Sick of slow gas cans
 

These new "no spill" cans are the suck. After shopping around trying to find a proper venting can and being told you can no longer buy them, I decided to Improvise.

All you need is a 1/4" drill bit and a drill and some locking clips for Rubbermaid wire shelving. You can find these for about 2 bucks in the storage isle of lowes or Home Depot.

Just use the plug/clip to fill the hole and yank it out while pouring.

Hah, yours look better than mine. Mine have some sort of "store/pour" mechanism, all cheapo plastic of course, that supposedly lets you control the flow, but they always flick back to "store" and cut off the flow. Even when they're flowing, they gurgle and bubble and suck bad. Everyone recommends race cans (for ATVs), but for some reason they're not legal somehow?

Just be aware that if you get caught with a rigged can you are subject to all applicable fines etc... sucks but it is what it is. I would just try to buy some old cans on Craigslist or something. Or is this law making all old cans illegal too?

I live 30 seconds from the lake but 10 mins from the gas station. That's why I gotta use cans. I doubt I'll have any legal issues around here. Cool can on jets tho, I would just rather spend 40 bucks somewhere else

Do you have a link to this specific law for personal use? I have never heard of this law. I believe it is known that you are suppose to use approved gasoline containers for dispensing but I have never heard of a law prohibiting a gasoline container from being modified.

From what I am reading, the EPA requires manufactures to follow the guidelines.

How well does that really work?

Yep, I will never pour again now that I have a shaker siphon.

Typically (I am no legal expert but I do have a background in Fire Protection and Safety) the EPA regulates manufactures but have no jurisdiction over personal use. Which is why you are allowed to store all the chemicals of various types next to each other and use them how you like in your garage. So you can store the gasoline, once purchased in an approved container, however you like as long as it is for personal use.

The shaker siphon works great but it's still a little slow for my taste since I'm usually in a hurry to get the boat out. Most people use the squeeze/siphon method seen here:

I also added a similar vent to the OP but I used car tire stems instead that you can find at any auto parts store for about $3/pair

yeah shaker siphons arent super quick but i usually have to fill up sacs too so i do that at the same time.

Go look at the shaker siphon I posted.. it's a BIG hose. Empty a 5gal can in under a minute.

I have been hauling gas for years. Boat is on a lift and I refuse to pay marina prices.
I can't believe no one advocated the steel cans. Yes, they are expensive, but they last forever and you can dump gas out super fast!

Make sure to get the one with the larger 1" diameter hose.

For the new cans I use the shaker Syphon on the fill farther from the dock with these crappy new cans, dump with a funnel and tube with old can at the dockside fill, 15 gallons goes in with little effort and time. I HATE THE STUPID SAFETY MECHANISM LOCK it makes them spill all over the place in the car. Just get yourselves a nice funnel with tube (like the one you used in college) and pour away.

vp racing jugs with the pour spout won't spill a drop and dump fast, you can't beat them.

I just did the valve stem mod on two of my cans last night.

+1 for siphon... Its like 5 gallons in 15 seconds, can't beat it.
