You are incorrect about the GM truck updates. The GMT800 trucks were from '98 through '06, and had an interior/exterior update in '03. The GMT900 trucks came out in '07 and are totally different. Next GM truck update due as a '14 model.

Paul, that pick with the lake in the background could be in a Ford Commercial- That is a great pic!

it looked the same to me. I am not trying to get into the Ford/ Chevy argument. I have owned both and liked them all. All I am saying is that when I looked at the choices, the ecoboost made the most sense.

Yeah... those look virtually identical. :p

timmyb 09-24-2012 10:49 AM

There are 2 interiors in the Silverado's starting in 2007.5. The one pictured is what they call the "work truck" dash. The other silverado dash is the same as a Tahoe and sits lower and has a sleeker look to it.

bandsecurity 09-24-2012 7:04 PM

the model I was shown must have had work truck interior because it was virtually the same as my 2004. Its great that Nirousbird has focused one small detail in my decision making process. Keep hammering on the interior and forget about price, zero financing, power, torque, gas mileage and towing ability. Brilliant strategy Perry Mason.

wakebordr11 09-24-2012 7:17 PM

Chillax man I'm sure he's just breaking balls. Like we said you're incorrect about when the interior/ext changed, you said not since 04, that's wrong lol. Maybe you looked at a 'classic' version truck? Either way, I know why you chose Ford, I would too if I was in the market for a new pickup, they're really nice. Was the Ford eco similar priced to the silverado 1500?

bandsecurity 09-24-2012 7:45 PM

i was not really looking at the silverados so I cant say. I had owned 3 of them and liked them but wanted more interior room or power, so it was between the tundra or the duramax. happened to walk across the street and see the ecoobost and the decision was made.

timmyb 09-24-2012 8:18 PM

Well, there were 2 '07 models, you could get the Silverado Classic which was the same truck as the '06 (and the dash was almost identical to the '04) and then they had the new body style. I'm not saying any truck is better than another, just letting you know the details.

I had a F150 Limited 2011 with the 6.2 liter engine. I could pull a steep hill at 70 no problem. MPG was 14.5 and it was a great truck. One big problem was I was on my 4th set of tires at 60k miles. The rubber was so soft on the tires I could not make them last past 15k so I traded it in on a Ecoboost. WOW. This truck is as fast as my Limited and the MPG is 18 after 1500 miles. Doubt I will pull the hill at 70 but I won’t get a ticket doing it either. Great truck.....

surffresh 10-08-2012 5:21 PM

oh yeah it will, I pull through the Smokies in NC and TN all the time @70 going up

get_sum 10-08-2012 5:48 PM

What rear end are you Ecoboosters running? I'm looking to trade out of my 2009 GMC Sierra with the 5.3L and the 3.42 gears.

stevev210 10-08-2012 6:12 PM

3.55's....its pulls my 06 xstar with zero problems and that boats dry weight is 4250lbs

get_sum 10-08-2012 7:02 PM

Thanks Steve. Has anyone pulled with the 3.15s yet?

pprior 10-09-2012 6:29 AM

I've got 3.73s on mine, because that is the only thing you can get with max tow package, at least for 2012, not sure about 2013. Without max tow, if you get a screw you are pretty low on capacity if you fill your cab with people.

retoxtony 10-09-2012 12:01 PM

I'm also running 3.73s in my 2011 ecoboost. kind of wish i had went with the 3.55 rear end. People keep telling me how little the difference is for towing, but maybe my unloaded MPG would be a bit better.

Just want to add that my eco is now on its 4th set of clutch packs in my rear diff and needs to go in again as they are chattering as of yesterday. This time they lasted almost 4000km. Pretty sure i got stuck with a lemon.

I put an edge programer on my 2011 ecoboost. I'm seeing about a 1 mpg gain on my overall average. (roughly 17 mpg city driving).

I got around 21 mpg on average this summer when I was driving the highway 40 miles everyday for work.

get_sum 10-19-2012 5:46 AM

Towed with my super crew caib FX2 2012 ecoboost. It has the 3.15 gears. I was a little worried about the ratio , but I put it into tow haul and locked out 6th gear. It pulled my 2010 Axis A22 with a full gas tank easily up to 70. Good thing is that when I'm not towing, it bumbles around at 1700 rpm at 75 mph.

i just turned 42k on my 2011 screw w 3.73's i am averaging about 17 mpg city and 20 hi way. i try and stay under 75 and its good. we are just moving this week to sc from pgh, but here in the burgh we tow to WV up the summit 3800ft and we can crank 70 with a full crew and all the gear, beer ,etc etc pulling a new 244. i think this is the best package you can get in a truck without buying a diesel and loosing the better ride of the 1/2 ton.

