does anyone else hang off of the side of the boat or the tower to add weight? it really makes a huge difference in the size and shape of the wake, heres a pic!

you can see the water is spaying off of the rub rail. and the back corner is under water.

wakemitch 11-08-2007 9:41 AM

ive been on the boat when people were doing it. it deffinitely helps but there must be a better alternative.

bigshow 11-08-2007 9:55 AM

The X-2 and X-Star are very wide from aft to stern. I suspect that's why you have to work so hard to get the boat to list. I and another WW poster have mounted weights on the tower. You want you ballast as far out board as you can get it. You have to do that without the local marine patrol stopping to see what you’re doing. I’ve had police helicopters come over to “rescue” us. They had fire trucks and police card running all up and down the shore trying to find the sinking boat that a motorist reported on a 911 call. The local marine patrol officers are cool and now they all know me on a first name basis.

Tower weights

I need a full 20 degree list for a really good surf wake. I do it with out hanging anyone off the edge of the boat.

Mitch- yeah there is a better alternative but we were just seeing how good we can get the wave, and its alot of fun when u kick ur buddy off. We are going to get more sacs.

Edward- yeah you do have to use more weight and work harder top get it leaning but 2200lbs actually does pretty well. with 2200lbs we are at the rub rail and then when we lean people off of the side we get it looking like ur boat. dude that is a insane story lol that would have been cool to have seen all of that. besides the weights on the tower how else is ur boat weighted?

hatepain 11-08-2007 8:06 PM

It's totally dependant on the type of boat you have. In mine Sanger V215 it works well but in my buddy's SANTE 210 it works against us. Mind you we run 2800lbs on one side not including people. You have to figure out how to get the most displacement for your hull type.

bigshow 11-08-2007 8:11 PM

Not counting crew, up to 2,800 pounds in a boat that has a significantly smaller foot print than the X2. I like to put the rub rail and lettering in the water.

Seriously 2,800 pounds in my boat is too much. I have her up for sale so I can look at getting better surf hull.

I use my hydraulic trim tab on the goofy wake, I have some small heavy ballast bags and just a few other tricks.

Rubrail below the water line - no the lettering too

You can never have too many surfboards

Regular

and Dark

Our old ballast system - not recommended

I hate to be a drag, but hanging on the tower like that really stresses the fiberglass and the tower. Over a period of time, I'd say something is going to crack. One of those things I'd say that a boat company would not recommend. A good idea for weighting but I'd try mounting some other type of hardware (with extra reinforcement) for hand holds.

Better off just adding ballast. The police here in the PNW will actually give me a ticket if they see any part of your body outside the boat. We can't even sit on the sun deck while running!

I would pay that guy on the back of the green boat to come ride with us

sailing216 01-10-2008 4:02 PM

guy on the back of green boat doesn't need a life jacket to boot. If he falls in, he just floats...

inland_surfer 01-14-2008 10:42 AM

you will probable get pulled over - then it just leads to more lookie lookie buy the police officer, like no fire extinguisher, not enough life jackets, no vehicle registration, no throwable seat cushion - bla, bla, bla.

bigshow 01-14-2008 6:08 PM

I think that IS has it about right. When we were hiking out we were already getting too much attention. So I came up with another way. If you have to hang off the tower there’s something wrong with your set up. In my case I’m selling my boat so I can buy one with a better surfing hull. If your wake is smallish and/or mushy without leaning over the edge and you don’t want to spring for a different boat then you might consider getting a bigger board Like an IS Red Tide or a Shred Stixx JaMako.

I think that there are a lot of really good surf boats out there to choose from.
