Mixing speaker sizes

I bought a boat that currently has a set of 6x9 speakers installed in it. Has just one set in the cockpit so I need to add more.

The 6x9s are mounted cut into the bolster so I'm stuck with them. Is it a problem mixing 6x9's and 6 1/2"'s? I am going to replace them so all speakers would be the same series from the same brand, but is the size difference going to affect sound?

No issue.

Food for thought. its real close, but an 8" speaker like the Wet Sounds Revo-8 will just cover the cutout of a typical 6x9.

The answer depends. With equal power, the speaker with greater surface area typically has more output than the smaller speaker. If the smaller speaker has the positional advantage then this might balance out nicely.

So then the next question is am I better off adding more 6x9's or adding 6 1/2's?

This is in my 39 foot Cruiser. In a large cockpit. Very high gunnels say higher yet than a G23. Probably 12 wide and 14-16' front to back. I was going to add 2 sets of 6 1/2's to go with the existing pair of 6x9's. Then a pair of 12" subs in a ported enclosure. Am I better off adding 2 sets of 6x9's?

Two things I dont see coming back into style yet they can still be found, are Mullets and marine 6x9 speakers. I would not want to cut more 6x9 holes.

Can you take out the 6x9s & cut some 8s in? If you're redoing your whole stereo and adding more speakers you might as well. 🤷🏼*♂️
