Zack, IMHO the Standard Rebel will do just fine. But don't get cheap on the lens. I bought a Canon 70-200L f/4 lens and it works great most of the time but it would of been nice to have the f/2.8
I shot these with the Rebel EOS.

Zack ~ I have the Rebel EOS as well and it does a good job. Walt is right with the lense. Try to get the best one you can. I got the cheaper ($200.00) 70-300mm F/4-4.5 USM III and it's good most of the time.

Walt ~ great pics as all ways. If you ever move up to the f/2.8L Let me know and I would be more than happy to take the f/4L off your hands

Ant, Some day I will buy the f/2.8 so I'll keep you in mind for sure.

Zack, Take a look at the Sigma's too they cost less.

Is this lense good?

http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&a mp;langId=-1&productId=29911&bct=%3Bc1022%3Bc914962

I'm not familiar with that lens but I think you can buy the Sigma 70-300 for around 200.00

Here's a great web site to research camera equipment.
http://www.dpreview.com/

If you're going to shoot a lot of wakeboarding you want a lens that has fast and accurate auto focus. That's usually what you don't get with less expensive glass. That quanterey may be capable of decent image quality but no shot will be good if it's out of focus. At least the Canon 75-300 has USM but even it's not known for having fast AF. Since the Rebel's AF system is marginal at best you need to help it out as much as possible. I'd get either the 70-200 f4L Canon or the Sigma 70-200 f2.8. either of these will give you the max potential from the Rebel focusing system.

Antbug,

A little curves and USM really helps those low contrast midday shots like you posted.

RD

a little curves??? I don't understand

richd 04-30-2005 7:24 AM

I applied a curves adjust layer in Photoshop.

I have the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM lens and on my 20D the focus is super fast. It can refocus between frames when shooting in a burst. I've used it a ton for my shots. You might want to try and pick up the 350D. You'll use the camera for years so don't be afraid to spend a few extra bucks if you can. Here are a couple I've taken with the combo.

The 20D AF is way faster then either of the Rebels. I agree with you that over the long haul an investment in a good lens is warranted. As far as bodies go with all the new ones coming out it's been tough for me to keep one even a year but I'm a complete gearhead! I took the liberty of playing around with your shot to see if I could recover some of the blown out white on the board, as you can see there's a little detail still there. Black wetsuit against a white board is going wreak havoc with the metering every time. RAW probably would have helped you to recover more of the whites. Nice shot - I like the colors in the background.

Did you play with the color saturation in that last photo Rich?
richd 05-24-2005 7:22 PM

Saturation command is more useful for desaturating individual colors then it is for enhancing overall color. If you have Photoshop experiment on a layer copy using either a levels adjustment layer or curves adjustment layer. You can vary the effect with different blending modes and layer opacity levels until you like what you're seeing. It's a great way to add a little POP to those midday shots like his.
