2014 GMC Sierra

I am considering moving to a 2014 GMC Sierra - likely the Denali package. Anyone have any feedback on this truck? It would be a daily driver for me as well as all duties associated with pulling my x-star.

Pros/Cons?

Are you wanting a 1500 or 2500? I bought at 2014 GMC 1500 in October of last year and just traded it in last month with over 35000 miles on it. I loved the truck, it was extremely comfortable and quiet, and although I didn't tow much, I did pull some pallets of grass (about 6000lbs) a couple of times and it handled them great. Now I have a 2015 GMC 2500 that I tow about 15000-20000 with daily and I feel the same about it, I love it. I haven't had any trouble out of either one and I'm not very easy on my vehicles.

As Kane ssaid..... 1500 gasser or 2500 diesel?
Either way both are extremely nice if you go with the Denali. If you do the 1500 the Denali comes with a 6.2L motor as well, so much better towing power on the gas side than the regular 5.3L motor that is stock in the 1500

Sorry....my bad......1500 gasser.

I went back on fourth on the 1500 All Terrain edition and the Denali. I liked the All Terrain better based on price and the rims included in the package. In the end we went with a 2500 HD Chevy Duramax LTZ for a few grand more. Best option is the AC seats. Not 100% sold on the Mylink interface, seems slow at times.

I got a 2014 like 3 months ago coming from a 2011 Yukon. Good power from the 5.3, tows decent, very quiet cabin and it is extremely comfortable. Also probably the best looking truck Imo. Defenetly worth a test drive.

Love my 214 Sierra slt. New 5.3 pulls as good as my previous 6.2 did.

I have a 2011 GMC 1500 4x4 and the truck has been solid. It's just about to click 100K miles. I drive the **** out of it and tow a lot. It's never stranded me.

This is great feedback. I am surprised by the love for the 5.3. I had a 5.3 in my 2001 Tahoe - I know that was a long time ago - but it was under-powered for pulling a 21' wake boat. You guys have no power problems with the 5.3?

Jwredmon101 08-12-2014 2:52 PM

The 5.3 in the 14 models is not the same motor as in previous years.. ALOT has been changed and improved. Makes more torque and HP as well as a 6 speed tranny makes a huge difference on towing.Im a Sales Consultant for a GM dealer in KY .. I was told the parts on this new motor that will retro fit to the 13 year model 5.3 can fit all in one of your hands!

nitrousbird 08-12-2014 8:09 PM

I love the new Sierras. GM made a huge mistake leaving the 5.3L as that displacement. People will continue to think it is the same old 5.3L. Should have made changes to make it a 5.2, 5.4 or gave it some "jazzy" name just to make consumers aware that it is a very different and improved motor.

Also, the Denali 1500 can be had with the 5.3L...6.2L is an option and one that is still worth the money IMO.

Thanks guys. What is the real world MPG on the 5.3?

Brendon444 08-13-2014 8:13 AM

I own a 2014 sierra denali with the 5.3 and previous was 2009 sierra denali 6.2. The 14 is night and day difference interior quality and quietness of the cab way better. The 6.2 had a lot more noticeable power and pulled better which was expected as I wanted better mileage. My 5.3 over the life time has averaged 14.0 l/100km , and on the highway seems to get 10.5-11.5 l/100km.

Brendon444 08-13-2014 8:18 AM

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Real World mileage. I would image in the states the mileage would be slightly improved also with better conditions + roads. Live in northern Canada.

14.0 L/100 = 16.8 mpg US. My lifetime average
10.5-11.5 = 22.4-20.5 mpg US. Highway mileage every time, not just a once best.
My truck has 25,000 km.

Have the 2014 Sierra SLT. Denali was not available when I bought mine but I have never even wished I had one. The 5.3 pulls great and I get 17-19 in the city everytime and 20-24 on the highway everytime. Truck is fantastic very quiet, good stereo, intellilink interface is good, not great, but gets the job done, interior space is exceptional. Few must-haves are: A/C seats, 3.42 rear diff, and if you get the 2WD like I did, you need to go ahead and install a 2inch level. With the 3.42 I tow my 230 with ease everywhere. You will not be dissapointed with this truck. I also installed a carpet bed-liner and a hard tri-folding bed cover which has been fantastic.

I rented 6 new 1500 Silverados last winter for my project on Alaksas north slope.
So pretty much torture tested them in the harshest conditions possible.
Pluses:
Most comfortable on shatty bumpy ice roads compared to the rest of the fleet. I had about 40 trucks of all makes and models on the job.
The Bluetooth hookup whatever you call it was great, worked well.
They tow well for a half ton. All low speed driving on ice roads but the 1500s towed some big compressors with ease.

The bad:
4 of them were flawless. 1 had recurring. No start problems, snow injestion somewhere becAuse it would not start after a blizzard but would be fine after completely thawing out. All of them started and ran fine at -40F but they are outfitted with multiple heaters and on board charger when you plug them in.
1 was just a lemon. Always had electrical problems. EPS went out. Sensors etc. it was a pile.

Hope this helps. Based on my experience I'd buy one. They didn't have any more issues in that environment than the others.

I am going to hijack here a little. I have always been a Chevy guy. My last truck was an 05' Duramax CC. It was a great truck and was problem free for 200,000 miles.
I just bought a 14' Ram EcoDiesel. I feel the Chrysler's interiors are heads and tails better than anyone else. The 7" uconnect it fast and works great. Best of all I have almost 8,000 miles and average 24 mixed 50/50 driving, I got 30mpg on a 800 mile trip and got 18.3 towing my boat on a 1200 mile round trip.

2001Sunsport 08-24-2014 1:13 PM

Not sure if you bought a truck yet, but I bought a '14 Z71 Silverado with the 3.42 rear axle, 4x4 and 5.3L. Towed my 2001 Sunsport (approx 4400 lbs with tandem axle trailer) and all our camping gear 700 miles this summer and averaged about 13.5-14mpg at 60-65mph. Unloaded I've been getting 23+mpg on the highway. The new 5.3 likes to stay in 4 cylinder mode once you're up to speed.

I've had mine for 12 months now and it's the best truck I've owned. I'm coming from a 2011 1500 GMC. The interior is suuuuper quiet and comfortable. IMO it's one of the best looking trucks on the market. Plenty of power for just about anything you need. Mine is pretty loaded with options but I use all of them regularly. I have just over 22,000 miles so far and I've averaged 17.8 miles/gal and I drive 75 on the freeway. I haven't had any issues with it aside from a recall that was really not big deal. Get one, you'll love it.