I have had some noise and clunking around 35k. i will check the limited slip and see if thats it. its not back lash, but every once in a while you can feel the bump and hear a little clunk.

dougr 10-19-2012 6:20 AM

oh, what tires are you guys moving towards, i need a set. i am about 3 32nds and am looking at the mich ltx lt truck or another set of these pirrellis.

How does it tow and more importantly, how is the turning radius?

I went to BF Goodrich All terrains on my second set of tires, mainly because I have always been able to get a lot of miles out of them, they are good when I am out at the farm from getting puntcures and they are great riding tire. A little pricey but they are right in line with the Michelins. Those michelins are also great tires I have had those before and put 100k on a set.

Probably a 6 point U turn in that driveway of yours...

I was behind one in my Avalanche on Sunday. He tried to make a U turn in front of me and had to stop and back up. My Avalanche made the U turn with about 10' to spare.

Do you still have the Dodge?

Ford has really stepped up. I rent cars about 2x per month and find myself opting for Fords when I can. The Taurus Limited is my business rental of choice these days. We rented an Explorer for a week in Canada over the summer, it was very comfortable and quiet. I have owned more Chevys than Fords but the General is behind Ford for the past 2-3 years.

bandsecurity 10-30-2012 7:44 PM

My F150 turns better than my Silverado did. The F150 is comparable to the Tundra as far as turn radius

airzemee 10-31-2012 10:16 AM

ya it was the appearance package deal that got me that killer interior.. Im a big fan of it too.. I also love how the red emblems on the side of my truck just pop out with the rest of the truck being dark.. only thing I myself wonder is if I could have gotten a 3.25 or whatever lower rear end. All of my kms are highway and via the onscreen display mpg at 120km/hr isnt spectacular, i mean its good for the power but not the 30 mpg i heard about with the ecoboost.. But then I slow down to 90 kms/hr and all the sudden my truck is running mid 30s mpg,

One other issue ive been having, wondering if any of you other guys with eb are having it.. but when I go to pass someone on the highway and i put the hammer down the truck will downshift to 3rd and rev up like it made the shift but then sit there studdering and not accelerating at all.. this is very rare occurance, but its happened to me probably 7 times now? It will do it for a few minutes as i step on it and let off of it.. then all the sudden the truck works flawlessly and throws me back into the seat like warp speed! lol. Getting this to happen with a tech in the truck is going to be impossible, and they scan it and say it works. anyone else have any info or issues?

No, the 3:73 is the standard rear end in the FX4 package with the 4:10 as an option.

You're using both KM and MILESPG here so I'm going to assume the 30MPG is really Km. The best fuel economy is going to be realized at 60-65 MPH so whatever that translates to for you.

yeah, i know the 3.73 is standard, thats the only gripe ive had rather than my other issue. and its not even the 3.73 thats a issue, im just curious how much better my mileage would be with the lower gears haha. I switched between the mpg and km/hr because i know most people on here know mpg ratings better.
But i know that when i go 90 kms a hr the screen says im using 8 liters/100kms, whereas i go up to 110 kms/ and its up around 14.5-15.0 liters/100 kms..

Hate any input on my other issue? have you heard about it? ove these trucks regardless

LD50 10-31-2012 7:42 PM

There's plenty of info out there about the ecoboost "shudder" under the exact conditions you described. Evidently, if you're in the right climate and spend a significant time cruising at interstate speed the intercooler does its job a little too well causing excess condensation. When you punch it, it takes a couple of seconds to clear itself out.

I also have a 2012 ecoboost super cab and by the way it tows just as good if not better than my 2008 f250 diesel and costs way less at the pump and its only a bonus that I pull on my buddies 98 cobra until 80mph when he flies by.

Some what related, if you are thinking of upgrading your headlight and grill, don't do the ebay special raptor look a like. The projection lights suck, one of my lenses already melted, the seller will not stand behind the product and dragged me out past the 30 days, saying he didn't receive pics of the damage. The grill is garbage too and is already delaminating. The only thing working correctly now are the LED tail lights. Just an FYI. Stay stock or OEM.

I Now have 18k miles on the truck and although I still love it the transition shifts hard and the engine idles rough. Time to take it in.

This statement has me thinking... I'm in the market for a Super Duty truck. But now I'm wondering if a Ecoboost might be better. Here's the catch... I need 6 passenger capability. Can you get that in an F-150 that is still nicely appointed (leather, nav, etc.)?

Hate, how would the Ecoboost do on a trip to Shasta with 2 adults, 4 kids, gear in the bed, and a VLX in tow? It's the big hills I'm thinking about (Siskiyou Pass, etc.). My Denali XL slows down a bit on those hills (not as bad as my '08 Suburban did), and the tranny can get hot (e.g. 225 degrees). I was thinking I needed a Super Duty to solve these issues (currently looking at both 6.4's and 6.7's). But if an Ecoboost can do the trick then I'd rather have that (since this truck would also be my daily driver).

