Screws for swim platform bracket ripped through transom 05 21v

1 Attachment(s)
So over the weekend, I had the top bolts rip out of the transom of the boat as shown in the attached picture. Has anyone had this happen before? I tried looking at the backside but it seems to be under the floor so I am afraid the floor has to be cut out in the back? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I don't believe they are thru bolted, as I assume a Supra would be like our old Moomba

They are not through bolted I figured that out but was told in order to fix it correctly it would need to be done on the inside and the outside otherwise it would be too weak.

you might be able to just fill the holes with some fiberglass (or maybe epoxy) and redrill the screws in once it is all set up....I would try that first

Measure up from the plug on the outside to the screw center. Then transfer to the inside of the boat, to find the location. I would thru bolt with a backer plate if you think it will happen again. What caused it.

How do they not bolt those in? Scary.

luke22885 07-21-2014 2:36 PM

I did measure from the outside then do same inside because I also thought through bolting it with a plate was a good idea. The problem is the measurements are under the floor.

That sucks. That must be why they are screwed in.

I cut the floors out of the back of my boat but, just to gain ballast capacity. It all depends on the structural integrity of the hull and how it's all put together. You could just cut some access panels in if you need to.

I'd contact the manufacturer! Shouldnt this fall under some hull warranty issue?

luke22885 07-21-2014 6:15 PM

Was thinking about calling them tomorrow to see what their thoughts are

Yeah, I would have expected it to be through bolted. Look at the backing plate for the swim platform bracket that's on my 1992 Supra Sunsport. It is also the plate that has the lift points on the rear of the hull.

Damn. Sucks it wasn't through bolted and actually can't believe they don't through bolt. I would
call the mfg to talk to them about the repair. If you have to cut until the floor look into 6 or 8" access ports to do the work.

luke22885 07-22-2014 10:44 AM

Yea they were like 3" lag bolts and the ones on top that pulled out were actually snapped. When we pulled the bottom ones the tips were like those self drilling tips. Was actually kind of hoping someone on here said oh yea that happened to me it's an easy fix haha going to call supra today about it

patrick232 07-22-2014 11:24 AM

Did you try the supra or moomba forum?

Motosno963 07-22-2014 2:51 PM

You sure?.. my 04 outback I think has the through hull bolts for the platform

Bumpass1 07-22-2014 6:01 PM

Yep same thing happened to mine. I cut 4" holes in the bottom of the lockers in order to gain access to the area and plated and thru hull bolted them. Sealed everything up, and she's rock solid now.

Only if you are the original owner. I tried that route with mine and I was denied by Supra since I was not the original owner when it happened.

luke22885 07-23-2014 8:59 AM

I am going to call anyways, would think there wouldnt be a difference if it was original owner or not but guess I will find out. Its weird that a 1992 is through bolted but then they stopped. A buddy has a 07 moomba lsv and that is through bolted because they started getting spider cracks and were sent some big washers or backing plate of some sort to stop the issue.

Bumpass1 07-23-2014 3:32 PM

Its not a matter if they will help you with information or not. Supra tech support has always been real good with me, the problem is that the lifetime hull warranty is for the original owner only. I was told by them that there was a form to transfer the warranty one time but it had to be done within a certain time after the boat was built.

99Bison 07-23-2014 3:45 PM

My 01 is through bolted on top bolts and lagged on the bottom.

meathead65 07-23-2014 5:34 PM

I'll bet the "lifetime hull warranty " applies to structural issues only, and bolt on brackets typically have nothing to do with structure. Good bunch of guys at SC, though, can't hurt to ask.
