Torn Pec Muscle

Well, I've escaped major injury for a while but I guess my time was up. MRI today to confirm the extent of the damage, but doctor thinks complete pec major rupture and will require surgery. End of season for me.

Anybody had this injury and have insight about the recovery?

how did you manage that?

That’s a new one for me, I’ve heard of torn biceps before though which are roughly 6mo recovery

Landed tail heavy on a scarecrow and dug my trailing arm into the water. Then felt on that arm as well. Total freak injury.

I have done it, but luckily not a complete rupture. I was able to just rehab it and get back to full strength/mobility. Mine happened at the cable, tried to ride out a fall (embarrassingly right off the dock learning to nollie start) and the upward pull was too much. I head it tear like Velcro.

I remember doing a bunch of research on that surgery at the time because I thought I might need it. If I remember right, the rehab is pretty long and hard due to the anchors in the bone to reattach the tendon (assuming you tore the tendon off the bone?)

You probably won’t find a lot of input here unfortunately cause it’s not a common injury in wakeboarding. I’d find out what sport is prone to bicep tear and see what threads you might be able to find on the forum where enthusiasts for that sport go. Think it can happen to linemen in football... Weightlifting maybe???

Thanks Dyost. It is interesting...I found one website talking about the most common activities and it actually listed water skiing in additional to boxing, wrestling, and then weight lifting being the leading cause. Such a freak injury and hard to comprehend on it could happen wakeboarding. I've been riding for 25+ years and have fallen thousands of times but never hurt my pec or shoulder in the process.

I hadn’t thought about waterskiing... I could see where a torn pec could happen there all stretched out around a bouy and clip the water and try to ride it out rather than bail.

Probably on the rarer side... but man anything can happen in wakeboarding, lots of speed and forces involved.

I tore my pic a few years ago and never had it fixed so now it looks like have a huge dent in my left pec. It still hurts sometimes and I had to adapt my riding a bit to tricks that don’t put as much tension on my lead arm. I ditched tantrums and instead of doing Ts fronts I started learning scarecrows. I’d just rest and rehab accordingly and then just adapt your style to things that don’t put stress on the injury
