Poor boats on the Guadalupe River in TX.

Wednesday morning in South Central Texas area (between Austin and San Antonio) received 12"+ inches of rain in a matter of approx 4hrs. The Guadalupe River which is known for great fun for toobing, canoeing, kayaking, and has some small lakes created by dams (great for wakeboarding). This youtube video shows about a dozen or so boats (including wakeboats) and PWC's going over the dam at Lake Dunlap on the river. The water flow had risen from a nice 535 cubic feet per second to over 55,000 cubic feet per second in approx 4hrs. However, the dramatic rise ocurred in just 1hr where the flow went from 4000cfs to 52,000cfs in less than 2hrs. This is flash flooding at it's scariest. It also ocurred between 7am-10am which is when most of these boat owners would be at work and/or did not have the time to get their boats off their lifts/docks or even away from their houses which many were flooded. All these boats met their doom by going over the dam.

you_da_man 06-11-2010 10:57 AM

My friend was at a wakeboard camp at the same spot on the videos and she said they saw wakeboards everywhere. She even said some boats were in and amongst the trees.

ottog1979 06-11-2010 10:58 AM

OMG! I wonder what it looked like on the other side of the dam?

jonblarc7 06-11-2010 11:32 AM

How big is the damn, I feel so sorry for those people.

bruizza 06-11-2010 11:53 AM

I am also curious as to how high that damn is.

jmalibu 06-11-2010 12:23 PM

That makes me want to throw-up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a shame

trace 06-11-2010 12:31 PM

I just got an email with about 50 pics of the damage on Lake McQueeney, tons of WB boats. I don't have time to upload the pics right now, but if someone wants to PM me I'll forward it to them...

you_da_man 06-11-2010 1:36 PM

Bruizza,

Here's your answer: "Lake Dunlap Dam, also known as Tp-1 Dam is of earthen construction. The foundation is unlisted or unknown. Its height is 41 feet with a length of 1626 feet. Its capacity is 5900 acre feet. Normal storage is 5900 acre feet. It drains an area of 242 square miles."

craig_xti_88 06-11-2010 1:38 PM

Trace- Can you send me the pics? craigc@asbonline.com

chris4x4gill2 06-12-2010 9:06 AM

That is an amazing amount of destructioN! All of that happened due to rain?

you_da_man 06-12-2010 9:08 AM

R.I.P. Obviously this flashflood was not predicted or else most of these boats would have been off the lake. This is the Guadalupe River so these home owners know the risk and the frequency that this river can do this. One resident said it's been 16yrs since the last flood of this magnitude. However, if any of you are familiar with Bubba's bar near the River Rd bridge in Gruene knows that there's a very, very large tree that has been there forever and has wooden plaques nailed to it at various heights indicating the date of the high water mark

you_da_man 06-12-2010 9:09 AM

Chris, the more amazing thing is that this amount of rain fell in less than 4 hours.

2006maliblue 06-12-2010 9:17 AM

Holy S#@$

Thats insane! I hope everybody had insurance.

From the vegation on the roof of some of the docks it looks like the water got real high!

scottnaz 06-12-2010 9:22 AM

Absolutely heart breaking destruction!

chris4x4gill2 06-12-2010 9:31 AM

Vegetation on the roofs? What about the boats on the roofs?!

I'm just finding it hard to believe even with seeign the pictures! I just got home from being out of town for a little over a week and it makes me want ot geot to the lake to check on my boat even though it woudl have to raise the lake 30+ feet above the damn to do damage.

baitkiller 06-12-2010 12:38 PM

That is really hard to see. It reminds me that hurricane season this year should be fairly busy. We haven't gotten pounded since 2005 and are probably due. I put in an email in to a long time friend that works CAT claims adjusting and specializes in marine. We worked Andrew, Charlie, Wilma and Ike together. Looks like he is headed to Texas for this one too. Don't think of me as a vulture but I asked him to keep an eye out for a good late model V drive salvage opportunity. With any luck Ill need to borrow a trailer soon. Better a rider with two groms than a spec dealer.

talltigeguy 06-12-2010 1:21 PM

I hope no one was hurt. Looks like you could easily have drowned out there trying to save your boat.