These aren't exactly that type of conditions I can replicate in a test drive. ;)

Rough country makes some bolt on spacers for leveling. Thats what i used. Really easy install and havent had any issues.

dougr 11-07-2012 7:01 PM

ixfe, you will be impressed with the ecoboost. i would never by a super duty unless it was not for towing and you needed it bed load. The eco rocks, i would never had believed it without owning one. you will love it. i put 5 big guys, all our gear and crank up hills for 0 to aprox 3k elevation without it blinking with an enzo 244. so the 244 with a trailer is 7k plus. just see if you can get your dealer to let you hook up your boat. good luck

edge04 11-19-2012 12:16 PM

do the ecoboost have more/better towing than the Raptor?

epicism 11-19-2012 12:45 PM

@ IXFE I've had my truck fully loaded down bed and 23ft epic boat loaded as well with camping stuff and a full tank of gas, got 13mpg and climbed hills passing folks not towing anything. Never once did I loose power or get smells of a hot engine while driving in 108 degree heat through redding and shasta areas. I will never buy another ford diesel, i did the same thing in my 08 f250 and got an average of 8mpg. Only downside is the boat drives you a little, meaning pulls the truck on rolled shoulders unlike my f250. As for the size, the crew cab was the same size as my crew f250, lots of space. The only thing Ill add is a set of airbags to stiffen up the suspension while towing the boat. Good luck with your decision. Did I mention it runs on 87 no need for a higher grade, says so right in the manual.

04outback 11-23-2012 3:41 PM

FINALLY TOWED with it.
Hit 1000 miles this week and had a chance to tow my boat for a Black Friday.

FIRST, quite pleased with the towing! It towed much better than my Silverado! slow speeds, highway. starting from a stop pulling onto the highway...all better. mileage still a little low, but still breaking in..

Quite pleased with the change!

If you go new for new there is no way the 420 torque rating on the ecoboost can hang with the 800 torque rating on the power stroke, period! Shasta is a great example of this.
My tow rig (not an ecoboost) has 410 torque. Most of the time it pulls great, can't complain, heck I can hang with the diesel trucks over Mt. Hood. Then we go to Shasta, that's a real climb! They smoke me, no comparison what so ever. They have double the torque! Although some are running 6.0psd's and 6.4 psd's so it's not just the 6.7psd that owns my gasser.
I do beat them on mileage. They are only getting 8 loaded with big wakeboats and 37" tires on the Shasta trip. But who cares about fuel costs when you can blow over the Siskiyou pass like its nothing.
For those that think they've towed hills in the ecoboost, this is one of the steepest grades in the interstate highway system, it will bring you back to reality that it simply doesn't produce the torque of today's diesel trucks. I'm very impressed that it is a little better then my vortec big block, with excellent gas mileage!

ixfe 11-24-2012 12:22 PM

Thanks for the response. It pretty much confirms what I suspected.

At any rate, I can't wrestle our Denali XL away from my wife, so it looks like no new tow rig for us.

Your naturally aspirated Vortec loses power at elevation, boosted engines are mostly immune to power loss at elevation. Not really a valid comparison as you're not maintaing that 410 ft lbs when the air gets thin, the EB and the diesel's will and do it at a much lower engine speed.

You're right the EB will not match the modern diesels power but it comparable to oil burners of say 10 years ago....which is generally more than enough for wake boats, even on a decent grade.

epicism 11-25-2012 10:18 AM

@Gotmods I agree with what your saying and no Ive never climbed a hill like that. I will tell you that I owned both a 08 6.4L f250 and now own a EB and would never buy another ford diesel. The 6.4L had a lot of power but for what I use it for (towing a boat, dirt bikes, and camping) there is no reason for me to have a diesel. For the hills I tow the, EB pulls the same and doesn't jar your back along the way, doesn't coast an arm and a leg in gas, is cheaper on insurance and reg, and while at idle its so quiet that I forget it is on. @dooski right on didn't even think about that... Additionally if you are able to keep your foot out of it and be the slowest driver on the freeway and can keep it at 55, I got 26.4 mpg on a drive from san jose to lake trinity and back (two passengers, no gear, 2011 EB super cab). that was with a calc not the dash fuel economy display.

Gotmods 11-25-2012 11:20 AM

I completely agree this is an awesome upgrade for anyone who wants to stick with gas and doesn't need or want a 3/4 ton or bigger diesel truck. Great point about the turbo engine being less affected by altitude. The summit of the pass is just over 4,000 ft so I am losing almost 50ft/lbs torque if the formula for HP loss at altitude is the same as torque. At 1000 feet I'm only losing 13. We start at sea level and spend very little time at 4k. There are things affecting the EB at higher altitudes as well, such as more heat and a less effective inter cooler. Again it is much less then the affects on my NA gasser. In places like Colorado it makes even more sense to go the turbo route.

