DIY Garage Board Racks
 

Just thought I'd throw this up for the DIY section. Props to Hunter660 for the idea. I have limited space in my garage since I park 2 cars in there also so I needed something low profile that would hold all of mine and my GF's boards. You can add the black foam if you want padding but I'm pretty sure setting them on PVC isn't going to hurt my boards.

*Measurements are for pipe cuts only and do not include fittings.

David - I think it was around $38 total including $9 for the PVC primer and cement I had to buy since I didn't have any. Used all 1" PVC too.

Jarrod- I really like the looks of yours too but with so many spare boards I needed to be able to stack a few together behind each one with bindings.

Derek- I was thinking of those hooks originally but I didn't have a lot real estate to spare and 2 hooks per board x 13 boards = my entire garage wall.

Why we need 13 boards between my GF and I I'm still trying to figure out....

Yeah I wouldn't have gone the route I did if I had more boards. The angles were a pain in the ass to try and keep equal. Mainly did it bc I wanted to get out of the house haha

I just built a rack for my storage unit. The rack is built high, with the first set of bars @ 52", so I can put the boards right in the rack from the boat.

Shawndoggy, where did you get the foam for around those holders?

Home Depot pipe insulation... in the plumbing dept.

pic on our dock used for day storage. 2x4's with wood dowel placed into bored out holes, then PVC placed over and done.

Be careful with the hook thing. I've used those for a few years until last year when I had the garage door open and a freak wind gust kicked up and blew my $700 wakesurf board off of the hooks right onto the concrete floor. Shattered the corner of the board. I wasn't too happy about the hook solution that day.

Think I just found my weekend project. Those look great and I have trying to find somewhere to store my wake and snowboards!

What I really like about Ryan's rack is the fact that you can tuck any boards without binding in behind a board with bindings. Very cool. I think I'm going to do a version of that one for my garage.

That's the rack that I have been thinking about since I found the thread. Think I am going to do the same one. I am wondering how it is mounted to the wall though. Not sure if he put screws directly through the pvc into the wall or used something else.

I used yarns design and measurements, fairly simple. Only difference is I measured the width of the rack to the studs in the wall, and then drilled the rack directly into the wall. Works great.

I've been using the Lowe's Bicycle racks, and I don't think any DIY job looks better. They are about $13 a rack, they bolt into a stud on the wall with two included screws. They have padded fingers which protect the edges of the boards, and they fold upwards when you take the boards off of them. They also project the edge of the board a little further from the wall, so there is a more stable angle regarding the boards resting against the wall. This is a little more important in California (earthquake country).

The little hooks are about a dollar I used for the ropes and are also from Lowe's.

I have some of those too and they are nice. However, you're limited on the number of boards since you can only do one per rack. That's what I like about Ryan's design. I need to hang about 12 boards and I don't have room for two rows of racks. They sure look nice though. If I was hanging in a bedroom, I'd definitely go with those.

I bought some racks on storeyourboard.com and although they aren't DIY, I figured they were worth posting. I love them for storage in my room (I take pride in showing my gear off:D) and the only downside is I can only store one at a time. They take two screws into the stud and you're good to go! Phone pics though, sorry.

This is what I did after getting the idea from someone else and it worked awesome. Up against the ceiling of the garage and out of the way. Best of all, CHEAP!!

Hey Jim- Yes I attached mine by drilling holes through the PVC and screwing them to the studs.

Steve! Thats a Liquid Force 143 from like 2001 or so! That made me smile and brought back memories. Props to rocking that old reliable board!

Yup, that takes it as far as board racks go.

You will even notice the security camera in the top left corner to make sure no one jacks our boards (that's what I do for a living).

Just put some up at the shop. Home Depot Special. about $5 each...works great!

Ryan, I'm curious about that 37" width. Studs are usually 16" or 24" apart. Are your studs 20" apart or are you not mounting your rack to studs?

I dont use studs for anything n my garage (heavy duty shelves, wakeboard racks, 13' paddleboard etc)...just use heavy duty wall anchors. Now i think about it, both my flat screens 46" & 52" arent stud mounte either:) in my house

You have TV's hanging in drywall? You're a brave man!

