V-drive under $20k?

Looking to upgrade from my '86 2001 and looking to spend under $20k. I've been looking at some Super Sports, a friend has suggested an older x star. Any thoughts as far as better wake, better for surfing, etc?

williamburell 05-06-2013 5:11 PM

The 205v/early stars are a great wake and great all around boats. Can't speak for the surf wake but the wakeboard wake is awesome. Watch the vinyl on that early 00' years vintage. The original vinyl was crap and you'll get 2-3k deep on new vinyl. Just fyi your gonna be hard to find one sub 20 though. Old stars are like gold

jhartt3 05-06-2013 5:17 PM

sanger's arent a bad choice in that price range... earlier this year a guy by me got a 2006 supra 20v for 16500

boardman74 05-06-2013 5:21 PM

Tough to find nice V-drive for under 20K, like William said. Kind of like Big Foot, King Kong and El Chupacabra. They are out there but the sightings are rare!!!

You find the well used/ beat up ones for sub 20K and like said above you can turn those into a money pit quick. Your going to have to hit the early models..thats mid to late 90's for most manufacturers.

boardman74 05-06-2013 5:23 PM

But boarder, as we all know that was the "Big Foot" sightings of deals. That was beyond a steal...once in a lifetime deal. Thats surely not the norm!

Thoughts?

wakebordr11 05-06-2013 6:52 PM

I wouldn't be in that boat for 18.5. It needs an interior... 17-17.5 though...

jhartt3 05-06-2013 7:01 PM

Hey ima keep dreaming someone else on that overpriced lake has a 2003-2006 SANTE they have to get rid of b/c they want a pontoon ... and put it up for 14k.

humboldt9 05-06-2013 7:50 PM

Looks like your in FL if so probably can't help unless you are willing to ship. There are usually some really nice Sanger V210's that pop up on craigslist and boattader out here on the West coast. Best bang for the buck if your looking for a quality used v-drive in that price range. Oh and disclaimer... I own one.

Indeed it was. That's my boat Border42 is talking about. While it was cheap, there's still issues with it. It was a neglected boat cosmetically, but the drivetrain is awesome and very strong (because they hired a mechanic to do everything). The boat needs new vinyl, needs a ballast drain pump, needs a deep carpet clean, full detail including polish, wax, buff, etc. The stereo was old and speaker foam was cracked, so that's getting redone. My point is that if you want a boat that you can turn the key on and be ready to go, sub 20k is going to be tough without putting some man hours into it. I'm fine with doing some repairs on mine, but others might not be the same way. Still a hell of a deal though.

As for sub 20k boats, the 205v will probably be your best bet. The 205v is the same hull as the x-star, so even if you find one of those without the tower/ballast system you can always add those on later. You can definitely get into an older MC Maristar which is a V-drive. Those can be had for mid teens if you find the right boat.

Haha nah, he's a good guy. I plan to use the boat for a wake the world event he's organizing, and I told him before he's welcome to take a pull anytime.

williamburell 05-07-2013 7:37 AM

I know but have to pick alil bit

dvsone79 05-07-2013 7:47 AM

I own a '99 205v (same hull as Xstar) and it has a killer boarding wake. Surf wake is ok, it's high enough and plenty of push, but the pocket isn't very long. For around $20k, you will not find a better wake for boarding. You may have to travel to get one, but IMO it would be worth it.

Dang nick i'll take that boat for 16k every day. dont find many that pop up around here like that.

wakebordr11 05-07-2013 9:01 AM

That boat is great and a great deal at his original asking price of 17.5... He had it for sale for a decent amnt of time if memory serves me well.

Quote:

We put it up for 20k in the spring, figured if someone would pay 20 it was theirs and we would deal with no boat for a summer....

Of course no one wanted to pay 20k for it so fall came around and we dropped the price accordingly... Had a guy coming to pay $17,000 but my brother didn't want to be boat-less so he bought it off me for $16,000.... I knocked another $1,000 off for him since I can still use it when I go back "home".

We paid 17k for it like 6 years before (bone stock) but it only had 300 hours.

If you can find a supersport, go for it, we LOVED everything about the boat (for the price). Just sort of narrow (makes it sensitive to weight distribution) ... other than that, awesome boat.

jhartt3 05-07-2013 10:56 AM

sidekicknicholas 05-07-2013 11:33 AM

markj 05-07-2013 11:59 AM

That's a smokin price on that Super Sport with those hours and how it's equiped.

zimme 05-17-2013 8:26 AM

17,500 for a 00 x-star. Needs some interior, but still a hell of a deal.

http://www.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/...ad.php?t=52923

wakebordr11 05-17-2013 9:34 AM

Hell of a deal? Boat needs 1500-2500 to have the interior redone and who knows what else? It looks like it was treated poorly. You can grab 2000 X's for 20-23... all day

Edit: not as many on OI as I remember, but fall/winter there were a few...

boardman74 05-17-2013 9:44 AM

I agree not a good deal for what looks like a neglected boat. I'd say a solid 2500 in upholstery and like delta said who knows what else. Thing looks rough and not just the seats. Look up into the bow.

wakebordr11 05-17-2013 9:50 AM

I am also realizing - though I do not agree, that people are attempting to market their boats at a 5-8000 premium due to summer being here. I strongly believe that the winter market is where the prices should be at - 19-22 for a decent 2000 xstar or super air etc... Onlyinboards looks heavily inflated right now and I don't agree...

