Moved the hull/trailer out today and got the top/drivetrain in the shop. Kinda feels like starting over again!

Making more progress. The paint work is done! Hardware is installed, and teak is being re-finished. I made a custom teak dash to replace the factory vinyl one.
I'm going to work on the motor/tranny next and then finally put the top cap back on and drop the motor back in. It has been a long winter, it's almost April and all the lakes are frozen solid. Man it's coming along nicely, glad to see this one has died out like so many in the past. Speaking of the motor, what all are you planning on doing to it? Leave it all stock or do some power adders? Have you thought about converting it over to a TBI system?

The "wheel house" is done. I was able to resurrect most of the teak trim but I had to buy a few board feet of teak for the gauge/switch panels. $29.99 per bf!!
Top is ready to go back on! Joann fabric had a 50% off sale on foam so I took advantage. $260 for the two bundles! Snowed another 8" yesterday :( As for the motor, it has an edelbrock intake and a Holley carb. I have checked compression, replaced plugs, changed oil and filter and will be replacing most of the hoses. TBI is definitely running through my mind for next winter as I dislike any carb that isn't attached to a bike/quad. I ran the motor with a fake-a-lake in the fall and it seemed to run well. No tower here. Just an extended pylon for wakeboarding. Don't need one for surfing and I'm not a fan of the looks of a tower on an old boat.

The paint is Interlux Brightside. No clear coat just wet sand buff and wax.

Engine cover LOL. I thought you were building a step that helped you get in and out of the boat. I was going to say You are the Man. Especially when you are doing a project as big as this you must have been in and out of the boat a million times. A step like this is Exactley what you need. Then when I discovered It was your engine cover I was like WTH how can a "Square shaped box" like this be a engine cover. Then I thought back to what boats of the older vintage had for a engine cover and Yes I guess your cover is period correct. The old Stars and Stripes and 2001 Nautiques had pretty much a box for a motor cover. "BUT" if it was up to me I would try to add some shape (curves) to the motor box cover I think it might look a but more factory. Just my 2c but great project thanks for sharing. It's great to see projects like this and the Hydrodine rebuild

Actually the engine cover from this boat was a curvy fiberglass unit. I wanted to add some seating.
If time ( it's May) we're not an issue I would probably try to make it more modern looking but I think it will look ok as is. |
It's your boat, make your engine cover whatever size/shape/color you want. Great Job! and it's been fun following along. I hope you can get it done soon, so you can get on the water and have some fun!

Any update here? I love seeing the progress! I especially like that you painted yours. I went with a wrap and it's not as durable as I'd hoped. I'm going to have to address the exterior cosmetics of my boat again in 3-5 years I bet.

Not sure what happened to my Tapatalk account so I have kept you guys out of the loop. I'm getting closer by the day, should be dunking her in the lake this weekend to see if it floats! I got some ridiculous quotes for the upholstery so I am doing it myself. I will post more pics when I get my Tapatalk to work again.

Way to go! Looks like you're making goo progress. It's hard to tell in the pictures, but I strongly recomend painting or epoxy coating the wood before you cover it. Your hard work will last 5 times longer if keep the water out of the wood. Especially the solid 2x2 pine/fir The ply will last a while but that 2x2 cleat won't. Looking great tho, and keep the pics coming. Can't wait to see it on the water. Nice job!

Dropped her in the lake today! Had the motor, floor, and transom exposed to check for leaks and other issues. A few things to address but nothing big.

The backwards steering had me laughing.
I see you have your ballast switches labeled left and right, but I only see one sack in the back where the locker is. Were you planning to do a 750 that went between the ski locker area and the rear seat on each side and it didn't work out, or is there still a second bag in the works? |

The rear has two bags. Twin 750's. The other two 400's are up front. There is a splitter valve for each side on the passenger seat base. I'll try to get you a better pic of the rear "sack locker" later.