Yep...theyre like 75lb wall anchors x 4. If i hung them in the studs the damn tv would be off center lol

anchor screws are alright for boards, but your big ol flat screens?? I guess if they fall gives you a good excuse to buy a newer bigger one :)

Your right Dave. On one side they are screwed to the studs and on the other I just put a few wall anchors in. They are also screwed to the studs in the cross bars.

Your crazy. I actually climbed down into wall above my fireplace so I could put new centered studs in to hang my flatscreen over the mantel. Thankfully there was a small void space and I'm skinny haha.

I've got another fun DIY coming next week If I can finish it. It's a super loud portable radio to play your Iphones or MP3 player through. Speakers, battery and amp all in an old metal 5 gallon gas can.

Worked the last 3-4 yrs on all of them lol. Even in my brand new house I had the predrywall pics to go off of, but the tv would have been way off center so I said screw it:) if it falls it falls.

I decided to use Joe B's idea with the storage racks from Home Depot. They seem strong and mount easily. They also fold up when not being used - cool feature!

My only concern is that I live in a new development and we don't have many trees to block the wind. It gets pretty windy, I am hoping the boards don't get 'blown' off the racks. Otherwise, I will give the 6x9 'board rack' a shot.

I think these racks give a clean look.

Where are all your bindings?? Lol

^^^Definitely one of the cleaner looks! Run a bungie cord from the top rack to the bottom rack if you're concerned about wind. Kind of kills the look and won't protect the top board, but it might help.

Below is what I did this weekend. I'm going to put together an article with the details. It's obviously based on the rack that started this thread, but I tweaked it a bit. My favorite tweak was to use threaded fittings for some of the racks so that I can bend them out of the way when putting the board in. Not only does it make it easier, but it also allows you to squeeze in more boards. I only used the threaded fitting on two of my six racks, but if I had to do it again, I'd probably make them all threaded.

Did this project the other week. Took me a while to figure out the first one on the right. After I put up that one the rack filled up fast! So the next day I built another one! less than two hours to build the second one and I also tweaked the design a bit the second time around. Added 2 inches to the length of each rack to accommodate the board bags. Then slanted in the higher rack in to handle the short length of my wake skates.
I also recommend to anyone doing this to make sure you buy PVC 40 and not 200. the 40 is much more study. In the end the cost per rack was $45. Love them!

I recently built the house and had all my boards in a storage unit (among a ton of other stuff) The boards 'stored' more easily without the bindings, so I removed them. It's still cold here in Ohio and we have not been out yet ......I haven't gotten around to mounting them. It does look a little weird.

The PVC set ups are legit. Probably a more sturdy rack system...

Man you guys have some time wrapped up in these, I will have to snap a pic of mine when I get to the lake. All I did was take a 2x4 turn it on its side (2" side) and drill 5/8" holes at an angle and slip a piece of copper in it, then a piece of insulation over that. $20 at Depot and 20 minutes to make and screw to the wall.

I finally installed these this past weekend. They worked out well and installed in less than 10min. I need to get another set.

Sorry for the delay. A guy blatantly posted these racks a couple weeks ago, advertising them on this thread. I saw them and bought them, then his posts were deleted.

I am in no way affiliated with them. It took me a couple weeks to get around to install them. They were simple and worked out well.

My first attempt was with PVC. It worked ok for the first few boards. Eventually I was needing something better and to be able to store more boards. BOOM!! :D

Wow, that's a lot of boards...

Not to hijack but between the post with "the boardroom," which I thought was pretty cool, and this one, what's up with holding onto so many boards. I've had great success selling each of my old boards for upgrades on Craigslist and other sites, I'm kind of surprised to see these many boards up there.

Here are the racks that i made up...Didn't like hanging my knee braces off the board rack so i mad a shelf to hang knee braces, ropes, wet life vests...etc....

If I try to make a pvc rack like the ones above, what size pvc should I use?

Bad picture but I just built 2 of the pvc ones as well. The only difference is that I didnt use any glue so everything is removable and adjustable

Of course the picture had to come out sideways. Just flip your computer or something.