Of course - at this stage in the game, I am a tire kicker but I feel I have a strong grasp of what is worth what

zimme 05-17-2013 10:06 AM

Sure it needs interior and a good cleaning... but if you want to get into a v-drive cheap, that's the way to do it. Sometimes people don't mind the elbow grease and a little work when you can get into something cheaper and save a little money. I know I don't mind...

boardjnky4 05-17-2013 10:20 AM

With a brand new interior, a good cleaning and assuming the mechanicals are good, then I would say that's a $25k boat in this market. IMO, a fair deal. Not the steal of the century, but it's fair.

fouroheight68 05-17-2013 11:27 AM

I looked for boats for the past 2 years. I honestly see no difference in Summer and Winter pricing. People think (as I did) that you gotta "snag a deal in the offseason". Well, everyone who is looking for a wakeboat is thinking that, and everyone who is selling one is waiting for summer. So, you end up with a ton of buyers (demand) and a shortage of sellers (supply). You do the math. I've seen quote a few deals pop up lately (more than winter). Example - Cherry 2003 v210 in San Jose for 19,500.

You got a repo deal from a friend through the bank... good luck doing that anywhere else

gene3x 05-17-2013 3:09 PM

Just picked up a 2001 Launch SSV for $20,500 last month. It needed some work but engines runs well with 700 hours on it.
Was having second thoughts but now comfortable with my purchase after reading a little.

Dmac420sj 05-17-2013 7:14 PM

Bank repos don't count as good deals. Lol

wakebordr11 05-17-2013 7:36 PM

Meant to say short sale, which he coordinated with his friend.

petrie141 05-17-2013 7:38 PM

I'm in the works of getting a '99 Malibu sunsetter VLX right now. 450ish hours, tower, and racks (no built in ballast). The interior has a few nicks/scratches here and there, but that's nothing that my dogs wouldn't end up doing... The price was $19,995. The steering cable was messed up, but they're fixing that for me and installing perfect pass (which I'm paying for separate). V-Drives under 20k do exist, but like someone said earlier, they're hard to find. Usually someone knew someone who heard from someone else that so-and-so got a good deal on one... blah blah... my deal is happening now, right at the start of the season. If you keep looking hard, you just might find one!

trayson 05-23-2013 2:11 PM

On the Portland OR craigslist, there's been a late 90's Maxum V-Drive that has a tower, perfect pass, hard wired ballast system and somewhere in that 500 hour range that's had a $14,500 asking price for months...

I even had some friends that went to look at it. It didn't have the original tower (so had a few extra mounting holes?) and it only had a single axle trailer. But for the money, it seemed pretty nice. I didn't even know Maxum made a tournament style v-drive.

It's listing has expired, so I don't have a link for ya'all.

boardman74 05-23-2013 5:25 PM

Maxum made that boat for just 2 or 3 years. I forget what they called it but it was the same as the Bayliner(both US Marine). The Bayliners were called Ski Challenger(DD) and Wake Challenger(V Drive). There was a 20 and a 22. Direct drive was a 21. Made in 97 and 98 for sure. Possible 96 also, but for sure 98 was the last year of production. I owned the 97 Ski Challenger. Bought it brand new and had nothing but problems. Took a year to sort out all the issues and a winter back at the factory. It put out a good wake and I have heard the V drives to also. But they are super cheaply made. Plenty of wood in the boat too. I wouldn't own another one unless it was cheap.

Im in a CC super sport now which is the same as the super air hull, and im wanting to get in something with less of a rampy transition on the wakeboard wake and something that has more space like the elite V, and something that surfs better. Do you have any wake pics handy?

markj 05-23-2013 11:19 PM

Nate, the SS hull is anything but rampy. It's a massive wall that boots you. As far as surfing it goes, you probably just need to figure out how to weight it properly plus perfect pass is a must for surfing with that hull.

markj 05-23-2013 11:20 PM

Meant to say SS wake.

When i say rampy i was comparing it to a quarter pipe ramp haha, but yea it is like a wall for sure, and i have the surf wake as dialed as it can be but i am regular footed so its a lil harder to get that side wake was good bc the prop rotation. I am just curious about the centurion elite v, I am happy with my CC SS but the grass is always greener right..

tonyv420 05-24-2013 1:54 PM

I think the Elite V has the same hull as a Avalanche, but I could be wrong. My Avy puts out a excellent surf wave and a ok wakeboard wake (2004)

The Elite V C4 has a smaller version of the Avalanche hull. The non-c4 Elite V is a different, older hull design, which is less desirable, but still throws a good wake/wave once dialed in.
