Okay I already know it sucks tons of gas. I know the 7.3 is ideal and better choice engine. I know the 6.0 is the worst engine every made by Ford. What I want to know is the V10 able to pull a fully loaded down VLX and 8 adults, two dogs and still have plenty of power to make it up and over hills? Another important thing is stopping power. Would I need to up grade the brakes too? Or is it enough with the stock brakes.

If I get this one I want to put a small 2"/3" lift on it and some beefy all terrain tires on it. It will be my tow vehicle and family snow trip vehicle. Any suggestions on what lift or best set up for towing a boat?

Still on the fence, but I really like the room it has and that is sits on a 3/4 ton chassis. Am I crazy to be looking at this? Who has one and is there any regrets?

I had a 2001 F-250 SD with the V-10. It had an 8" lift with 37's and stock gears. It would pull my boat or 31' travel trailer pretty well but not to diesel standards. The truck got 7-9 mpg full or empty. It was a great truck and I had zero issues in the 100K miles I put on it but I wouldn't buy another without the diesel. We are actually shopping RV's now and it's hard to find a diesel class 3 as all the ford chassis have the V-10 but I wont do 7mpg again.

If you don't mind the gas mileage, then they are great trucks and very dependable. I had an 01 and an 05. I would highly recommend going with an 05+ as you get the 5 speed transmission, 3v motor and none of the spark plug headache of the 2v motors.

As for towing, I eventually lifted my 05 on 37s on stock gearing and was still able to pull my V215 without any issue.

3V spark plugs bring on a whole new set of problems. They wont shoot out by themselves but they won't come out when you want them to as well.

extremely heavy will not get out of its own way. We got passed by 18 wheelers going up the Baker grade pulling a Supra 22 SSV with 3 kids and gear. Keep looking for a 7.3

I have a '99 with the v10- 250 superduty and an '00 f150 7700 edition with the triton v8. believe both are basically the same underpinnings. personally, I think the v8 tows the boat a tad better. could be differences in the rear end gearing but that's my opinion.

if I was shopping, it would be a diesel before the v10.

I have a 99 F-350 Superduty with the V-10 lifted 4" on 35's... terrible towing power and piss poor mileage.
cant bring myself to get rid of it though as it only has 57K and its paid for

Well this is all bad news. This sucks, well I will find out Monday if I ended up purchasing a pile of crap. It is kinda of a silent auction type purchase. We place a really low bid and will find out Monday if the sellers agree. Hope I don't get it. My wife is pissed at me for this one. Especially that I also promised to trade her Jeep Commander in as a trade in. Totaly screwed, oh well live and learn.

I'm looking for an 05 6.0 excursion right now. Them suckers are badass.
I myself don't mind a 6.0 though.

^$260 3 months ago for the #10 plug.
sounds like a horrible exhaust leak when one comes out and of course it had to be the back plug under the cowl.

Great news. Offer not approved, I don't have to buy a turd. Thank god after the responses you guys gave me this is a great news. I think I am going to just spend the money on my wifes Jeep Commander and dump 2K in tires, muffler and brakes. I guess if a 7.3 become available at the right price I will buy it.

Thanks again wakeworld.

If you're going with a gasser look for an older 460 truck, lots more torque and slightly better MPG. The only SUVs that came factory with a 460 would be Centurion conversions, aside frmo that it would be anything that has been swapped.

7.3 PS is probably the way to go if you want one off the shelf in a SUV. Lots of time and money for anything fuel system related on a PS engine but they are pretty reliable and the trucks are old enough that I'd imagine powerstrokes are getting cheap. If my requirement was a SUV for towing I'd be looking at Centurion Bronco C350 through 94 to get the IDI rather than powerstroke and the better platform of the 80-97 trucks along with a Dana 60 front instead of that TTB nonsense. Hard to find but they pop up from time to time.

ford dealer was that much here. some smaller independent shops have ponied up the couple grand for the tool to do the job right. find one of those if you can.
half the cost was in the new coil on plug. stupid new spark plug wires

I had a 2000 F-350 crewcab, 4 inch lift. I did gears which made it way better. But the motor still had to spin 3500-4000 RPMs up the grade with a boat in tow. Road trips were very expensive. And when I sold it, I lost my ass.
