I am looking at a 1990 Supra Sunsport but the guy who owns it does not know what engine is in it. Does anyone have any clue what they offered in them? thanks.

saltare_inverts 04-06-2009 7:13 PM

It should be a 351 Ford blocked Pleasurcraft Marine motor. I had one, great engine. Around 260 HP.

mattgettel 04-06-2009 7:32 PM

i really appreciate the help man. is there any way to be sure? can i call the manufacturer with the serial number or something?

j_money 04-06-2009 8:03 PM

its the 351 Windsor man! What Jack said. Its an AWESOME engine! decent power and maintenance is SUPER cheap! Get parts for it at any local auto shop for like a buck. and they can be rebuilt for nothing! Pretty sure that was the standard engine in the Sunsports from like 84 to 92 with minor upgrades here and there like ignition. Couple of my buds bought an 87 last year and that was a pretty FREAKIN sick wake boat for the price!!! Good luck with it!!

wakemikey 04-07-2009 6:04 AM

You have a SN2001 now? The wakeboard wake isn't as steep on the SS but it can still be big. The surf wave is totally awesome. PM me if you wanna chat. I have an 87. But the best models are supposed to be 89 and up.

formfunction 04-07-2009 6:15 AM

Didn't they also offer a big block chevy as a engine upgrade?

mhunter 04-07-2009 6:48 AM

Distributor in the front Ford ,distributor in the back Chevy. Take a pic of the motor and we will identify for you.

dh03r6 04-07-2009 7:24 AM

I had a 92 comp came with the 351, man i loved that engine. The parts are cheap skidim.com and it was bullet proof. A more important thing to check is the tranny you want the 1.23:1 over the 1:1. PCM is the best.

mattgettel 04-07-2009 8:28 AM

it is the 1.23:1

dh03r6 04-07-2009 8:32 AM

Its a reduction gear tranny its better then the 1:1 it will give you more pull out of the whole. When you look at the boat check to see what it has. Not that the 1:1 is bad.

Wow thats clean, good find you will love that boat im jealous. Post full picks when you can.

bill_airjunky 04-07-2009 9:03 AM

Distributor in the front.... Ford. Thats the PCM / Ford 351 alright. Good motor. Looks like brand new. How about the rest of the boat?

mattgettel 04-07-2009 9:03 AM

i will post full pics tomorrow hopefully. the boat is a 1990 with 238 hours and is compltley stock. i gave 10 grand for it. (not boasting just to be used as a reference)

lovin_the_wake 04-07-2009 10:22 AM

damn dude I have a 91 SS and my engine is clean but nowhere near that clean it looks like is was just dropped in. Does the rest of the boat look that good ?

mattgettel 04-07-2009 10:36 AM

yeah it really does. there is one rip in all of the interior that is no longer than a quarter of an inch long. the hull has 2 scratches that are about 2 inches long each and may buff out, but prob wont. those scratches are on the side and i can find no scratches what so ever on the bottom of the boat. no stains on the carpet and the single axle trailer looks like it was literally painted yesterday.

polarbill 04-07-2009 10:38 AM

Awesome. I am really jealous. I really want to see some pics of the boat.

mattgettel 04-08-2009 5:24 AM

maxx_wake 04-08-2009 5:31 AM

Very nice! I had a 90 that looked pretty much exactly like that one. I removed the stickers on mine and I really liked the look a lot better without them.

maxx_wake 04-08-2009 5:32 AM

Actually my 90 is still in my profile pic. I havent updated that in awhile.

mattgettel 04-08-2009 6:01 AM

do you have any pics of your boat after taking the stickers off?

dh03r6 04-08-2009 7:07 AM

Gold mine

da_mose 04-08-2009 9:06 AM

Matt

Here is some pic of my 89 sunsport after I removed the stickers.

mattgettel 04-08-2009 9:14 AM

damn thats clean. very good looking boat. im assuming thats the new dimension tower. i am very close to ordering one, how do you like it?

bill_airjunky 04-08-2009 9:19 AM

Wow, that boat is in mint condition, Matt. Score!

Nice pink & turquoise. Not much you can do about the pink piping in the interior, but if the pink on the hull is not a decal but in the fiberglass, you could do some vinyl decals over it to update the look quite a bit...... maybe black or dark blue?

lovin_the_wake 04-08-2009 9:25 AM

Matt G, You just made my day for so long I have thought I was the only Sunsport owner that had the pink piping on the interior and pink stripes on the outside lol Sick boat though

wakemikey 04-08-2009 10:23 AM

I couldn't use New Dimension because it doesn't collapse flat enough to fit under my boat lift.

Awesome lookin boat you will so love it!! Get ready to surf...

elbastardo 04-08-2009 10:50 AM

I like my ND tower, but like Mikey said, it doesn't collapse low enough to fit through a standard garage door. Also, if you get the ND board racks, you will need to get new hardware. They give you 1 tiny bolt, which will rip right out of the tower--you need to reinforce with a longer bolt and a big washer.

mattgettel 04-08-2009 7:21 PM

thanks for the input guys.

hey montgomery...you know how someone gets really good at something and suddenly anything they do is cool? like when shawn white started wearing a hankerchief like an old school train robber. i am hoping to get so good that people will think the pink is cool....haha.

mattgettel 04-08-2009 7:23 PM

i am also lucky enough to have a 9 foot garage door so i AM HOPING it will fit under that. (the nd tower that is)

maxx_wake 04-08-2009 7:30 PM

Here is a pic of mine without the stickers.

mhunter 04-08-2009 9:30 PM

89 Sunsport pink accent stripe and piping.

da_mose 04-09-2009 8:39 PM

Matt
The answer to your question Yes its a New Dimention Tower I put it on a few years back and I love it, it folds forward really easy and only takes a few mins.

jcurtis 04-09-2009 9:49 PM

da mose, what type of cover is that and are you happy with it?

polarbill 04-10-2009 8:46 AM

Da mose, is that at Chelan? Your Sunsport might be the best looking of that vintage that I have seen.

