Wakeboarding in the XGames?

what do you guys think would have to happen for wakeboarding to come back to the XGames? what do you think the setup probably be? (wake the line?)

Kane 03-31-2015 1:36 AM

Personally I don't think it will happen, money talks and there just isn't the demand or financial backing for wakeboarding. If freestyle motocross best trick has been dropped in place of gaming then wakeboarding hasn't a chance. I'm not sure that is a bad thing, X-games is a shadow of it's former self, it has no soul. imho.

If wakeboarding were to comeback to an extreme sports event then I think the format something like the Red Bull Harbour Reach would be the most consumer / neutral friendly format.

Behind the boat contest are boring as hell to watch, and cable if you ride boats is no fun either. I don't think it will ever happen. Now wake surfing that's a different story cuz those dudes get EXTREME!

IF, it came back it would be a system 2.0 setup for sure.... boat riding just doesn't draw the crowd and leads to location issues.

.... I think it would have a chance, but that's only if Redbull pumped in the cash. An ideal setup would be something like Daytona Raceway... you could do 100% of the events within the walls of the raceway, and there is the large lake there too. One big venue for everything, but not sure how many sites like that exist near a major metro area.

Totally enough room for MX, rally, all the street / vert competitions, etc etc, and the lake for watersports.... and being able to hit everything in one place would be perfect.

We have done events there but I was not there. Not sure what year

I don't see it happening either. There has been a shift with the X-Games. I mean, they're putting in PC gaming as a sport now.

DenverRider 03-31-2015 11:00 AM

I remember how excited I was when the X-games came about. Now I don't even know what time of year it comes on because I'm not a fan of skateboarding or motocross. I watched the X-games movie and it felt like it could turn into a snuff film at any moment. I don't think the PC gaming is going to be a hit until they put a Taser in the controller that has the potential to kill the user if they screw up. I think people just want to see someone get injured now. Water is just too safe for that. I guess that's why even wakeboarding has added so many dangerous obstacles like rails and the like. You aren't doing anything cool unless imminent death is involved. I personally would rather see the flow of an amazing wake to wake aerial of any kind but I guess that I'm in the minority even within the wakeboarding community.

I don't think the tasers in the controllers would kill a normal person. However these aren't normal people, there have been gamers that have gamed so long and intense, without getting up, without exercise, with so much caffeine pumping through their blood, that they get a blood clot and die when they stand up. Tasers probably would kill some of them.
This I'd watch

There was a time were the X-Games was amazing. Now it's just boring to watch. I am shocked that people find Skateboard Halfpipe more intersting that wakeboarding.

To be fair.. early X-Games had it's loser events, too.

Street Luge? Sky Surfing?

I agree, you forgot speed climbing and rollerblading. But there was some type of magic to them, an air of freshness. Now its like the same old regurgitated garbage.

The way things are headed with the X-Games, extreme texting, twitter battles, RC Car Racing, and Crossfit will be joining PC Gaming.

At least it was fun watching the street luge guys hit the bales at 70+

Actually heard a rumor today of a big XGames announcement involving wake that's coming in the next day or two. I didn't get much info, but what I heard would be a great re-introduction to get wake back in X-Games.

C'mon man April Fools was yesterday!

At this point, wakeboarding getting back into the X-Games would be a step backwards. Its well past its prime. Our participation would be for them, not us.

Sly_Park_Mark 04-05-2015 12:28 PM

If Pastrana took up wakeboarding, it would be back in the X-Games in two seconds flat. It's pretty much just the Pastrana games anyway, at this point. It was a lot of fun to watch back in the day when Harf was dominating them, but I don't care if wakeboarding is in or out of the games now.
