At what age did you buy your first boat and what was it?
Just a question based on curiosity as I'm 29 and looking to buy mine sometime next spring or summer.

~22. 1989 Mastercraft Prostar 190. Spent around $8k I believe. Next year spent another $3500 on a Samson tower + racks & lights. (10 foot pole wasn't cutting it)

Age: 24
Year: 2009 Boat: 2004 Super Air Nautique Cost: 30K Financed 50% with local credit union, splitting the monthly payment with my girlfriend (now wife). Payment total was around $430/month IIRC. Paid it off early when we had the cash. Now own a 2016 G23 with my lovely wife. Life is good (and we've worked our butts off). |
In 2015, at 31, I bought a 2003 Malibu VLX. It has been a great boat. Just sold it 2 weeks ago and am mid purchase of a 2013 A22 LS3. My advice is if you can afford it in the near future, get the boat you ultimately want. That way you don't have to pay tax twice :banghead:
|
26 I bought a 2004 Malibu response for about 10,000.
Sold it the following year and bought a brand new axis t22 with my wife. |
23 year old in like 2006 I think. 1995 Nautique Super Sport paid 18k for it and put ballast and a Bimini and 4 cheap 6.5 tower speakers on it. Sold after three year for the same price I paid for it.
Bought current Supra 24 sunsport for a really good price and don't think I would have any problem getting rid of it for a price close to what I paid for it. |
I was 24.
Bought a new '07 Moomba Outback. Sold it the next year for a Supra 21v. Spent a few years without a boat due to having kids. Now I'm back in the game with a Nautique 230! |
First boat
I was 20, and it was an Avenger 17 ft. ski boat with a 115 hp Merc. ob.The year: 1976. Kept it till 2004 when I bought a 2 yr. old X-Star. Still have the MC and love it.
|
21yrs old 2000: 21 ft 1999caravelle interceptor ($25k) Then bought my first wakeboard and got hooked!!!!! Traded in for a new 2002 tige 20i (33k) that only had a tower and board racks. Bought fat sacks, pumps, stereo and speakers, installed all myself, plus made my own tower speakers out of PVC tubes. Had that til 2009. Next yr bought a 2010 tige Z1, and had that til 2015. Sold the tige a bought a 2014 G23.

Year: 2006 Boat: 2005 Centurion Elite V (New!) I sold the Centurion in 2010 and bought an X15. I sold the X15 in 2014 and bought an X25. I love the X25, but I'm starting to feel the itch again.... |
Age:28
Year:2014 Boat: 2015 Tige Z3- loaded Wife got to pick the colors. We made so many good memories in that boat, put 200 hours of boarding in a year and half, and decided to upgrade to a 2017 Tige RZX3 last Sept. Found out we were pregnant the following month and still managed to knock down 100hrs this season. We love the water so much that we recently snagged some water front property and are looking forward to a bunch of memories with the kiddo there. Live in the moment (within reason) and buy the best boat you can in your budget, that fits your priorities. I don't sweat the payments, as long as its getting used and we are taking great care of it. Its not a cheap hobby, so factor in everything that could come up. My crew has changed drastically since the beginning, as you'll find those that "need" to bail early every time, or just get too silly, at your expense. Good luck and the best times are ahead! |
Was 24, bought a 2013 Bayliner 195. Got me on the lake and learned the navigation.
Traded it in at the end of that summer and paid the differeremce for a 2013 Centurion SV211. |
Age: 34
Year: 2014 Boat: 2009 Tige 22ve Previously I was using my "families/parents" boat that nobody else ever used and it lived at my house but I did not own it. I used the money from that boat when we sold towards the Tige. At the cost of all these new boats and even the used market I will probably have this one for quite some time. |
Age: 27
Year: 2003 Boat: 1992 Sport Nautique |
17 when I was a senior in high school (1989). Saved enough to put down $2500 on a new Skeeter bass boat with 90hp Johnson. Dad matched my $2500 and my payments were $128 a month. I learned how to barefoot behind that boat with an 80' rope.

Back in '88 when I was 15 I bought my first boat. 20Hp 9ft Spitfire 2-seater. Skied the hell out of that thing, got up on one ski. Fun/$ was insane!
|
Age 21. Boat was a 1990 Malibu mystere that I picked up for 9k. Had that thing for 8 years, added a tower, racks, tower speakers and like 400 hours. sold for 8k. I still remember the first time I took it out. Impeller shredded 5 minutes into the trip and I didn't know until a few minutes later. The temp gauge was pegged by then. Literally pegged. I turned the key off but the engine would not shut off... it was so hot it was diseling (running without spark). I was freaking out! Didn't know what to do. Someone towed us back to my buddy's parents dock. I thought we were gonna have to push the boat away from the dock and watch as it caught fire. My friends dad came out and suggested suffocating the motor. So I jumped back in, took off the air cleaner (without getting burned as the motor was probably 300 degrees), grabbed a couple towels and held them on top of the carb until it finally died. My heart was pounding like crazy. I'm not sure how it didn't cause crazy damage but like I said, we ran that thing for the next 8 years and loved every minute. Lots of good times and crazy stories (like the time we hit a sandbar pulling a rider ... felt like hitting a brick wall). But that boat was a trooper!

