Could a Malibu MXZ 20 (with surf gate) be a good wake surfing boat ?

Definitely, It has the same beam as the 22 and the 24. I've wakeboarder behind one and was very impressed.

Sit in the boat. The main cabin of the MXZ is smaller than the VTX to allow or the bow room. It gets cramped in thy boat real fast
