Anybody tow with an Audi Q7

Thinking about grabbing an Audi Q7 3.0T for the wife. Any feedback on towing. No, I will not be considering the diesel...

I know in a VW they don't recommend towing with that engine or any of the little turbo gas motors. Nothing above I think 1500 lbs.

mikeski 12-31-2012 1:12 PM

Interesting, I will check with the dealer.

Searching through the archives it also looks like the brakes may have had some warping issues.

My primary tow vehicle will remain my Supercharged Avalanche, but we do want to have the option to tow when we have 6 passengers like we do with the current Tahoe the Q7 would replace. The other option we are considering is the new Explorer Sport ecoboost with the 3.5L V6 Eccoboost similar to what is used in the F150's. Unfortunately my wife doesn't like the black interior.

According to their website the tow rating is 6600# with the tow package.

With a 3.0 litre engine? I'll have to check on that. My wife's VW Van with a 4.0 litre V-6 rated at almost 300 hp has a tow capacity of 3800 lbs.

2013 Audi Q7
PROPULSION
Fuel Type: Gas
Engine Type: 3.0L V6
Power: 280 hp @ 4920 rpm
Torque: 295 lb-ft @ 2250 rpm
Transmission: 8-Speed Automatic
Highway Fuel Economy: 22 mpg
City Fuel Economy: 16 mpg
Forced Induction: Supercharger
Direct Injection: Yes

TRAILERING & HAULING
Trailer Weight: 5500 lbs
Payload: TBD
Tongue Weight: 550 lbs

I stand corrected. 5500lbs. Seems ambitious to me for a 3.0 Turbo/Supercharged motor.

Thats off Audi's website for a 2013, not sure where Tim got 6600. Maybe thats the diesel.

On the website it says WITH the tow package they are (all) rated at 6600.

The Q7's are a big SUV...and minivans are a whole different animal...I often wish my wifes Odyssey could handle the boat...LOL

Why wouldn't you consider the TDI...? In my opinion, that's the only reason to consider the Q7.

mikeski 12-31-2012 5:54 PM

The Q7 is out. She said it feels too much like a station wagon and she doesn't feel as safe as she does in the Tahoe. Probably a good thing, I was not quite ready to drop $60k on a new vehicle when I can get everything I need in the Explorer Sport for $42k.

with the TDI Q7 how does it tow? DOes anyone here have the TDI?

Kaikane 01-17-2013 5:00 PM

We're on our 2nd Q7 TDI...in my opinion, perhaps the best all around SUV in its class. Have towed my 230 from the Bay Area to lakes New Melones, Don Pedro, and Lake Tahoe. Has far superior power vs. my Suburban which we typically tow with due to hauling 7 passengers plus gear. The Q7 maxes out at 5 plus gear (even though you can squeeze 7 plus gear). Thing is built like a tank but handles like a sports car if you get the S-line package and larger wheels. I wish Chevy would come out with a TDI style suburban...would be my ideal SUV.

pickle311 01-18-2013 2:15 PM

I was looking at the Q7 as well as the Touareg TDI. The towing capacity is more so based on the chassis and how much weight it can safely keep under control.
The more I read on them, the more issues I found and things I didn't like. I wasn't fond of the handling either, I wanted something that felt more connected to the road. I ended up with the BMW X5 diesel. I love the handling, towing capacity is 6000lbs though I haven't towed with it yet. I just got it 2 weeks ago.
Very happy with the vehicle. It's much more fun to drive than my Tundra was, far better gas mileage, and the thing is loaded with features I've never had before.

I pull my Supreme V220 with a 4.2L Q7. I haven't had a single problem yet.

Tow with a V12 TDi... Works out quite nice.

I don't understand the safety issue from your wife. It is probably the safest SUV on the market.

rallyart 01-19-2013 8:42 PM

Mikeski, it's the six passengers that limits you. There are lots of five passenger smaller SUV's that handle towing well but not much that can take six people. You could look at Volvo's .

Ahhhh the Q7. Great looking ride, but In my opinion all out expensive unit to roll in. I have been in the car bizz for the last 5 yrs. I have a 08 Q7 on my lot right now and I am scared to death of it. 50,000 miles and every repair we did to it since I took it in to resell it has been nuts. So expensive. In fact today a client made an offer to buy it, the only condition was the I had to toss in a comprehensive warranty. Cost for a 4/48,000mi was 8750. I almost fell over. I had to tell the sales rep to advise his client to go lease a new 13 Q7. So after all that explanation my best advice is to lease one at the end of the day cars are a horrible investment.

You wanna buy mine hahahaha think I am gunna wholesale it.