I was 26 in 1999, bought a 1985 Ski Nautique 2001 with a friend of mine. We paid $9500. Put a tower on it & used a couple of fat sacs. Was a fun, first boat. Learned a lot about being a boat owner with that boat.
|
I believe I was 22, it was an Marlin Cobra (21' I/O) that I traded a Galaxie convertible for. A few years later once I figured I spent nearly all my time on the water riding I traded the Marlin plus some cash for my current Supra.
|
Age: 12
Year: Way too long ago... Boat: Feathercraft Bought a 12' aluminum boat with money I saved mowing lawns. Shortly after that I purchased a 10hp Johnson to go on the back because I got tired of rowing. Took my buddies out on Puget Sound, mostly fishing, but tried towing skiers behind it also. These days my parents would probably have been arrested for letting us do the stuff we did as kids by ourselves on the water. |
I grew up spending time on a bayliner but I bought my first boat at 25. It was a 2000 Mastercraft Prostar 205 for $7500 that was in very poor condition. I put a tower on it and enjoyed the crap out of it.

At 18 I bought a 1995 Super Sport Nautique.... I went 50/50 on it with a buddy. Put a ton of hours on but sold when I was like 23 when I moved to a bigger city and couldn't be on the water.
Then at 26 I bought a place on the water again and bought a 2004 LSV Wakesetter. I'm 29 now and the wakesetter is almost paid off... I have no intentions of upgrading. The best part is my wife went from being strongly against the purchase to when I suggested we sell it to tackle some home improvement projects she said "We aren't getting rid of it, ever." |
Bought a 2000 XStar when I was 23.
|
17 years old
1988 Malibu Skier (with a rotten a floor) I spent my entire senior year removing the floor and replacing the stringers, but when I started college in the fall, it was in tow. 2000+hours when I sold it |
In 2004 when I was 23, I bought a '98 Malibu Sportster with a buddy. After 4 years I moved out of state and bought him out. I kept it for another year before buying our current boat which is a '06 Supra 21V. Had a lot of great times on that Sportster!

^ If I didn't live in one of the most expensive places to live (Vancouver, BC and surrounding area) I'd possibly have a G as well. But when 500K barely buys you a house and the average is close to a million dollars now there isn't a lot left over.lol.
|
20 years old.
1973 Reinell I/O 2K Rebuilt the motor, ripped out all the interior except for the drivers seat. Lined the entire interior with shaggy carpet. Though a Air Boom on it. Rode on it for 3 years non stop in Salty Foster City Lagoon. Sold it for 3K. |
i was 24 in 2004, dad was taking my (his) boat away for the summer, Crestliner sportfish. So i ran out and picked up a 1982 MC Stars/Stripes... only intended on owning it 1 summer. ended up running it for 10 summers, only sold it because the wife made me get a newer tractor.
I should have kept it, be a nice boat to leave at the cabin. |
2003. I was 30. Malibu Wakesetter LSV. It costs 50K. Now that boat is nearly 3x the cost.
|
2013 or so for me, 31 years old. My folks moved out of state, and lost easy access to the boat.
Bought a 1994 Hydrodyne Grand Sport that we still run, and has been absolutely trouble-free for us but is finally needing an interior. Love that boat for it's ability to put out great wakes for everything we do - board, slalom, foot, and anything else that isn't inflatable. I'm not sure what my next one will be, but have a few friends with Sanger V210's that I ride often, and they seem to check most of my boxes. |
I was 23 when I bought my first boat in 2006. It was a 1976 Sidewinder with a mercury tower of power. I used it for probably only one season then I sold it to start my own business. Had so much fun on that boat, made a lot of good memories with it too. Now I've moved up to a 2001 Sky Supreme I just got this year. I had other boats and seadoos in between those as well.

