Combo Boat

Hey Guys, Looking for a new boat to upgrade from my 1987 ski nautique/southern fiberglass ski boat. Were looking for a 90s/ 00s boat for both skiing and wakeboarding. With this probably a D-drive, unless you guys know about a v drive that can make a small wake at 28+ MPH.

tampawake 08-27-2014 9:39 AM

why not just stay with CC and get a 2000ish 210. Unless your super hard core I think the wave flattens out enough but you need to decide that. That should be an easy boat to test out and see if your ok with it. Add weight and its an awesome wakeboat.

Thanks Tampa wake, Pretty determined on a d drive, ive skiied behind a few v drives and it is not fun, actually a little scary. also out price range is around 15k +- 5k

You could check out the Malibu Sunsetters from that timeframe. The Sunsetter LXI is a good mix if you are staying on a direct drive. If your focus is more on skiing, you can look for the Diamond hull.

You might find an old Malibu 21 xti. If you get a Sanger V210 and put on the Bennett wake tab you'd have a good ski boat and can still get a great wake for boarding. It's a very light hull but is a v-drive.

I'm pretty happy with my 1992 Supra Sunsport.

it's a good slalom wake (for the BEST you'd want a Supra Comp).

but it's a fantastic all around boat.

This is somewhere around 25 to 28mph. and I have a 60 pound bag of concrete in each corner of my hull.

Wakeboard wake at 20.5mph with a 350 sack under the rear seat.

21' with a playpen open bow and a trunk. it's got a nice wide beam and a TON of freeboard.

They can be had for $8k to $15k easily. Stick with a 1992 or newer as they are the all composite construction.

With that price range:

DD's
MC 195 or 205
CC Sport Nautique
Malibu Sunsetter
Supra Sunsport/Launch
Sanger DLX

V-drives
Sanger V210
CC 210
MC 205v

Any of those can be had in your price range depending on the age/condition

trayson, that wake is with the concrete in it? and also does anyone know about the ballast free wakes behind a 1998 malibu sunsetter lx?

zimme 08-27-2014 12:12 PM

Mastercraft 205 for sure.

TomH 08-27-2014 1:14 PM

Ski wakes on the 98 Sunsetter will be pretty good. Not as small as a Response or Sportster obviously, but the Sunsetter will do much better with some weight for boarding and has a bit more room inside.

nick_in_ssp 08-27-2014 4:37 PM

I have a '97 Malibu VLX and the wake is very good for slalom skiing at 15' off @ 32+ mph. But that is the only length. I started skiing thru the coarse behind this boat but quickly learned it is not good any other length.

chrislandy 08-27-2014 7:39 PM

As mentioned, I'd be looking at a Mastercraft Prostar 190 / 205 DD, depending on what is around. The 205 produces a very good wakeboard wake ('96 onwards was the same as the original x-star) and a satisfactory slalom wake - I think coming from a mid '80s CC (2001 by any chance?) you will be happy with it. If you are more slalom bias and not bothered about bow seats then focus on a 190. The slalom wake is literally just a few inches high at most slalom speeds, get to 32/34/36 and shortenings and you end up skiing over essentially nothing, yet add a little weight and you can get a pretty decent wake at boarding speeds.

90's sport nautique would also fit the bill.

Yep, that's with a 60 pound bag in each corner of the hull under the gas tank and a 100% full (37 gallon) tank of gas.

wakebordr11 08-28-2014 5:55 AM

I'd go with the sunsetter. Those 80s nautiques aren't known for their slalom wakes. Also a sport Nautique is great but the boat isn't going to be THAT much bigger than your 87. The sunsetter is a bigger boat in those years than the competition.

lovin_the_wake 08-29-2014 5:13 PM

x 2 on the Supra Sunsport, it throws a great wake!

WheelerWake 08-29-2014 7:19 PM

I had a 93 Sunsetter dd (open bow) and the wake really flattened out nicely at 28+. But, keep in mind it is true that a vdrive makes a larger wake because the engine is in the back, it's not as bad as it seems. The engine and fuel tank basically swap places between a vdrive and dd. So, depending on how much fuel is onboard, it's only about half as bad as it seems. The wake can then be flattened out by having passengers ride up front.

amsterdamn 08-31-2014 5:36 PM

Thanks everyone, and yeah i am probably more slalom based, we have a new slalom course up here. Also I am pretty sure about not getting a V drive. I recently wakeboarded and slalomed behind a 95 ish nautique. With the tower the wake was perfect, but skiing was not with the wake causing me to jump

novaman64 08-31-2014 10:49 PM

What length do you slalom at? Long line slalom a Sanger DXII has a bit of a harsh wake but shorter lines are a good wake. Good wakeboarding wake, and a great barefooting wake!

SESanger 09-01-2014 4:45 AM

I would second the Sanger DXII. I use it for everything... surf, wakeboard, kneeboard, trick ski, slalom ski, disc, barefoot and anything else we can do behind it. At 15' off, it's not bad, but shines into 22, 28, 32 off and shorter. I can surf unweighted and the wakeboard wake is good unweighted. Trick wake is great. My previous boats include a Malibu Sportster, and '06 Response Lxi, while my wife's family boats include mid-90's ProStar 190, ProStar 205V, Maristar 210, friends include Alan Jackson's old ProStar 190, and a host of other MC's. All great boats, but the DXII is the most versatile of all, hands down. It will never disappoint.

Thanks again, never seen a sanger boat around, but currently im looking at a 2000 tige 20i, anyone have one of them?

Problem with the Tige is the insanely low bow. That boat will produce a decent ski wake, but I would shoot for a malibu of the same era. A Malibu Response in those years is a better boat, in my opinion, and if you run a bag and the wedge, the wakeboard wake will be better than that Tige.

Our family owns a 21i from 1999, so my opinion is based on vinyl quality and stitching durability as well as wake quality. The 20i will be a better slalom wake, but not as good as a comp boat. Our boat has 853+ hours of relatively flawless operation.

A malibu, mastercraft or nautique will have a stronger resale market if you ever go to upgrade in the future. That is why I was suggesting the Malibu sunsetter, or an open bow Malibu Echelon would be sweet too.

illini88 09-03-2014 12:31 PM

I had a 2000 20i and really enjoyed it. I skied, boarded and footed behind it. The nose wa quite low but i learned how to minimize taking water over the bow. I had all the vinyl redone. The only areas in pooor shape were the rear sundeck and dog house

nitrousbird 09-03-2014 8:33 PM

'01 Sunsetter VLX or '02-'04 21 LSV. Both are on the SV23 diamond hull, which many consider one of the best V-drive slalom hulls out there, yet it will still make a great wakeboard wake and a surfable wake as well.
