2005 Sanger Prop Shaft packing leaking.
I notice yesterday right after I put the boat in the water, I heard water leaking. I investigated and came to find the prop shaft packing was leaking. Now I know they are suppose to leak to keep the joint cool. But this one was leaking and about a 3 year old boys pee rate. Not quite that much, but more than I think it should be leaking. I would think a drip every other second would be ok. Not a pee stream. I didn't get a real good look at how this packing works. Does any body have some pictures or a part number for this? Any help from anyone who has worked with this packing before would be great. Thanks guys!

How many hours are on your boat? You probably don't need to replace the packing yet, it just needs to be tightened. Or you can go to the dripless packing route and be done with it. Search the board there are a ton of great threads for fixing this issue.

Can't hurt to try tightening before replacing.
I tighten mine up every couple years, so far still on the original packing - 600 hrs. plus. |
Can you twist it by hand? It looks pretty confined in that space. What tools do I need? any cotter pins required?

No cotter pin, just the packing nut and a lock nut.

I use two adjustable plumber lock nut wrenches for this job. You'll be able to twist the packing nut by hand once you have the lock nut loosened; however, when you find the ideal drip position you'll want to tighten the lock nut with the wrenches. You can find them at pretty much any hardware store for about $8 a piece.

I just bought a 2006 V215 with 220 hours and experienced the same issue, I had the packing seal replaced and it seems to be fine now, I will know more after the weekend.

What do I do about the safety wire? Do I need to replace it?

Ok guys, I use the above wrench and a pair of big channel locks. But I could not tighten or loosen the joint to get it to stop leaking. I think I will just wait until winter then replace it with a drippless one. What do you guys think?

I would just put new packing in. To put drip-less in you have to pull the shaft ect.