1988 .. 12 years old my grandpa bought me a 13 foot Whaler with a 20hp Merc on it . We fished ,skied ,tubed ,and knee boarded off that thing . It was a blast we would be all over Clearlake from one end to the other . Clearlake would get real rough and my grandma would get super worried so my grandpa would tell her dont worry Jane thats a Whaler they're unsinkable .lol.
Fast forward 7 years to 1995 I had out grown the Whaler so Grandpa sold it for a I/O Invader the whole family could use . I was trying to be Mr Independent so I bought a cherry 1969 Glastron with one of those old school White 90hp Mercury's . It was a great boat for a 19 year old I would take it into the San Pablo Bay and all over the Delta fishining ,Skiing,Wakeboarding you name it we did it in that old boat. 3 years after that in 97 or 98 my all my cousins grew up and moved away and Grandpa sold me the Invader . It was in great shape but Invader built garbage boats I had nothing but trouble with that piece of crap . From the crap hollow stringers caving in to the crap OMC outdrive failing over and over again . I kept fixing it and kept thinking once the bugs are worked out it will be a fine boat but I just wasnt so I sold it . Which was fine because my roomate at the time had a boat so we were good . Right around 2002 I bought a Sanger jet boat it was a lot of fun I got it for almost free with a good running 455 olds and brand new interior . I used that sucker for a couple years and sold it for more then I paid for it . I did do some upgrades to the boat and trailer . 2005 I bought a 1985 Malibu Skier with brand new interior from a friend it was a fantastic little boat I put about 800 hours on it and then sold it back to him 3 years ago . I had that boat during my really wild and single days oh my freakin gawd if that boat could talk the storys it could tell . Once I got together with mama it was just too small for us with the kids so it was time to upgrade . After I sold it back my buddy let it fill with water (falling tree branch) so we gutted the floor out and redid everything 2 years ago . Thank god the stringers we're solid That old boat still looks awesome sitting in the water . 2015 Bought my Sanger V210 I friggin love this boat its got tons of storage compared to anything else I've ever had and handles soooo well . I think I will keep this one for a long time as its easy to pull easy to store and in pretty good shape still. I'm going to put a new ProFlight tower on it this winter and then next year have the interior replaced . The interior is starting to show some signs of wear but it will last at least 1 or possibly even 2 more seasons . Ive been kind of hesitating until the kids get a little older and arent so hard on stuff . |
22 ish, right after college...88 ski supreme. bought using a credit card check. $75 fee at 0% for 12 months:)

What awesome stories.
When I was 16 I bought a little bass boat from my momma. It was an 80's model 14 foot with a 40. Ran the tar out of that thing for a couple years. Almost sunk it on fort desoto beach near Tampa. When I was 20 I bought a bayliner 175 for cruising the lakes, wakeboarding, and learning how to properly maintain and operate a boat. Ran it for 4 years. Still have it in storage, about to get ride of it. Bought a 2000 tige 21v a month ago. Litterlly sitting in my driveway running it testing my new impeller and thermostat as I type. Love this boat. Excited to finally get it out and wakeboard! |

Year: 2002 Boat: Early 80's ski supreme (never did figure out the year) Cost R 30,000 (about $3k at the time) The boat that got me hooked on wake boarding (and boat ownership). I had the boat for just 1 year and sold it to go traveling. I dreamed about that boat for over 10 years and finally got a chance to get another boat 2 years ago. I originally wanted a late 80's Ski Nautique 2001, which was the boat I really wanted but couldn't quite afford when I had the Supreme. Never really thought I'd ever afford a SAN or Xstar at the time so the 2001 was my dream boat. but after doing some research decided it was worth stretching the budget just a bit to get a 1995 Sport Nautique, I paid 7K for the Sport I put over 8K into the boat over 18 months (New Trailer, Cover, Interior and lots of little bits). Ended up finding a deal on a 1996 Super Sport in the Spring of this year and jumped on it. Was able to sell the Sport for more then I picked up the Super Sport for and still have some change left over for updates(mostly upholstery work, rest of the boat is in great condition). I always liked the Nautiques and now I own a boat that's basically the equivalent of boat I used to see and think would be impossible to own. I am very happy with the boat and it has exceeded my expectations since getting it. It was such a deal I figured there was something wrong with it but it's been trouble free since I got it and I have just finished the first of what I hope will be many summers with it. |

At what age did you buy your first boat and what was it?
My first boat was when I was 18 and was a tri hull Ford motor that never ran. Got it for free and gave it away. 19 or 20 bought a 16' stern drive and learned how to wakeboard. Added a tower and stereo and sold it. Got into the rock crawling world for a while and sold it when I was 25 and bought a DD Aztec and got back into Wake boarding. Had fun for a year and then sold it to buy my current 12' F21 Tomcat that I love!!! Soccer has caused bad meniscus in my knees. So out with the wakeboarding and made the boat into a surf machine. Love surfing!!! Kid on the way so wife says we will be in the MB for a while and I'm glad I bought it when I did or I may have been stuck in the Aztec! [emoji23]

1995 / 22 yrs old: 1986 Stingray SV176SS for $4k, and an Insane brand wakeboard shortly thereafter. I built an extended pylon out of the plumbing department at Home Depot.
1999: picked up a 92 MC Prostar 190 ($12k, I think), sacked the crap out of it, and had a tower built for it that turned out to be ugly. Wake was bigger and better on the Stingray. 2001: bought a 96 Malibu VLX ($18k), loved that boat for 10 years, did all kinds of nice mods to it. Sold it in 2011 for almost exactly what I paid for it. 2014: bought a 00 Supra Launch ($2500) that had a couple holes in the hull from a lift bunk floating away, and had partially sunk. Runs great now, I still have less than $5k in it, and like it almost as much as I liked my VLX. |