Ok, with that pic I see it. I didn't notice the other one tucked away in there until I saw that pic. So you're running 4 bags with 2 pumps and have a switch for the front, a switch for the rear, and just flip the valve depending on what side you're doing?
It looks like you used a sheet of HDPE over the gas tank to support the weight of the bags off the gas tank. Did you have to remove or cut anything else besides the locker insert to do your setup there? How thick HDPE did you use? Also do you have any pics of the rear with the hatch covered? Do you think you have any room for a shallow ski locker insert to be put in there with the bags as well? |
Switch for right, switch for left, valves for front/rear. My gas tank was relocated forward under the seat. I understand the functionality of the rear bench for the ballast and gas tank and the walk through, but it doesn't look like a very comfortable place to sit with the short back rests and the padding looks really thin. Is it just deceiving in the pictures, or is it the less desirable place to sit on the boat, aka the "guest seat"?

Seating was definitely sacrificed for functional ballast and storage. The padding is thicker than it looks I guess (2" foam). The rear bench is comfy with your elbows on the top deck, passenger seat sucks because of the windshield on the back of your head, drivers bench is sweet and the bow just rocks! Wife wishes she had a bucket seat:(

So a couple things I'm curious about:
1. It looks like there are a few inches of space between the top of the fuel tank and the bottom of the seats. Wondering why you didn't make the seats a bit lower to get a bit more lumbar support/seat in there. I understand the center step section, I'm assuming that your fuel pump/sending unit is probably under that. But it seem like you could've gained some slightly more comfortable seating in the rear by lowering the seats a bit. 2. Have you actually surfed it yet? I'd love to see the wake pics if you have any yet. I know there's a few guys running these boats and are always having to play with the weight constantly to get a decent wake. Just curious how well the built-in ballast is working out and if you're able to get a decent/good wake out of it? |
1. I matched the seat height from the front (16"). The space under the cushions is perfect for the tube and all my ropes!
2. I have surfed a couple times but I'm a noob (goofy) and can't drop the rope yet. I have a friend who can surf and he will help me dial in the wave soon. The boat also is able to ride with the nose down more and is a lot easier to steer, rpms are a bit lower and it gets up to surf speed quicker. For your setup, I would actually recommend filling the starboard locker all the way, not filling the port bag or the bow sacks and throwing at least 400, if not 750 on the surf side by the doghouse. Make sure you adjust your wakeplate too, that was a big factor in this working. We also have made a custom surf platform as the stock platform caught the wake too much, created spray, made the wave real dirty and robbed push. Doing this was a HUGE improvement . What transmission do you have in it? Is it the PCM-40a or the PCM-40i? The prop rotation with the 1:1 40a favors the regular side. I'm not sure if the 1.23:1 40i has a different prop rotation with the gear reduction, but I imagine it might. I'm not saying a transmission swap would be feasible labor or money wise, but if you are intent on keeping this boat forever and surf goofy, it might be worth looking into if it does indeed change prop rotation to favor the goofy side. Otherwise how it is, with the 40a, the regular side will always make a much nicer wave than the goofy side would. |
Great re-build/restoration. What I like about it is that its updated and new but doesn't look like an old boat trying to look like a newer one. Good idea to stick with the pole and not put a tower on it. This and the Hydrodyne threads have been the best to follow the last few months. Congrats.

Well here is the situation.... The property next to my shop just went up for sale and I need to buy it. Like I told my wife, they make new boats every day and they aren't making any more land next door. I'm asking $14,900. I have about that invested without labor costs and I think it's a fair price for what it is. Pass the word and let me know if you are interested.
Long story short ...... I really wanted a wakesurf boat. I then I realized that having a mortgage on a boat was out of the question. Modern surf boats go from $40k to over $100k!! Research ensued and I decided that building myself a wake surfing boat was a plausible option. This Supra Sunsport is a 19.5' deep v inboard ski boat that shares the hull design of the modern wakeboard boats. This hull shape is also very good for wake surfing due to the high freeboard (doesn't sit low in the water). This allows the use of heavy ballast systems without the fear of swamping over the bow or stern. Over the last year I have spent countless hours and a lot of money restoring and modifying this boat. I built it to surf and wakeboard and to spend time with my family and teach my young boys how to enjoy watersports as much as I do. Every aspect of this build was thought out and planned extensively. My intention was to keep the boat for about 10 years then upgrade. This summer I have enjoyed the boat and logged about 30hrs on it. Recently a financial issue has come up and now I need the money more than the boat so a decision was made.
