computer virus

Two days ago, I picked up a gnarly computer virus. I kept getting prompted by User Account Control, asking me whether I wanted to allow a program (which was listed as from Microsoft) to make changes to my computer, and after rejecting it a bunch of times, I stupidly allowed it, thinking it was some kind of update, and about 10 minutes later everything went crazy - my CPU usage went to 100 percent, with all kinds of programs sucking up power, constantly switching from one program to the next, and my computer, even though no browsers were open, kept trying to connect to a host of malware sites. I have Avast antivirus software, and it was running at the time, so it blocked the connections to the malware sites, but I was infected nonetheless.

A full Avast scan didn't pick up the virus, but after doing some research on my phone (my computer was pretty much useless as soon as it connected to the internet), I downloaded malwarebytes antimalware software, and it picked up the virus and cleaned it. Then, after doing some more research, I followed up with rogue killer, adwcleaner, and junkware removal tool, which also picked up and cleaned some stuff, and the problem was resolved.

Just thought I'd share this info. One of my friends was infected with the same virus on the same day (I believe but am not sure that it was a conhost virus), so I thought some forum members might be having problems with it as well. I'm not a computer expert by any stretch (as evidenced by my downloading the virus in the first place!) but the above steps seem to have worked for me.

On a positive note, after all the cleaning, my computer is about twice as fast as it was prior to the virus . . . .
