I just did some research and saw that these old big cars from the 70's had tow ratings of 6000 to 7000 pounds! that's mind blowing!

Well ya, they didn't really have SUVs back then. I mean there were Suburbans and the like back then, but most people had a full sized car like this. It was either a truck or a setup like this. Originally they were made to pull a jet stream trailer or similar for camping.

yes .. at its oldest it's 1976 ... that's when GM introduced that rectangular headlight.

I'm not an expert but it looks Cadillac ... maybe Pontiac.

Still, it's likely a 1976 to 1979 GM product ... possibly also with a 454. That thing will have all the muscle one could want for that towing set-up ... and this from a guy who tows with a Honda 6-cylinder.

75 was the first year of rectangle headlight. And the only one with clear turn signals if memory serves.

And generally they got a 500ci Big Block Specific to Caddy. Not a 454.

air bags? my family had a mid 80's caddy with some sort of auto-level suspension.

we also had a '75 Olds convertible which doesn't compare well to a Caddy except in poor gas mileage and size...it would have been dragging its tail pipe.

No we did not actually tow with it. It was just for a shot. I have no doubt it would probably tow it around a bit, but the ass would be on the ground for sure. I wasn't gonna spoil it until someone would point it out. We were not able to hide the jack that well, so I knew it was only a matter of time!!!

The only reason I caught it is because I was gonna take the same shot with my BMW "towing" my Supra. Photoshop will take care of that pesky jack wheel.

Not to mention the fact that most cars, no matter how big, lack the ground clearance necessary to launch on a shallow ramp without taking water in the doors (and other places water shouldn't go in a car). How many times have you launched with your truck only to find the water level barely inches below the door jams?

...ask me how I know...

We thought we were pretty damn clever towing the old ski boat up to the lake with the '71 Tornado... until we realized we couldn't get the boat far enough into the water to float off the trailer without filling the car with water. Might work on a steep ramp, but then you have the issue of traction. Wish I had pics of that particular adventure. Luckily, somebody had a truck.

This was about 25 years ago........it did what we needed it to - get us to the lake!

The things we can do when we are young poor and desperate. I've been there. I've seen people launching 17 foot Glastrons with old beater cars from the 70's before. It's always fun to watch. Usually the person launching is even funnier than the situation they created. Think people of Walmart. Water in the back seat is probably not a big concern.
