Winch riding?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but I'm hoping I can still get some good advice here. I'm not getting nearly enough riding time anymore due to gas prices so I want to try winching. I live right on the lake and have easy access to rivers and my shoreline is about 100yds long so I will be able to set up sliders and ramps. I have never winched before so I'm wondering from those of you who have what is the best way to get into this? Is it cheaper and better to build your own or is would you buy one? Anyone have any good sites to learn more about them or sites where they have plans to build your own?

Thanks

Awesome sight, tons of people willing to help. Seems to me that if you already have some of the parts, a small engine, metal, a welder to fabricate it or a hookup with someone who can, that building your own can be fun, educational and come out to be specific to what you want.

However it also seems like theres a lot to go wrong, and you may have to trouble shoot some stuff. WIth the prices on used nice conditioned ones what they are, I would probably purchase one to start off, perhaps starting a project to build my own for the "neatness" or whatever.

Best of luck!

I am in the process of building my own diy winch. Here are a couple sites that I found helpful:

http://beachwinches.com/

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about where I purchased different parts or anything else. I'll be glad to help out if I can.

Good luck!

I highly recommend building your own. Aside from it being almost $500-600 cheaper than production winches, it provides a better understanding of how the components work which leads to safer use (most of the time...). The link that Joel posted is probably one of the best resources for everything from winch builds to mods to resolving issues you will come across.

Building one does look enticing.. I have been toying with it for a few months now..

Wakeskating.com has an entire forum dedicated to winching.

My Homie in Minnesota is making the first electric winch. Massive amounts of pull from the this thing, plus its super quiet so you dont get busted as fast!

I was just correcting Mr. Nintzel about his assumption that the lpi wake winches were the first electric winches.
