Hi folks,

I have an issue with my boat trailer that appeared recently. It won't back up hill. As soon as the surge brakes are compressed at the hitch, it locks up the brakes. The trailer is plugged into the truck and I have made no alterations which would cause this. This is one of those out of the blue issues. Thoughts ?

Your truck's reverse lights, or the fuse to them, is burned out.

You either have a manual lock out pin to allow backing or you have a 5-way flat plug that sends power through the back up lights on your truck to release the brakes when backing. Check to make sure your plug has power when in reverse. If not you may have something as simple as a plug out or as bad as needing a new solanoid.

If your hitch ball is too low, say lower then level it can cause this to happen. Your surge has a hard time, becuase it constantly wants to push toward your truck due to gravity toward your vehicle being lower than your boat trailer. I have the truck hitch level or slightly (barely) taller then the boat trailer. Check your electrical connections on both ends. (Truck and Trailer). Does this happen with a different tow vehicle? You can always lock your surge brakes out with the trailer brake key if they gave your one when you bought your boat. Thit stops the brakes from working.

This is what it looks like.

You can call your trailer manufacture and have them send you one. They sent me one for free. Extreme is the model of my trailer.

Got it. I have an adapter that goes from 7 prong round to 5 prong flat. The connection there was bad. It looked as if there was oxidation on the male ends of the prongs. I worked that conection and all is well. Thank you.

Edit:
I bought my boat used and it did not come with the block out key. Other than the trailer manufaturere, can this be purchased at a place like Wesmarine ?

My buddy in a pinch put a quarter or nickel in his and taped it in there with masking tape. LOL. Your local boat service or dealership has to have those laying around. Anyplace that sells trailers like yours should have them. Good luck.

Not sure about West Marine. But a descent auto parts store. Or a trailer shop. Or an RV supplier.

Or just use a 1/2" nut & a piece of tape.

glad you figured it out. 1/2" washer and a magnet works too. I've used a nickel. I currently use a C clamp, guaranteed to stay!

If you have a flat plug just flip it up side down and turn on your head lights. Just remember to flip it back when you take off. I work at a dealership and never had a 5 prong on my truck. I just flip the plug over and hit the headlights and it backs up just fine. it gives power to the surge brakes and disengages them. that way you dont need a lock out key.

I was going to suggest what Nick said, that works every time. Just unplug it, flip it over plug it in an turn on them headlights. We use it every time we put the boat away. It's one of those tricks every boater should know to ensure that they are the bad ass of the ramp.
