What tires are you running on your rigs?

Looking to get some new rubber under the truck.
Would like something that will do well in mud and sand yet not to loud rolling down the hwy.
What are you guys running?
The Nitto muds are a rockin off road tire but way to loud for me.

Size would be 33x12.5x20, maybe even 35s

chas 12-13-2010 12:17 AM

Bryon, how are you doing with your BFG's? How are they wearing?

jonyb 12-13-2010 12:35 AM

Lots of people like the Toyo Open Country M/T. I've had about 6-7 sets of them over the past few years and they all had a good tread life and weren't too loud. Never got them in the mud or sand, but they were pretty good in snow.

The new Nitto Trail Grapplers are decent too, from what Ive heard. Same tire as the Toyo though.

camassanger 12-13-2010 7:25 AM

Just put new Cooper Zeon LTZ on the Ram. Great looking tire but as quite as stock and made in USA

jonblarc7 12-13-2010 8:11 AM

I been running the Pro Comp Xtreme Mud terrain for the last two years in a 33 x 11.50 x 20. The tread has held up well and there not loud at all, my one complaint is the are harder to balance than the old Mud Grapplers i used to run.

Here is the only pic I can find of them right now.

I wish those were available in 22". I'm currently using 285/50/22 Nitto Terra Grapplers.

ilikebeaverandboats 12-13-2010 8:56 AM

The best tire would be a Toyo Open Country M/T
Quietest, longest lasting, all around best performing Mud Terrain tire out there....and also one of the most expensive. and they have sizes to fit just about everything.

I have nitto terra grapplers and they do ok, but wouldnt trust them too much in the mud. The new nitto trail grappler looks pretty trick tho, might check those out.

bawshogg 12-13-2010 9:03 AM

For an alternative to the Toyo mt's the Cooper STT are pretty nice also. They don't quite have all the sizes that they have in the Toyo's, but they have almost identical tread pattern and are usually quite a bit cheaper. I have a set and they have worn out great. 30k and I have more than half the tread life left, almost all the mileage is towing also. I will have to say next time around I most likely won't go with something as agressive. I like the Mickey Thompson ATZ's and those Zeon LTZ's are slick also, they just lack size selection. I want something quieter next time since most all my driving is street or highway anymore. I have noticed alot of guys running the new Generals with the red lettering and the Goodyear Duratracs also though.

guido 12-13-2010 10:07 AM

Dunlop Radial Rover M/T's. These tires have proven amazing in all conditions. I'm sure there are better straight mud tires out there, but for an aggressive tire that hits snow, ice, mud, rain and just plain highway driving you can't beat these. I'll buy another set, for sure. They also got a DOT rating for severe weather. I've tested that, and they pass with flying colors.

I've had Terra Grapplers, and while they're a great all around tire (including snow), they're not very aggressive. Probably not the best mud tire and they don't do it for me in the looks department.

I've heard great things about the Toyo's also, but can't personally comment.

davenk 12-13-2010 10:31 AM

I have Nitto Grappler LT295/70r17. I wanted 285's but I went up one size in width and the price went from $1200 to $800 for four. I am over 50,000 miles on them. I will probably need new ones in the next year. They work great towing and on sand at the beach. They were just ok in the snow, but they are also awfully wide for an F-150, maybe to wide for snow use, but I wanted them wide for the beach mainly. I am glad I got the "LT" instead of the "P" rating also, it helped with towing our boat - 5,000 lbs. + and maybe lasting 50,000+ miles. The bigger size then stock did put a damper on the towing effort though. I would buy another set.

RedRum 12-13-2010 10:59 AM

I have 37" BFG M/T KM on one truck with 42,000 and still at least 1/4 of tread left. My other truck has 35" Toyo Open Country M/T that are a couple of months old. The Toyos are definitely louder than the BFGs, but the Toyos are a much better mud tire in the muck. I haven't had the chance to try the new style BFG KM2. You can't get the old style BFG except for in one size anymore IIRC.

RedRum 12-13-2010 11:00 AM

Another plus for the 37" Toyo M/T is that it is an E rated tire for those of us that run diesels and actually use our trucks to haul stuff. Most 35 and 37" tires are usually only D rated

chas 12-13-2010 11:28 AM

I like the look of the Toyo but they are a lil on the high side dollar wise.. The Coopers are a lil cheaper and have heard a lot of good things about them. Going to try and go check out the Dunlops, they look pretty cool in the pics on line. Tirerack has them for a steal right now.

The Cooper STT carry an E rating also.

I'm on my second set of Toyo MT's (2 different rigs) and will get another set when these wear out. Expensive, but worth the green.

big_poppa_pump 12-13-2010 12:10 PM

I have 35x12.50R18 Toyo Open Country MTs on my Superduty. They are fairly quiet for how agressive they are and I like the sidewall tread. Mileage is so-so, I think I got about 35K out of them but the fronts were worn bald.

For quietest and longest mileage mud tire I don't think you can beat a BFG Mud T/A. I like their all terrains also.

My superduty is no longer a daily driver so tread life isn't as much of an issue for me now.

guido 12-13-2010 12:16 PM

Dunlops are also E-rated.

Walt 12-13-2010 2:35 PM

I'm running Cooper Zeon LTZ's. Great tire so far.

 Not according to Cooper's website. 33, 35, and 37 STT are D rated

While we're on this subject, my partner has a brand new set of 6-lug GM Fuel Hostage chrome 20X12's wrapped in 33X12.50 Nitto Trail Grapplers for sale, and they're cheap. They've never been mounted, he's already moving up to 22X14's so these have to go.

I know this isn't the classified's, but we all seem to be on the subject of the wheels/tires here.

$2400 picked up in WEstern KY....

Kumho Roadventure MT's - I love mine (37X13.50x20), 25k miles, more affordable then most, and not everybody on earth has em.

I'm running the same Kumho as TQ....very happy. Granted, mine is a freeway flyer, but the Kumhos are very quite, no rumble after about 7-8 mph, and I have 42K on a set on my F250. They are all done though, and need replaced. I'll go with another set of these. Good looking tire, as well.

Mine doesn't see really any off-road either, I have friends with built crawlers that run them and love em too. I am waiting to see how the new Nitto Trail Grappler does - I have two friends running them on lifted F350's - we'll see how they do up against the Kumho.

Nitto's 325/50-22. I have had excellent wear so far!! I've had them in the past in other sizes and they seem to be a good tire.

chattwake 12-16-2010 11:08 AM

Mickey Thompson ATZ 35x12.50r20 on my rig.

domin8 12-16-2010 5:37 PM

Really like these over my previous set of Terra Grapplers in same size. Less road noise and much better appeearance IMHO. Tread life TBD. Better snow and sand/dirt performance so far in medium situations.
