Doing research to help out a buddy looking to get into the inboard market. For a number of reasons, he has narrowed his search down to the Supra Sunsport 22'. Main reasons are he likes the bigger boat so he can use it on big waters sometimes, high freeboard, and has a really low budget of $10k.

I have seen this boat as early as 1984, and as late as 1991... My searches for info on the years of this hull, motors, and changes have left me with very little (even after searching the supra threads). If you experts could give me the years this hull was produced, motor options, and anything else he will need to know when shopping for his boat, I would appreciate it.

Thank you

I'm surprised you didn't find old threads more readily. Older Supra's are certainly popular as first inboards on a budget.

Lots of Sunsport owners on Supra's forum. Great boat. Sometimes the rebuilt ones go up for sale. Your friend should stay away from any before 91 that haven't had the stringers replaced. And, even then be careful. Some rebuilders cut too many corners like not glassing the underside of the floor.

Around 91-92 they started making composite stringers. The tell-tale sign is the windshield. Wooden stringers have a more squared off windshield whereas the composites have more rounded windshields. It's definitely worth looking for a composite version.

Most had 351 but there are a few 454s out there. Hull or interior changes were very minor, especially if concentrating on 92 and later. You'll find some with Pro Boss and fuel injection closer to 95.

No idea where you're shopping but this is one with the rounded windshield:

What specifically do you want to know? I started with a '92 Supra Sunsport, which is the first year of the all composite.

I got my boat with some basics (tower, dual battery, rear under seat ballast, board racks) and took it to the next level (added decent stereo, a DIY surf system, custom platform, tons of LED's, etc).

I pretty much know the boat inside and out. So think of your questions and ask away.

So the boat started in the mid 80's. They switched to all composite in 1992, evidenced by the rounded windshield. Most of them through the early 90's had the carb'd PCM351. Some of them had the PCM 351 Pro-boss (which had the GT heads and brought it up to the 285hp). Later on, I believe they offered it with the fuel injected GT-40 engine which was I think like 310hp or better???
The "factory" style towers were made by New Dimensions tower and are kinda expensive, but they look "right" on the boats. My boat had packing rope on the rudder so I had to pull the gas tank to change it.

The freeboard and playpen bow on the sunsports is fantastic. you can actually go to the archives on the skier's choice website and pull up old owners manuals and specs. There's an amazing amount of knowledge and help on the Supra Boat forum.

So, honestly if it were me, the shopping list would be simple:
  • get a 92 or newer.
  • You'll be fine with the 351 pro boss, but I was not in love with a carb'd engine.
  • I'd try to find one with a tower on it already.
  • Anything else is really icing on the cake.

This is basically what you're looking for, although it's a long way away and I question the condition of the vinyl.
