Hey guys, check it out! A friend and I found this pontoon for 100$ We stripped it down and had to do a little fiberglass work. We're putting a wall ride with a rail on top and the other half of the pontoon is just gonna be a big flat surface. I took these pics with my phone so hopefully they turn out ok. We still have some work to do, but here is what we did yesterday!

I want to find a pontoon like that to buy for cheap so bad. I've been planning on something like that for a while so that I can tow it around my cove and terrorize my anti-fun neighbors.

Thanks guys! We can't wait to hit it. For the wall ride, we're going to use ply wood to cover the frame and then put something slick on it. Anyone got any good ideas for the surface of the wall ride? We found some 1/16" HDPE for $28 in 4x8 sheets, but its going to add up to quite a bit of money. We also played with the idea of covering it with the decking, but it would be really heavy and put a lot of stress on that side! What else would you guys use for the wall ride that would be a slick surface and not brake our wallets?

Thanks,
Pierce

Check out the stuff they use on shower walls... its a white smooth material, flexes, made for showers so resists rotting, and is fairly cheap

Michael and Nick, do you know what the shower stuff is called or how big of sheets they sell?

you could use some vinyl flooring the kind they sell in 8'-12' by how ever long you need it! thats what ill be useing on my slider...
Old     (sidekicknicholas)      Join Date: Mar 2007       04-14-2009, 5:56 AM Reply
The shower stuff comes in 4x8 sheets

I thought about vinyl flooring but its soooo thin and usually not made for damp situations it will rot crazy fast.

*Hijack* - Forrest, what do you do that you use solidworks?

That thing is inspiring. I want to make one now. Too bad I'm not the one w/ time, money, or the friend w/ wood working skills.

The shower sheets they are referring to is called FRP I believe. However, it is pretty expensive if I remember correctly. They sell them in 4x8 sheets and are around 30 dollars a sheet.

Thanks for the help! I can't wait to get this thing finished. We haven't been able to finish it up due to work the past few days, but our goal is to have it finished by next weekend and try it out. I'll put some pics up whenever we can finish it and show yall the finished product!

Currently I am a tool designer for a thin-gauge thermoforming packaging company.

Is thermo-forming where a plastic is vaccuumed over a pattern?.... If so, I've done than, and solidworks.

Sorry again.

Ok guys, we made a little progress today. We have the rail up top and the transition up to it. All we really have left is to cover the wall ride and cover the top rail!

Old     (mxflyer281)      Join Date: Oct 2007       04-16-2009, 9:43 AM Reply
Just to clear it up I worked at home depot just before this new just like about 2 months ago and that FRP paneling is like $30 a sheet but its still better that PVC and cheaper than Trex a 16' board of the no name stuff lowes and depot sells is like $30 and thats only 6" wide

Looking good.... Is that on a regular pontoon trailer, or is that kind of a build in trailer deal??

Nick - Yeah thats the jist of t-forming. Sorry no interns as of now.... What position are you looking for....
Old     (pc332)      Join Date: Jan 2007       04-16-2009, 9:59 AM Reply
Nick, Hope you can make it down one of these weekends to ride

Phil, The pontoon is 20 feet, and the rail that we have right now is at 36 feet.

Forrest, the trailer is what came with it. It is some kind of custom built one. It works great for what were using it for.

hey, what did yall end up using for the wall ride, and how much did it turn our being?? high price?
Old     (pc332)      Join Date: Jan 2007       04-17-2009, 9:17 PM Reply
I don't know what it is called, but it is used for flooring and it is tongue and groove. It has 50 year warranty and is glued a lot thicker than plywood so we figured it would be better than just plywood for the base. It was $21 for a 4x8 sheet which was cheaper than treated plywood anyways. We split it three ways so it wasn't too bad. It has a pretty slick surface, but we were thinking about painting fiberglass resin on the wood sheets. It seems like it would be really slick when it would dry. Has anyone ever used that? I guess the only problem we could see is eventually over time it would crack off. What do yall think about using resin on the surface?

we thought about that..but decided trex was the better option...even better than trex is HDPE, if you look around you can find it in different thicknesses.

what you used is advantech and that is the stuff!! it will NEVER fail you! it will out last the rest of the fun box! i was thinkin bout the fiberglass too(i work with fiberglass) but it would crack too quick i think..... for the past few weeks ive been trying to find something that is cheaper and slick but i have found NOTHING!! they have us by the balls!! lol

i have a sheet of advantech at the house and some fiberglass ill pour some over it and see how tough it is....... ill let you know

yea, we were looking at the HDPE, but it is just so expensive, I don't think we can do it.

CZimmerman, Thanks, let me know how that resin turns out on the advantech, I'm anxious to see what it would do or how it would hold up?

email me. I bought 5 4x8 sheets of HDPE from a guy that works at a plastic mfg plant I can shoot you his email for $200 for ALL 5. This place is in the midwest but Ft. Meyers bought all there stuff here also.

taylor, how thick is the HDPE you're talking about?
Old     (k2rider2690)      Join Date: Apr 2009       04-20-2009, 8:18 AM Reply
so it seems like you guys have a ton of weight on one side...do you know if it will stay flat and float or if it will roll to one side? Just a thought
Old     (pc332)      Join Date: Jan 2007       04-20-2009, 9:57 AM Reply
Mike, Yea, we thought about that. If it does start to lean hard to one side, we have some extra barrels lying around that we thought we would strap to that one side to make it more boyant if we needed. It floated pretty even prior to us putting the advantech on the side, but we have considered that.