The mileage is awesome, with all the pros to this engine it's no wonder the big blocks are a dying (dead) breed. We learned early that efficiency always made more power and the technology put into the EB fortifies that statement.

With all this said I feel it is much better to compare my big block to the EB then an EB to a PSD, if that 50 loss in torque takes me out of the league of an EB at 4,000ft.(and the EB also loses a little) how do they both stack up against the 800 in the PSD? They simply do not.

Gotmods 11-25-2012 11:47 AM

Should add: the EB is doing this at 3.5 liters vs. my 7.4l!
Also my 2500 with 1 ton running gear is rated to tow 8,600 while the new 150 with EB is 11,300!
Yes it's a game changer!

edge04 11-26-2012 10:53 AM

I just put 1000 miles on my 2013 Raptor. So far I'm happy. If you look at the torque ratings between the ecoboost and 6.2 litre in the Raptor they are close and over 400. The ecoboost develops it torque down low in the RPM range so in theory is should tow better however if all your towing is a 5000# or less wakeboat your splitting hairs or need a big diesel.

Wonder why he test drove a 6.7 PSD the other day?

I don't have an ecoboost, but here is my 2010 Ford F-150 FX4 with the 5.4L and 6 speed transmission. I have added quite a few things to my truck! It pulls my 1996 nautique super sport great!

So probably close to 8000lbs on the trailer with fuel... Big ass boat. I drive a fx4 ecoboost and we haul a dumping trailer, 2200lbs empty, and sometimes ill fill it with 6-7000 lbs of scrap drywall and concrete etc... No way I would tow a 130k boat that weighs 8k lbs with a ecoboost 3-4 times a week... And I love my ecoboost

i just turned 46k on my 2011 ecoboost fx4. 4x4 screw 3.73 gears. i have had it for 13 months. Its been great. i am averaging about 21 on hi way 18 on city stop and go. i dont drive a lot of city, just get on the hiway and go. my trip averages around 19.2. I have towed my 244 enzo (set 7500)lbs with trailer and gears. stereo etc etc. from pgh pa to atlanta ga. 14 mpg average and a steady 70 mph no a blink from the truck. I think there has to be a lot to do with the person driving it and how they manage the truck while on the drive. just some info. i will have over 100k on it by next dec. no plans on getting rid of it.

Just something to think about for those with lighter boats looking for decent gas mileage. I just bought a 2009 F-150 extended cab from my mother in-law with the high output 4.6L 3V. I am getting 17 city and 21 highway and that's going 70mph on the highway. It's a 4x4 with 3.73 rear. I think it's a good, cheaper alternative to the Eco if you have a lighter boat. Of course it doesn't compare if you tow a heavy boat. I've been impressed with it so far and it tows great with the 6 speed. Borrowed it a few times and towed my boat to Tahoe. Pulled hard.

She bought a 2013 Screw with Eco so I will probably be buying that in 4-5 years if I think I can deal with the 5 foot bed. Sweet ride.

No issues pulling my 2010 Axis A22, even with the highway 3.15 gears. I just hit tow/haul and lock out 6th gear.

at 4100 miles this am, I am pretty sure my Turbo blew up.. Was driving in from out of state and went to speed up to catch a yellow light.. SHuttered, lost power and check engine... Shuttered once yesterday and i thought it was a tranny issue.. twice this am...
Just dropped off at Dealership and described.. service tech said, hmm.. thats what i needed to hear. Love my truck.. just curious of how common this is...

I heard of someone that had their hose blow off the intake. sounded like a gunshot went off and loss of power. They replaced the hose and went on their way.

Brad...
Just catching up on this thread. Hope your truck is fixed. Curious to hear what the issue was. Your truck and boat are a perfect match. Looks awesome!!!!!!!!!!!..... Maybe some black shoes on your truck now?????

cboom12 01-11-2013 7:15 PM

Brad check the f150 forums you can get the lowdown on the shudder. It's an inter cooler issue that causes others. There is a TSB and it should get taken care of.

Thats too bad about the truck Brad.

On my 06 6.0 i blew off the Outlet line from my Turbo when i punched it one day and it was like a shotgun going off under the hood. It hit the inside of the hood so hard it put a dent in the hood. I didnt get a check engine light but my turbo gauge went to 0 and i had no real power.

Never had this issue with my 08 though.

Not back from Vegas yet but dealership says it was computer issue and they flashed and updated it and all is good. They tested it several times. Well see tomorrow afternoon

Well boys... I finally pulled the trigger on an Ecoboost. This one is a 2013 Limited model. I couldn't resist the red seats. It looks like it was built to tow our VLX. BTW... I got a smoking deal too... $10k off MSRP.

I sure hope this engine lives up to the hype!

Love that package. Red seats will match the red accents on your VLX!
