Does anyone have experience with this board? I have been wanting to try a flex board and thought this looked like a pretty good deal. How does it compare to a slingshot? Also, what is the availability of these boards? Any info would be great.

to_blind 07-28-2008 5:15 PM

super cool board, kinda on the slow side, but you can leave the wake reallly tail heavy and pop it like a snowboard....spins easy enough, and its so big you should never miss a grab again. fun to butter in the flats and on the wake...i just ride it for "wind-down" sets so haven't done too many big spins or inverts on it
tons of flex, i can imagione it wouldl be great on rails, etc. and also very durable

rdhwk10 07-28-2008 8:32 PM

Where can I get one of these boards?

srh00z 07-28-2008 8:33 PM

I have seen them at the-house.com Props to Obrien for making a slider board with a slider warranty. I will pick one up when my gear budget allows.

rdhwk10 07-29-2008 6:39 AM

I'm really close to pulling the trigger on one of these if they are in stock. How heavy is the board?

to_blind 07-29-2008 8:39 AM

maybe a little heavier than a normal board, mind you, i have a 144 so thats warranted. its just so fun to play on, get one

rdhwk10 07-29-2008 8:42 AM

should be here thursday or friday...i got the 144 also pretty eager to try it out

to_blind 07-29-2008 8:51 AM

awesome choice, just remember to ride it really tail heavy and let it snap off the lip, its a cool feeling

rdhwk10 08-01-2008 5:34 PM

Got to ride the local tonight. It's the most fun board I have ever ridden. Buttering around and the pop off the wake are both awesome. The one question I have is does anyone notice the binding screws starting to loosen up with all of the flex in the board? Is there anything that can be done so that this doesn't happen or is it just me?

srh00z 08-01-2008 7:20 PM

I have seen a complaint about screws loosening up on the board, but I was thinking it was the fin screws.

rdhwk10 08-01-2008 8:27 PM

Yeah I heard that too but I didn't really check the fins. It may not be a problem for anyone else, I was just curious. I ride the 07 Shane bindings if that matters.

wakerider111 08-01-2008 8:50 PM

maybe 4 hole bolting would help the screws stay tight

rdhwk10 08-01-2008 9:02 PM

I figured someone would bring that up

wakerider111 08-01-2008 9:04 PM

hehe heheh... just don't hurt me for it. lol

but seriously. the fins on my slingshot come loose all the time (but that is more because they are fiberglass and strip, the hype metal ones are stayin put so far), but the boots... NEVER have had a problems and are nice and snug to the board like they are a part of it

(Message edited by wakerider111 on August 01, 2008)

(Message edited by wakerider111 on August 01, 2008)

LOST EVERYTHING ON THE LOCAL LAST NIGHT! EVERYTHING! after checking, re-tightening, and double-checking all screws, i lost the following in a very short time...

3 fins! (total of 5 this year)
2 binding screws (both inside screws, both had loc-tite on them as well...)

as much as i love this board, i can't get anything to stay on it, so I am sending it back to O'brien. Last night was only my fourth set on it...

do you think O'brien will address this problem?

team_o 08-07-2008 11:05 AM

Derek,

Please send it back to me. I want to see what's up & will take care of this for you.

I'll PM you with the details.

to_blind 08-07-2008 11:10 AM

Chris,

Thank you very much...I do really like this board, I just can't get anything to stay on it!

andy_nintzel 08-07-2008 11:49 AM

to_blind 08-07-2008 12:24 PM

jjakober 08-07-2008 12:58 PM

Here are some of mine:

to_blind 08-07-2008 1:23 PM

jakober, are those hyperlite p-wings on your board? and why is your board different then mine? i mean the tip and tail of yours is a totally different shape, i have a small cut-out like an obrien demented...maybe chris can answer these q's. anyways, nice pics man, you seem to enjoy that board as well

jjakober 08-07-2008 1:28 PM

I was wondering if anyone would notice

That’s the cool thing about the FLX line from O'Brien.

You can modify the shape and it won’t hurt the integrity of the board. I wanted the width of the 144 but not the length, so I cut it down and shaped the tips the way I wanted!

Now I have a Local 140, and it's sweet!

If you look in the first pic. you can see I am holding a camera and here is the vid to check out:

http://good-times.webshots.com/video/3064425790103314895OKSKGt

We were just playing around and obviously I need to aim better, but it's kinda cool.

jjakober 08-07-2008 1:29 PM

The fins are .7 pipe from an O'Brien Natural

to_blind 08-07-2008 1:38 PM

awesome. i am going to the shop for awhile, brb.
did you use a router?

jjakober 08-07-2008 1:48 PM

Nope, a skill saw, belt sander, and random orbital sander. The ends are no longer round like the sides, but if you used a router I'm sure you could round them over. I used the sanders to soften up the corners and smooth everything out.

bailey 08-08-2008 12:59 PM

Jakober are you riding that as your main board or are you still rocking the Natural. I was thinking about getting a local from Cliff but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

andy_nintzel 08-08-2008 1:28 PM

I ride my Local Like 70% of the time its just so fun!

jjakober 08-08-2008 1:43 PM

Robert,

I have been jumping between the Coda and the Natural. I ride the Local when I want to mix things up and do something different.

I know alot of people make the claim that Flex boards land softer then regular boards, but I have ridden both the Local and Slingshot and unless I landed on the tail the landings are definitely harder then a normal board. So for me, I can't see riding Flex as my primary board.

@ 38, my knees and back can only take so much!

(Message edited by jjakober on August 08, 2008)

bailey 08-08-2008 7:22 PM

I have ridden the slingshot and didn't really notice that it landed that soft. I have seen your knee braces so I imagine you are a good one to ask about soft landing boards. If you bring the local out to pateros maybe I can get a ride on it.

jjakober 08-08-2008 8:36 PM

For sure!! I am going to bring out a pile of boards for people to check out
