Drain Plug light review

4 Attachment(s)
So I've read all the reviews on drain plug lights and I've had lights that I installed on my last boat, but I just hate drilling holes in my new boat. So I started doing a little research and came across a drain plug light made by Diablo Royale Customs. Their website is www.boatpluglight.com and before anyone says anything I'm not associated with them in anyway what so ever. I bought a dual head light for $180 and thought I would be throwing my money away but we were getting ready for a big trip to Norris Lake in Tennessee and I wanted to have something cool for our night rides. Needless to say I was blown away with the quality of the light as well as the ability to light up the water. I have a wake plate with a single cylinder in the middle so the light is partially blocked but it still does an awesome job of lighting up the water. I've attached a few pictures of it so you can see what mine looked like. I know there are a lot of options out there and this may not be the best option for under water lighting, but for me it has worked out great!!!! I did have a small issue but I was able to contact them and they quickly walked me thru the solution and I had them working within ten minutes of having them installed. If you are considering underwater lights I would highly recommend these!

Freakin' genious, no drilling required stupid easy install

gpd005 07-16-2015 11:03 AM

install was two wires and that was it. Very simply, clean, and now worries about any leaks. I'm very happy!

They're quite a bit less expensive on ebay dependent the wattage and illumni... what rating are these?

Wow!
I would not have thought a Drain Plug light would look so good.
I got talked into $600 lights with $350 install fee and it looks about the same. :banghead:
(see below)
Ill try the drain plug light on my next boat for sure.
Thanks for the review!

Looks good for $180!

<rant>
I still don't understand how these things are so expensive. Single is $55, double is 3x that, for a T-fitting and a couple elbows? I have some experience with scuba lights, and this is basically just a bare LED grid, voltage regulator, and waterproofing. No reflector, controller, switch, battery housing or battery, yet it costs the same as a complete scuba light? It would be nice if someone did real lumen / lux testing on these things. </rant>

looks great!!! yes, please let us know exactly which product you purchased.

I haven't bought one of these (yet), but have looked into them quite a bit. If you check out the videos on his site he's done quite a bit of testing against the other drain plug LED's and his are definitely superior.

boardjnky4 07-16-2015 12:08 PM

It's 40 watts and 1800lumens (900 lumens per light)

onetogofast 07-16-2015 12:09 PM

Not priced too bad at all!!

boardjnky4 07-16-2015 12:13 PM

This one is probably MUCH brighter

^ that one looks like its for threaded plug holes. is there another version for 1" rubber plug holes? or am I missing something

This is the exact one I purchased. Looks like a lot of positive reviews and I bet I put five or six hours on them and they worked great for me that trip. They also have a newer light out that looks to be even brighter but I was happy with this one.

denverd1 07-16-2015 12:38 PM

is that one threaded too? all the ones I found look like their threaded.

I'm using this for a plug:

What boat do you own that doesn't use a threaded plug?

I would not trust a rubber stopper plug on any closed-bilge boat. They're nice for boston whalers, jon boats, etc... where you can easily access the drain plug, but not on a boat where the drain is not accessible.

actually, its a Sanger v230. The plug clamps down squeezing the rubber to make a good seal. I've lost count of how many times I've pulled it out of the lake and had ZERO water in the bilge so I think I'll be fine.

jonblarc7 07-16-2015 12:59 PM

Garon can you take a pic of it installed on the trailer. I think your wake plate is as close to the drain plug as the one on my supra. Is there any problem with it interfering with it?

I use a rubber one in our center plug location .... the stock brass "T" is really hard to turn with the ballast pump locations.... rear one would scare me a bit though.

denverd1 07-16-2015 2:06 PM

close to 50 hours on the plug without issue! I'll check and see if its threaded.

Yep give me a day or two, we will have the boat out tomorrow and i'll try to grab one then.

I had a drain plug light I bought off ebay last year. It was only $30. It totally worked and for $30 it was awesome. THere was a big right up on it about last May 2014 or June 2014 with links to the lights if you look back through the forum.

Cabledog 07-17-2015 12:17 PM

^^^ I bought one of those too. Great for what it is. My wake plate ram blocks it a little but for 30 bucks its almost free.

here a couple of pics installed

jonblarc7 07-21-2015 7:12 AM

Looks good

Thanks that's the exact pic I wanted to see. Looks like it would work with my supra too.

hatepain 07-21-2015 9:13 AM

Nacho, my Sanger has a brass threaded inlet but I too use a rubber crank down plug. 420 hours with no problems.

CALIV210 07-21-2015 2:11 PM

my sanger has the same rubber plug i wish i could find this for the old style plugs

denverd1 07-21-2015 2:43 PM

IIRC mine came with a rubber plug. even has the chain hanging out of the drain hole on occasion. didn't get out last wknd so still not sure if I can use this or not!

Thanks guys, I wasn't worried about it but it helps knowing i'm not the only one!

denverd1 08-05-2015 7:36 AM

Does anyone have color preferences? I'm thinking red, but it seems blue is most common. Main use would be for night rides and swimming at night.

I have the single version plug light from boatpluglight.com and am very happy with it. Finally got a pic of it the other day when we were out until sunset. There is still daylight in the pic so I'm thinking it will be even brighter at night.

CALIV210 04-26-2016 1:23 PM

I got the single rubber plug version as well I will post a pic once i get it out at night . It seems like good quality and is really right in the pool .

BTW to those that doubt .. there are lots of high end boats still using the rubber plug for the bilge . I wouldnt recommend the lever type though seems like a kid could knock that off too easy swimming around the back of the boat when hanging out .

beg4wake 04-27-2016 6:31 AM

I installed a green one that I got from the following link for only $30 to go with the 2 blue factory leds on my 08 XStar...contrast was pretty cool. And it was only $30!! I never really got a good night time pic of it, but it looked pretty sweet. Below is a pic a friend had of it before sun down. Trust me, it looked a lot brighter at night!

I was thinking of getting the single light version. Any other night pics? Do you think it's worth it for the double version?

turbojedi 04-28-2016 6:11 PM

Did any of you have to remove the wake plate to get it to screw in ?? They look great..

mikeab8 06-08-2016 6:46 AM

Has anyone had trouble with the size? The Diablo Royale is a 1/2" NPT and my drain plug is 3/4" straight thread with O-ring. Anyone know where I could go any adapter to get it to fit right? I've been trying to get this to work for too long now :banghead:

TomH 06-08-2016 7:01 AM

This adapter should get you there http://www.finditparts.com/products/...cts-h3269x12x8

dp513 06-17-2016 8:28 PM

Has anyone seen or used an rgb drain plug light?

turbojedi 08-11-2016 10:09 AM

Has anyone put one on there supra yet??

CALIV210 08-11-2016 2:35 PM

ok so I have yet to snap a picture of mine but I am not very impressed . Its pretty bright in perfectly clean water like the pool but under the swim deck of my v210 you can hardly see it in most lakes . I know my boat sits a little low in the back but I really did think it would be brighter . My buddy had a dual plug set up on his malibu skier and its brighter then mine but not that much brighter . I cant get my boat into Tahoe to see how it would be in really clear water otherwise Id tell you guys how it works there .