I really like the look of that New Dimensions Clone tower but how tall is it? My tower on my Mob V was so friggin low, especially with speakers on it.

Has anybody seen one of these with a Titan I or II. One of the things that I like most about the older boats like that is the windshield. It allows you to sit on the side of the boat while putting around the lake. I think you would still be able to do this with the Titan. Only problem is that I am not sure if it would look that good.

mattgettel 04-10-2009 8:56 AM

i havent even checked it out yet, but can i take the ski pole out of mine. if so, how difficult is it?

dh03r6 04-10-2009 9:09 AM

You can take it out, its held in with screws the angles are tricky.

illkid 04-10-2009 9:10 AM

Hey Mose, it's almost riding season...got the dry suit all dry cleaned, pressed and ready for the big dance. Lets do this! P.S. lets get that fully auto 2500# ballast system you've been dreaming about installed...

elbastardo 04-10-2009 9:12 AM

I originally wanted a Titan on mine, but I couldn't figure out how to get the mounts to fit right. Yes, you can take the ski pylon out. There are 4 bolts that you can access through the engine box. Once those are loose, you can just slide the pole out. I stuck a piece of flat plastic (a lid from something in the garage) in there to fill the hole. Makes it feel much roomier.

elbastardo 04-10-2009 9:16 AM

Here is a pic with pylon out.

salty87 04-10-2009 10:15 AM

i left mine out when i rebuilt the floors. mine was rusted together, wouldn't come apart.

saltare, not sunsport

mattgettel 04-10-2009 10:28 AM

thanks guys. the boat is pretty clean so there should not be an issue with rust. (although who really knows)

da_mose 04-10-2009 11:41 AM

Joe
That cover is from skiboatcovers.com its a good cover but i got to get cutouts for the tower still.

da_mose 04-10-2009 11:51 AM

Hey Brett
Yep thats the Grandveiw or old Caravel hotel right across from Campbells Resort last summer.
I'm not really sure how tall it is I'm 5'10 and I have to reach up to touch my speakers so its way up there I got to stand on the engine cover to hook up the rope.

da_mose 04-10-2009 11:58 AM

Willson
Lets go anytime had Old Blue on Stevens Monday it f$$kn cold but butter. Yeah I'm ready to start my ballast system and a bigger swim step this year.

mattgettel 04-12-2009 6:59 PM

i was working on my boat today and saw the round metal piece on the front. i am thinking that it is for an anchor but it seems as though it could put a lot of pressure on the front light. i am just wondering what it is for.

bill_airjunky 04-12-2009 9:24 PM

Is it a lifting ring?

mattgettel 04-13-2009 5:20 AM

i suppose it could be, but why would you "lift" the front end of the boat? But now that i think about it it does look like a lifting ring.

maxx_wake 04-13-2009 5:45 AM

I took the pylon out of mine also but it didnt come out easily. I took the bolts out but I think it was somehow bent/rusted in place after years of use with an extended pylon. I had to cut it out which was somewhat of a pain. Also, since mine was permanently removed I kind of regreted taking it out when I went to sell the boat.

(Message edited by maxx_wake on April 13, 2009)

mattgettel 04-13-2009 6:46 AM

i got my ski pole out with no problems. i am now in the process of making another aluminum plate identical to the one i removed only solid. shouldnt take but an hour or so.

bill_airjunky 04-13-2009 7:50 AM

Lots of inboard boats have lifting rings. The transom rings are where you lift in the rear. Typically it would be just for pulling it off the trailer to launch or store it. The manufacturer uses them more during the building process than most owner use them during the boat's lifetime. I had them on my 205 & removed it. And liked the clean look a lot better.

mattgettel 04-13-2009 8:38 AM

thanks bill. i am going to look into taking it off.

bill_airjunky 04-13-2009 9:11 AM

As I recall there was a threaded rod from the bottom of the lifting ring to the bow ring. I had to cut that rod & got access to it by removing the bow seat. It was a royal PITA.
Good luck.

wotan 04-13-2009 9:48 AM

Love all the old school supra pride.... anyone know who sells cupholders like I can see in the above pictures? My boat is in BAD need of cupholders!

da_mose 04-13-2009 11:16 AM

Here's a pic from my Supra Sunsport owners manual on lifting or Hoisting !!!

Sorry for the fuzzy pic, the high rez scans didn't compress very well but you get the idea anyway.

mattgettel 04-14-2009 3:54 AM

thats pretty neat. thanks cmosley. im new to the world of inboards and am wondering the best way to trailer the boat after use. should i just drive it on the same way i did my I/O?

bill_airjunky 04-14-2009 7:47 AM

Thats pretty much how I do it, Matt. There are little details that are different (no outboard to lift before you drag it up the ramp). But if your using a trailer & a ramp, it's really the same.

I know it seems weird, but some people don't use ramps or trailers. There are places on Puget Sound near Seattle & private lakes in eastern WA. where the boat is stored on a rack or cart, and lifted to & from the water by a crane. It's definitely not the norm any more though.

wakemikey 04-14-2009 7:54 AM

With an I/O you drive up to the trailer and crank it on. With carpeted bunks the boat should NOT be cranked on. The carpet must be underwater and drive the boat all the way on. If it won't go on straight, the trailer is in too deep.

IMHO I wouldn't remove the lifting rings.

mattgettel 04-15-2009 12:42 PM

wakemikey, hit me up with a pm if you read this and dont mind.
