Scene around Merritt Island FL

Hey Guys,

I'm currently interviewing for a position in Merritt Island and wanted to get some info on the area. If offered I would more than likely take it because it's a great opportunity and I could board year round, but I would love it even more if I could find a spot on a lake so I could board weeknights. From google I see Lake Poinsett is easily within daily driving distance but didn't know if it was realistic to ride there (depth/gators)? Any and all info is appreciated!

I live nearby in Satellite Beach but don't know anything about that lake. The Banana and Indian River get good from time to time. This last summer had a ton of glassy days. Other than that, we will drive out to C54 if we really want good conditions. Picture below is C54

Wow, that canal looks like it would be FULL of alligators???

All fresh water and some brackish in Florida has gators and snakes. Unless you have a private lake and have had them removed they are there with you. If you are afraid of the wildlife you will never ride in Florida.

I don't have a problem with alligators, this is the sign as I was pulling my boat out of the water for the week. The second pick is putting the boat in at the public dock.
On a tangent, since we are talking about Cocoa Beach area, I would be interested in doing some pull in surfing on small 3-5 ft waves with anyone who is interested in the area.

Definitely not saying there aren't alligators out there but surprisingly we don't see many. There is a big retention pond at the far end of the canal to the west where you will see lots of them but the boat ramp is pretty far away from that area.

Cas Marks, Where do the dolphins hang out around Cocoa? I have been riding up in Jacksonville and down by Fort Myers where there have been dolphins in the Intercoastal waterway, right by an Inlet. would there be dolphins around Cape Canaveral where the cruise ships dock?

I'll let you in on a big secret. Those alligator signs are posted by the locals to keep you out of their choice riding spots.

Can you spot the gator, or are you just going to pretend they are not there?

Jim, congratulations on the job, it is a beautiful area out there!

that C54 looks like a barefooters paradise...might even be close to the length of my secret barefoot canal in Calif.