Amazing how the lawn at some of those homes still looks pristine, even though the water must have been half way up to the houses.

tro 06-12-2010 2:08 PM

that is insane.

ajholt7 06-12-2010 2:25 PM

I hope insurance covers all those boats. I would be sick.

bigshow 06-12-2010 6:02 PM

Wow

zacharoo 06-12-2010 6:07 PM

Damn.....

dave23 06-12-2010 6:32 PM

Damn. This is reason #1 why I would never own property on a river. There is always the chance of some major flooding, even if it hasn't flooded "in a long time". I assume this is from the same storm that killed quite a few people in Arkansas?

bill_airjunky 06-12-2010 7:56 PM

Holy crap.

dohboy 06-12-2010 8:43 PM

Wow if I were an insurance adjuster I'd be crying right now. That is horrible. Mother nature is a real b#%ch sometimes. I do predict a lot of new boats on that river soon! Hopefully they are all insured.

tgoin 06-12-2010 8:45 PM

the video was bad enough, these pictures just make me sick to my stomach. It's just stuff, but wow!

you_da_man 06-13-2010 1:44 AM

David, this storm was actually not that big...meaning it wasn't some kind of storm front. It was just the right conditions and a moderate sized system stalled over the area dumping rain. The Central Texas area that day saw several areas with moderate sized storms stalling in one spot. I just want to know is...how in the hell does the sky hold that much water?

slipknot 06-13-2010 6:34 PM

this is terrible, I just got sick to my stomach

srock 06-14-2010 7:41 AM

I'm surprised there was no effort to keep boats from going over the dam. I guess with the amount of debris in the water you would not want to get caught up in the mess.

cwb4me 06-14-2010 7:47 AM

all the texas boat dealers have got to love this boat salesout the wazu!

Forgot to post these up when I got them in an email the other day

The chain of lakes in the Hill Country has now been closed to any water traffic, motorized or non-motorized, until Aug. 1st.

you_da_man 06-14-2010 7:47 PM

Which lakes in Texas are closed? The only chain of lakes I know of are of course Lake Austin, Lake Travis, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls.

bac 06-14-2010 7:54 PM

Sorry AJ, poor choice of words on my part,

McQueeney, Dunlap, Placid, Nolte, Gonzales and Wood are all closed until Aug

fuller313 06-14-2010 11:08 PM

My parents live on lake McQueeney and are neighbors to the guy whose pontoon boat is flipped upside down on top of the boat house. The craziest thing about it is it was only sprinkling in New Braunfels when the flood happened. I was at my house in San Antonio when my mother called me to tell me it was flooding there. At first I thought she was just joking as it wasn't even raining at my house. She said the boat is gone and it flooded all the way to the walkout of the house and almost made it to the main floor. The whole walk out was covered in 6-7 inches in mud. Those pictures are just the damage to the boats. Many houses got flooded as well. Unfortunately many people do not have insurance for their boat or flood insurance for their house.(both neighbors don't) Luckily my parents have both but will still take a hit as the riding lawn mower, soda machine and other items won't be covered by insurance. Many of the people that live on my parents street said they have never seen the water come up as fast as it did. Some have lived there long enough to have seen the other really bad flood in 98. My thoughts and prayers go to all who have lost.

you_da_man 06-15-2010 6:21 AM

How do people NOT have insurance on their boats? I know I am a noob to this and only had my first wakeboat since Sept 09 but isn't insurance required on boats like cars/trucks?

Yea, it's crazy. If you have a bank loan on a boat or house, they will require you insure it. My home owners insurance covers everything, the house, the sidewalk, the lawn mower, the pictures on the wall, furniture, TV, roof, your clothes, etc.
And most people who live on a lake or river would make a point to make sure their insurance covers things like floods, especially when they have had floods in the area so recently. In fact, my own insurance REQUIRED me to have flood insurance because we were only like 400' from the lake, inside the county mandated "flood plane". But if you don't live right near a body of water, it's your own choice.
I guess it's not like that everywhere. Nice they don't have to spend the money. Not so nice now though. It's a shame to see how widespread the damage is.

pickle311 06-21-2010 9:24 AM

Wow, I didn't realize it was that bad. All of the times I wished I lived on the water, this makes me glad I don't right now.

0klahoma_Breakdown 06-21-2010 10:17 AM

Sucks that this happened but it sure would be cool to see pics or video of the boats after they went over the spillway.
