Cummins Fuel Mileage

1 Attachment(s)
Took a trip from Little Rock to Nashville last weekend and snapped this picture along the way. I realize it's not hand calculated, but on the the trip over through construction and a couple of stops I got 23.9 MPG with an avg speed of 74 MPH...2014 2500 Cummins with 3.42 gears. Considering the truck is north of 7500lbs I'm pretty happy with it.

Ugh, my IDI is averaging 12.8 MPG. Can't wait to swap in a ZF5 and knock cruise RPM down to ~2000 at 75... Now it's over 3000 RPM at 75. At slow speeds it's knocking on 20 MPG. Screaming along on the highway drops a few MPG and kills it. Plan B is just get a centrifuge and start running straight WMO instead of mixing a few gallons of filtered every tank. May do that anyway and MPG improvements.

My 2012 gets 13... If I reset it on the freeway when engine is hot I can get up to 17 lol

markj 11-15-2014 9:53 AM

Greg, is yours 2wd? My 2014 is 4wd with a 6" lift and 35's and the best I've gotten on long trips is 16.6. I also carry 1000lbs of stuff in the back at all times.

aricsx15 11-15-2014 4:09 PM

Why would you be curious why your mileage sucks when you have a lift and 35s and 1k in the bed?

chilidog 11-15-2014 4:14 PM

I have an 09 with 4.10s and 33s, before I did a hypertech programmer and intake I would be lucky to get 15 on the freeway, 11 around town. with those add ons I get about 14 in town and just got 21mpg on a long road trip with a dirt bike in the back catching wind over the top. If I woulda got the 3.73s it would be much better.

Who said I was curious? I only asked if his was 2wd. In fact, I think my mileage is great considering the way I choose to run it. It's 2mpg better than my 03 CTD was that was outfitted exactly the same.

scottb7 11-15-2014 7:33 PM

Bottom line is that, that is super low rpm's for that mph. Congrats on good choice. I get worse gas mileage in my 4 cylinder gmc terrain. Gas mileage goes from 31 mpg at 55 mph with about 1,500 rpms to piece of **** at 75 mph. There is just not another gear so the faster you go after 55 the more the rpm's go up. Next time around I got to check gas mileage at 75, NOT look at the window sticker. ME STUPID.

greg2 11-16-2014 9:52 AM

Mine is 4WD with 20 inch factory wheels and no modifications. I have an 09 V Ride and towing I'm usually getting about 13.5 - 14 MPG, but on one round trip to the lake I did get 15 MPG. This is the first diesel I have owned and it would be hard to go back to a gas engine.

wake26 11-17-2014 6:08 AM

I must be doing something wrong with my 08 Dodge cummins. I have 3.73 gears and I get 13 in town and the best I have seen on the hwy is 16.5. ( hand calculated) I have never come close to 20mpg. I just did all the deletes to my truck and added the EFI Live so hopefully this will help me get some better mpg. It would be interesting to see what the deference is between the lie O meter and hand calculated is in some of these trucks. I have seen a difference in 3-4mpg difference between my meter and hand calculated.

drballenbc 11-17-2014 7:16 AM

Wake26. I also have 2008 dodge with full delete and h and s chip. Defintiely made a difference in mileage particularly highway. But of course we don't do these things for mileage http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...fe8d4d27dc.jpg

So many variables to this that your post is misleading. These other guys posting real numbers should be advised. Now, if you truly did a hand calc driveway to driveway average I will be impressed.

I noticed you didn't put your lifetime average. And the little message in the corner shows 20...which is great...but I don't even trust that one as it may have been reset.

greg2 11-17-2014 2:54 PM

Tim C, you're right about the variables, but lets say it's off 10%, that's still better than 21.5 MPG and if it's off 20% it is still right at 20 MPG. However, I don't think it's off 20%. As for resetting the lifetime average, I haven't and I could care less if you trust that or not since I know that I didn't. Wasn't trying to mislead anyone and that's why I included the fact it was not hand calculated. The next time go on a trip I will hand calculate and see where it is. Regardless, it's doing way better than the 1/2 ton GMC I had before.

Just bought myself a 2014 cummins crew cab as well and just finish a 6 hour trip in it. All stock. Averaged between 21-22 mpg over the entire trip according to the computer which I know can be a bit misleading. Traveled around 70-75 mph.

Also got done towing a tige rz2 for a 6 hour stretch and averaged between 14-15 mpg traveling between 65-70 mph. Not too shabby. I'm loving the truck so far... just can't stand the TERRRIBLE factory paint job. It's metallic silver and looks like it was painted with a spray paint can. Just don't know if I want to go through the hassle of making Ram repaint my entire truck. It just annoys the crap outta me every time I see it.

scottb7 11-18-2014 4:46 AM

I insist that if you can go over 75 mph at about 1,500 rpm's you got a winner. End of report. It is no more complicated than that.

lifetimewarranty 11-18-2014 9:53 AM

20 lifetime is great Greg. You must spend most of the time empty on the highway to be getting that. Better than your 1/2 ton gasser isn't too hard to believe but it is still awesome in such a large beast of a rig. I was down to the 3/4 ton cummins or the Tundra when I bought my truck.

Surprised to hear that about the paint. I've had two black ones and both look great.

From San Jose to Tahoe and back at 72mph cruise set I average 21.9. In a 2014 2500 ram Cummings. Unloaded obviously

Redheadd 11-20-2014 9:27 AM

I love it!! My friends are blown away by it.

Redhead that will be my next truck. Currently run a 2014 1500 4x4 Laramie. Mostly freeway bay area and short tows with my X30.

srock 11-26-2014 7:46 AM

I'm looking forward to the new crop of 1/2 ton diesels in the pipeline.

Redheadd 11-26-2014 3:32 PM

That's damn good not a hemi though right?

I'm very interested in the new titan getting introduced @ the Detroit show with that v8 Cummins, also heard that Ford will be putting a diesel in a 1/2 ton

WakeWise 11-29-2014 3:05 PM

It's a 5.7 Hemi. Yep.
