, what is the purpose of having a tow rig that is capable of towing 10,000 plus pounds, but only using it to tow about 5000-6000lbs worth of wakeboard boat. Isn't that kinda like buying a bazooka to go on a squirrel hunt or buying a Lamborghini and never going over 55? Is there something that I am missing? If it costs extra to buy a diesel and more $ at the pump, what is the trade-off for getting one. Don't go gettin your panties in a jumble, it is just a question that may help make future decisions.

Ha. Valid question I suppose.

However, strange that it comes from a firefighter since an excessively jacked up 4X4 is standard issue in your industry it seems and half of them probably never even hit a mud puddle or tow anything at all.

No offense man, utmost respect for your profession, but I rarely see a firefighter sticker on a car - unless it's the wifey's or some other relative.

I used to tow my '86 Nauti 2001 with a four banger Toyota truck (old Tacoma) and now I've stepped up to a six banger (Ford Explorer). It gets the job done and I'd rather spend my money on other things than cars, but to each his own. I wouldn't mind having a bad ass jacked up truck, but it's not worth it to me. They come and they go so fast, I can't see spending a ton of money of a truck to turn around and sell it in three or four years.

Edit: keep in mind that I live in flat Florida and I keep my boat in the water, so if I had to tow 50 miles to the lake around mountains every weekend like some of these guys or if I traveled to different lakes often you bet your boat I'd have a fuel guzzlin' truck with an oversized engine, radiator etc.

I spend far more on fuel with my 5.9 360 gas engine than any of my friends do with their diesels. And though my 1/2 ton does fine towing, with more towing cap., a tow is always easier with a 3/4 or full ton.

Patt, no probleemo, no offense taken.

Besides the boat, I regularly park a 10 Ft. cabover camper with a full wall slide out on my truck.
I then hook up an enclosed trailer full of off-road toys to that. Total combined gross vehicle weight is right at 20,000.
Then, I tow the whole circus over Donner Summit, which, in case you are unaware, is a 7200 ft. pass. I do use the 4x4 several times a year at least, I even have chains for it.
I used to do the same pull with a gas motorhome, which came in at about the same weight as the truck/camper combo. It would burn about 31 gallons of gas to reach our desired fill stop out in Nevada.
The truck burns about 19 gallons of diesel fuel to do the same thing. Having the 4x4 crew cab capability makes perfect sense to me. Granted, parking lots are not it's best friend, but it is one vehicle that serves a number of purposes for us, and eliminates the need for more rolling stock in the front yard. Even just towing the boat to the lake, we climb and descend through two river canyons. As for the crew cab, we regularly have five or six adults in the truck, comfortably.
I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time, so it made perfect sense for us. Not trying to stir the pot either, but pulling a 4500 lb boat and trailer with a loaded down 4500 lb SUV might work in the flatlands, but in the mountains it can be a recipe for disaster. I can tell some of the drivers I see doing it are uncomfortable just by the looks on their faces.
And watching folks on the boatramp backing down a boat they can't see around is downright scary.

All that being said, making the decison to step up for the diesel option on any of the big three's full size truck requires some thinking and reviewing what you intend to use the truck for.
Based upon your needs, if you are considering upgrading from the standard gas V-8 to the big-block 8.1, V-10, or whatever, then I would walk right past it to the diesel.
If you are really going to use the truck, it makes sense. Maint. costs are about the same. While the diesel doesn't have spark plugs, etc., it does carry 14 or more quarts of oil, which must be changed like any vehicle.

This is coming from a guy who owned a number of small and big-block gas trucks and wouldn't even consider a diesel until I borrowed a friends Ford several years ago for a run to LA to pick up a car.

19 MPG out of a 1 ton 4x4 Crew cab truck, running 70 miles an hour with the a/c on going down there, and 14 mpg towing a flatbed car trailer with a 64 Nova on it coming back at 60 MPH convinced me...

I tow with an iForce.

Sometimes, I tow down to the local Chevron in a 22RE, though. Dang thing needs a timing chain at 155K. Buttload of plastic ex-timing chain guide in the oil pan. That's like a weekend or $900 at the dealer. Whoever said Yota made good shizzle?

Yes it is true a lot of firefighters drive lifted 4X's and I am one of them. It came that way from the dealer which the owner drove around. I got the same price as a new one without the lift. Couldn't pass on the deal. We got our F350 diesel crew in hopes of getting a Lance cab over. With the added weight of the camper plus the boat we thought it was a good idea. Plus we have three kids and needed the room of the burb/crew cab.If there is one thing we all need to remember it is "BOARD MORE/WORK LESS! J$

I also pull multiple car trailers a couple of times a year, and I put a ton of miles on the rig. During duck season this year I put 14k miles in 3 months, and I work from home. The additional power, stability, reliability, mileage, braking, and longevity. I towed a heavier boat to a destination 3 hours away, my neighbors pulled their cove cruiser with a suburban, they stopped to get gas, I still had a half tank. When I go to powell this year, the diesel will be a lifesaver.

Back in the early 1980s my brother pulled a 16 foot outboard with a 1981, 66 horse power diesel rabbit. He didn’t go far and he didn’t go fast.

Can you name the truck with four wheel drive,
Smells like a steak, and seats thirty five?
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Well, it goes real slow with the hammer down
It's the country-fried truck endorsed by a clown
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Hey, hey!
Twelve yards long, two lanes wide,
Sixty five tons of American pride!
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Top of the line in utility sports,
Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts!
Canyonero! Canyonero!
She blinds everybody with her super high beams
She's a squirrel-squashin', deer-smackin' drivin' machine
Canyonero! Canyonero! Canyonero!
Whoa, Canyonero! Whoa!
